So why aren't more people saying this when it comes to the Redskins and their Pierre Garcon signing?
I did, yesterday. I said I'd be curious to see how the contract breaks down before going too crazy about the supposed guaranteed money.

That having been said, the Redskins are notorious for being the opposite of the "smart teams" I mentioned. i.e. under Synder they have a history of overpaying the shit out of the players they sign and giving them huge guaranteed money up front. Which is why you're seeing the reactions you do when it comes to them signing a guy like Garcon for what appears to be #1 WR money.

So is there anything guaranteed at all? Signing bonus maybe?
I'm sure there is, yes. Just depends on how much via signing bonus, workout bonuses etc. and anything else built into the first year or two of the contract. Without a breakdown, it's hard to say.

I think you're a secret Lions fan. You know us too well.

WedgeX--I read two different things about the contract restructures. Some were saying that they actually only got the team back to the cap ceiling because they were 7 million over.

Too much hype train for me!

What a glorious day....no more Wright, signed Megatron.

I know. Now just get Tulloch re-signed and it will be a perfect day.

Or, withdraw the franchise tag from Avril and sign Mario Williams. It will be like an offseason of Madden.

It's funny how they mention the Redskins in the example I found.

Say, for example, a player wants a seven-year, $60-million contract. Let's say that the owner decides to give that player an $11-million signing bonus, which is all paid out in the first year but gets factored into the cap as prorated over the course of the seven-year contract ($11-million / 7 years = $1.57-million per year). Most NFL contracts are "back-ended" -- most of the base salary is located in the last two or three years of the contract. If we suppose that our player's contract is structured so that he has a base salary of $2-million the first year, with higher base salaries in the final two years of the contract, the $13-million (base salary + signing bonus) paid out in the first year appears as $3.57-million to the cap! The advantage of signing bonuses for the owner is that he now has more money to spend under the cap. This is how the Washington Redskins ran up a total payroll of $92.41-million in the 2000 season when the cap was $67-million. The advantage for the player is that all signing-bonus money is guaranteed to be paid, whereas an NFL contract is not guaranteed.

heh. So wow, the salary cap has doubled in a decade.

Anyone else hoping that Peyton pulls a massive swerve and signs with a team that he's supposedly had no contact with?

Houston. Only because that was my prediction and I'm probably way, way off.

How Garçons contract was broken down to me by a friend.

$21.5M guaranteed = $11m signing bonus, $2.1M base salary in 2012, as of today the $5.6M base salary in 2013 is only guaranteed for injury but will be fully guaranteed if he is on the roster three days after the 2013 league year starts.

2012 cap hit = $4.3M, 2013 cap hit $7.8M, $8.8M in dead cap if he's not on the roster in 2013

Mlive is reporting that Eric Wright will be signing with the Bucs today! Hype train continues!

This is the greatest newws ever!

Nope, THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS EVER

Lions beat writer is now saying that deal saves us $9 million in cap space this season alone.

I LOVE MARTIN MAYHEW

So this brings us to day 3 of the Curtis Lofton for Detroit Campaign!

And this time there is hope!

Peyton Manning will chokeslam John Elway through a table at a press conference and will then reveal a Houston Texans jersey underneath his shirt.

So 9M + $10.6M tagged to Avril + $1.6M for the Cowboys/Redskins cheating = $21.2M.

Try and sign Mario Williams for around a $12-$13M number this year, sign Tulloch for $3-4M and still have $4-5M to resign Backus and some depth at CB.

Twitter has been such a mess the past few days! Last night it sounded like Flynn to the Browns was a done deal and now they apparently have no interest in him at all. So weird.

Sounded more like they were throwing out offers, and maybe it's a lot lower than he expected so everyone has to re-access the situation.

This sucks. I am so fucking busy with work and the kids that I don't get to share in the FA madness. Making this post outside of a Chick Fil A as I take 15 minutes to eat something.

Someone please make fun of whatever the Cards do with Kolb and please be sure to also give Yankeehater shit over his love for him.

I've been pretty busy myself, but since I don't have kids, I'll make the extra effort for you and make a Brady joke every day.

Flynn is Cassel 7.0 with more hair and skills and stuff

Just imagine the domestic violence that would ensue in Wisconsin if Flynn went to the AFC and beats the Packers in the Superbowl.

If it ever happens eznarks wife better stay away from the table saw and probably seek police protection. Remember the "accident" that happened to her dad after the Packers choked against the Giants?

Flynn is Cassel 2.0 with more hair.
Cassel started a whole season. A better comparison would be A.J. Feeley when he was in Philly, Kevin Kolb and his two career starts, or Matt Schaub's days in Atlanta. I'm not sure Browns have the pieces in place right now for Flynn to succeed.

I still can't believe that the NFL is getting away with docking the Redskins' and Cowboys' cap space:

But it came out now because the league needed leverage in order to get the NFLPA to agree to it. And the NFLPA agreed because the league in exchange helped pump the salary cap from $116 million to $120.6 million for 2012, which may have helped NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith save his job, given that his contract expires this month.

Last year’s cap was $120.375 million; a drop less than eight months after the signing of a new CBA would have potentially triggered a mutiny.

So, fine, the NFL and NFLPA agreed to this. But here’s the thing. To the extent that the league and the union were agreeing to a fairly significant modification of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, it happened without formal approval being obtained by the league (via 24 of 32 owners) or the union (via its Executive Committee and Board of Player Representatives, at a minimum).

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...sue-nfl-and-nflpa-revised-cba-without-a-vote/

I think this could end very badly for the NFL, it is clearly collusion and they are also violating their internal rules.

Not happening. I think more realistically it will be extending Avril, getting Backus back, possibly re-signing Tulloch and starting Aaron Berry at CB.

But I will still dream of a Suh/Fairley/Williams/KVB defensive line. Cutler would retire.

Does that number make sense? Shouldn't it be, $9M + $1.6M - $10.6 = $0?

I am sad to see Winston go. He wasnt very good but still it is nice to have extra OL for depth plus swapping 6ths is basically no return. I wonder how much this move saves the Eagles?

More cap space.

Happy they have resigned and re-upped some guys here.

Still holding out hope for Lofton or Tulloch.
