Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

First, you guys complain that S-E always open their hype machine too long before release. Now, you're pissed because they won't do it even if the release date is most likely still pretty far.

Nomura acknowledged that they shouldn't have announced the title so soon, and told everyone to -forget about VersusXIII- for a while. I know the FNC debacle isn't excuseable, but right now he's at least being consistent with what he's told us before.

Probably one of the (if not THE) biggest epic fails in gaming I've ever seen.

Since 2006, I've:

+ Finished university
+ Traveled all over the world
+ Gotten a full time job
+ Bought a house
+ Had a baby
- Not played Final Fantasy Versus XIII

And that's where the similarities are.

but the can of worms has already been opened, bro

and it was opened eight years ago in 2006

I'm still waiting patiently, there are a lot of good games coming out soon (and many others already out that I still have to buy, and don't get me started on all those games I already own and should be playing before buying new ones...).

Up to now SquareEnix had a lot of things to work on, developement actively started only recently, before that it was just a concept.
The fact that they still haven't been showing anything to the public is just because they still aren't ready to do it. I think that this is more a reason than SE not wanting it to steal the spotlight on XIII-2. I also think that we won't be seeing anything significant at this E3. TGS 2012 is my best bet, if they still haven't showed anything by late January 2013 then I'll start to worry...

[Wild prediction time!!]

This game will be released on the 8th of November 2013 in Japan, 21st January in the US and 11th February 2014 in Europe... remember, you first heard about it here! ;)

Jokes aside I also sometimes wonder where will I be and what will I be doing by the time this gets released...

I wouldn't expect more than an upscaled CG trailer for X at E3. It'll probably be TGS before we see any real footage of the game.

I disagree, it's just a remaster of the game. They have everything developed already & they just need to change the visuals along with maybe a few other additions. Mon Hun 3 HD already had gameplay footage when they showed it off... (granted, it's another company but still!)

Damn, he's posting from 2 years in the future and the game still isn't out. Though that might be because PS3 no longer exists, Sony and Microsoft are both out of the games business. Now it's just iPad 5 vs. WiiU.

Must be a good game then. Will buy.

LoL possibly. Maybe the game part is better, but I'd have to ask why people would think that. Is it because there's a lot more? Are the improvements actually good?

Sure the combat is a lot more flexible and fixes some complaints. Switching party leaders and not dieing when party leader dies are of course welcome. But the game now is pathetically essay. At first I complained that staggering was different , but it doesn't matter. Most of the battles in XIII you will kill enemies without having to even bother. You can basically set your party to being all Commanders. It doesn't matter. Say what you will about XIII. At least I had to switch to a defense paradigm, a stagger pardigarm, and then an all out one for a a good portion of the battles. And you would have to do these at a moments notice because the tide of battle could change whenever or maybe now you just had that window to breath. For me this made the battle system fun. it had tension and it cut out the tedium I would associate with other jrpg systems. in XIII-2 most battles feel like tedium and there is no tension. Just bum rush everything and you will be fine. The final battle is pretty good though.

So the skill system is a bit more open since people didn't like the skill system in XIII, it was as linear as the game's levels. This is actually a cool improvement. Since the game allows you to prioritize what jobs you level and your party makeup. There's also a small minigame in maximizing how you spend your points. It's actually pretty cool, but you level up so fast that in the end you will have everything. There's little risk, because will not only is the game easy, but you will have everything. So that reward you get in making a party and then against all odds beating everything up even though everyone said so in so isn't good at magic, but you made them a mage anyway is gone. Because will they will eventually be what they were supposed to be anyway and not like the game challenged them anyway. So in the end it just feels like "whatever". At least in XIII I felt the way I formed my party meant something and it was pretty hard/impossible to make everyone have everything during the main game.

There's also monsters. In the end their leveling feels more like an annoyance then anything. They use items to level. So basically in order to level up a monster you can buy stuff. But higher level monsters take higher grade stuff and during the game that stuff may not be available. So now in order to level them you have to be lucky enough for that stuff to drop. It will, but never in good numbers. So I have to grind double lets say just to level monsters. And this becomes even more annoying if I want to have a steady group of monsters. So it just kind of sucks to me. Why they couldn't have monsters have a normal skill system and have them gain skill points based only if you use them I have no idea.

Area's arent corridors anymore, but now thier just levels. For me, what I like about FF and just jrpgs/rpgs in general is the sense of adventure and traveling through a world. While XIII was linear and lacked many of the world building things that even FFX had, I still felt like I was traveling through a strange world. I don't get that from XIII-2. They are mostly levels that sure, offer some exportability, but their not connected or anything. So you're just in a place and you do stuff there and only there. It's ok and fits the story of the game sure. Just a personal reference really.

And well the story is bad. XIII, fine you can say it's story bad. But I'll defend it though. It had a point, a narrative that at least made some sense and went with it's themes. Things did'nt just seem incredibly random, except maybe the ending. I don't know wtf happen in XIII-2. It just seems like things happen because "paradox". Things just seem incredibly random as if the game is trying to pull whatever it can out of it's ass. And that's how I feel about it. Parts of it connect to XIII and some of it makes sense. But I mean just the idea of time travel is random enough. Like where the fuck did this come from? It really does seem like it's an acid. I don't know, Noel is cool. Really good voice acting.

Thats pretty much all I can remember. Also pretty stupid fun music. Either way, i thought the game was just meh. Take that for what you will.

I wouldn't mind that Versus is taking this long if fans would stop claiming this game to be a Godsend from Square.

I feel like it has taken way too long and no matter how good the game comes out, it will not meet a lot of people's expectations.

I am just expecting/hoping it is better than FFXIII

You know, I had mentioned that'd we'd be likely to see X HD & XIV 2.0 but I think it's likely they'll show the Vita release for Type-0 in the west as well. That will be the tribute to Square for the anniversary of FF this year. I just have a funny feeling that will be the case.

Who knows with these guys.New producer letter out from Yoshi P on FFXIV 2.0 seems like they might not make the deadline they set.

Translation from official forums by one of the members posted by Jinko in the official XIV thread:

"Looking through current, checking on the project goals and checking the mile stones status, and within that meeting we also exposed the 2.0 FFXIV client which already started the QA process. This is really a large scale project and running alongside with current version we have to actually look to feel the reality of this.
(Remaking a MMO in year & half is something the dev team also believes it's not realistic ^^)

So the 2.0 client is finished to a level where is reality. For that swapping the maps for dungeons, transferring the contents and renewal, releasing lots of quest, how much to include using mass production. We're currently in that phase.Required spec will be lowered and we will also release the PS3 version. We are working hard so more and more customers can play the game. So please encourage us."

I am curious to see what they are going to be showing at E3 because it seems like Yoshi P does not want to show us this until it's a "game" and basically said for us to wait longer in the new letter.Their teams seem to be a complete mess over there.

I think we won't see much of Versus media until e3.
They probably don't want to advertise the game until they're done with FFXIII-2, releasing the Lightning DLC in May.

Feel like this game has the potential to really shift the JRPG genre which I think has been stuck in too many tropes, realtime fighting, original setting/characters, open world JRPG (really hoping for a 1:1 world map, but doubt that happens)...damn this game has me excited, as much as the original KH game when it was first announced
Refined KH gameplay in a serious setting seems to me like the best thing ever

Aye, this is the same for me too. Information such as this:

"The city scene where Noctis is fighting the Behemoth is full of destroyable objects such as trees and electricity poles for example. In the 1st Department Premiere trailer, you end up fighting the Behemoth on a three level freeway area where the road has been damaged so you'll need to move around by jumping. The buildings that line the road have some emergency stairwells that can be entered and climbed to get to the roof with Noctis then pulling himself to the very by using the air conditioner. These are just some examples on how interactive the game will be."

Along with...

"GAME SYSTEM

Open field:

Players will find a big world map with vast fields where the players will be able to explore as far as the eye can reach except the mountains.

Use of a car for a faster movement is possible and will come in handy a lot of times due to the distance between places.

It’s possible to fly airships over the world just like in older Final Fantasy titles.

Terrain diversity is much more detailed and vast than in Final Fantasy XIII.

The day and night cycles, and floating of the clouds are done by physical calculation. It was decided to be made this way to have a smooth change between the cycles, and to have a more dynamic light system which reflects the mood of a certain region/place.

Seamless:

The game is basically seamless, the only loading the player will experience is between large areas. Also they’re implementing a type of loading that happens while watching an event scene. This way it’s possible to give players the most immersive experience they have ever had.

The monsters wander throughout the field and sometimes hostile ones appear suddenly to ambush you. It’s been confirmed that a lot of different kind of monsters exist."

This is why people should understand why there are so many of us excited for Versus XIII...

This would keep me the most satisfied for a while tbh. Don't know what that says about me.

Says to me that you might prefer 10 over the games since then, might just mean you prefer the older style of Final Fantasy over what they shit out these days. Quite a popular opinion, it would seem.

Screw ports this game needs a name change something fierce.

Just dropping the XIII might be even worse though as then everyone would think its a fighting game.

That would be the case even with Versus XIII as the title. I also doubt SE gives a crap about what people make of their game titles. Versus' marketing will make it clear what the game is to those who don't know.

I'd give ANYTHING to be a part of that team to help market this game... for serious! xD

Yeah this isn't 1995 where only certain people would read game magazines or something to know what is going on. People will probably work it out.

Chrono Trigger doesn't NEED a successor, thinking like that is what runs series' into the ground.

Like Final Fantasy? :teehee

Also, I wouldn't consider a 3rd entry in the series, revisiting the universe in some form, as anywhere near running it into the ground. Yes it doesn't need it but I'd prefer it over a fourth spinoff FF game. But I digress.

Cross had a much less directed story, worse music (only because Chrono Trigger's music is some of the best ever) and worse characters. Chrono Trigger never really feels like you're grinding our experiencing filler content and has extremely balanced battle mechanics. IMO they're not even in the same league, even though Chrono Cross is still a great game.
