Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Probably a little of A, a little of B.

Whiskey probably wasn't in the position for long-term survival, and was looking for buyers. Sounds like Jeff helped broker a deal that sold the two most popular sites to CBSi, while the rest of the sites when to another buyer.

Comic Vine is more popular than Tested.com? Surely you jest?

I know Comic Vine is much older than tested, but damn...

I've said it like 100 times, they should've stuck to their guns on charging for the bombcast. I don't have 80 hours spare a week to watch their videos, especially their premium content ones. I religiously listen to the bombcast and would've paid $50/year for it.

The lack of Rorie is extraordinarily depressing. What's the word with him?

I'm a huge fan of film (wannabe movie buff I suppose) and I always found his thoughts on movies really refreshing. Same with Alex really and I guess he won't be doing any Screencast anymore.

Fuck

Fuck

Their first idea was terrible IMO. They would have been holding back populate content instead of creating new content. I know not everyone has the time for it but I think they are better off with the new segements. It envolved Dave and Drew much more, win/win

edit: I secretly want Rorie to join Half in the Bag.

OP needs an update about who is going with them.

From what I understand it's:

Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny, Patrick
+ Drew & Dave
+ some other engineering guys

Is that right?

Have put a bit in the OP about the CBS stuff. Will update again once things have settled down a bit.

I think CV is in a much less crowded market, and offers something pretty unique in Comics. At least as unique as you can be on the internet. They are much older too, like you said.

Think how many sites there are out there that are similar to Tested.

I imagine those willing to pay were far far outnumbered by people who weren't. If you really valued the podcast that much, you should have subscribed anyway, despite them making it free.

I woke up really late today (I have a evening job) and boy was it bizarre waking up to all of this news. Took me a while to catch up on everything. I'm personally really excited to see what comes out of all of this.

Dave is answering questions on the giant bomb chat right now so I asked the one thing that really matters about the future of the site -- will there be a DCS black shark quick look. He said Drew is learning so there probably will be one sooner or later.

So good to hear, finally we can stop worrying and get back to enjoying the site.

Also wondering if the GS management has changed since Jeff left.

Alex mentioned on Twitter that "the regime at CBS is very different than when we all left." So, yes?

Not sure how different management changes the whole hostile environment thing that seemed to exist between the editors and marketing staff back in the day. I trust the GB crew in their integrity, but I worry they will have to face that same advertising pressure again.

Issues that matter! Fuck yeah.

From his Twitter it sounds like Rorie's pretty unsure what the hell he's going to do now. I feel for the guy, I hope he's able to figure/work something out.

I think comicvine may be the biggest 'pure' comic website in terms of traffic. IGN is bigger, obviously, but they do other things.

Here is what Dave said in the chat about still having premium subs despite being at a bigger company.

I get asked this one a lot so I'm gonna take a second to answer it in a couple lines. What is the reason for subs if we're working with better ad teams....

The real answer is that having a large sub number really gives the editors the freedom to continue covering content in the weird way they do. We're a very different site, and focus more on personal connections with our users.

When you have that base, it means that you can focus on that base to a much larger degree than normal. Outside of the benefits you get, it basically affirms that you want this kind of non-traditional gaming coverage.

I hope that answers it as honestly as possible. Basically, subs let Jeff and team be who they are naturally.

Well Screened is part of the other deal with Tested and Anime Vice. So I guess it is still a thing at least for now. Can't imagine they'd buy it just to shutter it, unless it was an all or nothing type deal.

thats cool. I hope they don't get too many people cancelling and bailing out on them. What they really need is lots of people visiting the site to demonstrate how big an audience they can pull, so that they are less likely to get stomped on by the overlords.

I guess so long as they keep making the content though, people will keep coming.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet.gif

The only good thing that can come from this:

JOHN DAVISON BETTER BE ON THE BOMBCAST NOW

I can't believe Johnny English is Giant Bomb's new boss.

Davidson's a nice chap. Say what you will about his itchy trigger-finger with trends and predictions (I wont say A GODDAMN THING ABOUT THIS as I do it too), but he's a swell chap. I couldn't see him buying a milk cow (GB) then butchering it for steaks (corporatizationalizing it to tapioca). He ain't stupid.

Dave is coming. Crisis somewhat averted.

Clearly you weren't here for 1UP Apocalypse

Alex Navarro is going full time with Giant Bomb, I'm sure you guys love that right?!

It's like a divorce proceedings. "Whiskey Media to get visitation rights to Dave Snider on the weekends"

Must not be cynical. Must not be cynical. Must not be cynical.

I read that as along as GB has subs Jeff and team can be who they are. If the sub numbers drop or don't meet goals that must mean people don't want that "non-traditional gaming coverage". I hope I'm wrong.

Reading too much into it is pointless I think. Obviously they are going to go in the direction that works best for them. You can only hope that the future holds only more creative madness.

It's become closer recently.

oh wow so they actually moved from the classic GB offices. I really liked that place, with the couch and stuff, and the brick wall, etc.

the classic office was in Sausalito.

Or in Jeff's living room if you want to really take it back further.

Soooo...

- Dave is going with the GB crew, as is Alex.
- The GameSpot memberships are completely optional and completely separate from the GB premium memberships.
- Giant Bomb as a whole will still be a completely separate site and entity from Gamespot.

...yep, we're good here.

Those are my feelings on all of this as well :)

Sure it's sad seeing the "small family" atmosphere taking a bullet in this case but you've got to keep adapting in new ways to survive. Glad to see big moves being made whether people agree with them or not.
