Had a nice guy help me learn yesterday. I know the community can be awful at times, but I've found that if I straight up say "I suck, please bear with me" right at the start of the match people are generally forgiving.

He was helping me play Sand King. Can you guys give me tips? He had me get a Blink Dagger ASAP, and then work towards Blade Mail (that's a simplified version). I'd love to hear how he should be played from people who know. This guy did well in the game, but it was a pub game, so who knows. Nice guy, if you're a gaffer "Jake", then thanks :).

Blademail is crap. Manaboots + blink is all you need. Ag for luxury. Pointbooster is good regardless even if you can't finish it. Just don't be underleveled. Your ultimately wins team fights.

best game was when I used Venom, we were losing like 15 / 2 'cause Sanjay fed them with Huskar and they were trolling hard too. later BH and SF got fat and won the game.
obviously Yuber lost that one too as Proph.

I fed them nothing, it's the lane they kept killing :| it's why having 3 carry lanes wins you games! Mid and Bot had free farm for first 20mins.

I think I should show you how to actually play NP as puppet failed both times.

I got this game a while back but everyone was mean and nasty when I didn't know anything, and that turned me off playing it :|

Ever meet a rude person in real life? Does that mean all people are rude? I'd give it another chance. There are friendly people in the community.

Just got into the beta! I'm pretty bad... the only skills that transferred over from LoL for me were my ability to last hit and deny pretty well. I just don't understand the champions yet... like that silencer. How friggen long is that silence!

Come into the neogaf room and ask someone to play with you, we are all nice and do not rage (98% of the time). You should just mute someone in the chat if he is raging at you, helps alot.

Manaboots? AG? Help a noob out :). Not sure what those two are...

edit: Ok, Arcane Boots. AG?

Both Purge and Maelk streaming the DTS vs. fnatic game.

Heard there was some PGG fallout, he's playing though but dunno about the rest of the team...
Bulba is standing in and Maelk assumed that another guy was Vigoss (not sure if he really is at all) t_t

Yeah, I was trying to get it down, but fucked it up quite often.

So I hit the Ult key (4, in my case) and then just as the channeling finishes I hit q and click next to the guy to attack? Is that correct?

Shift queuing is your friend with Sand King. The game will blink you in the absolute millisecond your ult finishes channeling so you don't miss more pulses.

Ult
Shift + blink to the side of enemy team
once the game blinks you in burrowstrike them all
laugh while you get an ultra kill

I dislike shift queueing because people's positions might have changed during the time it takes you to channel.

I'm not sure about this cause I haven't tested it in Dota 2, but in DotA 1 it didn't matter if you shift clicked or you just manually clicked as fast as possible cause you missed one wave regardless.

edit: Tested it out, as long as you do it quickly after the cast it doesn't matter if you shift+click or just do it quick manually, you will hit all your waves at the blink target anyway.
Maybe I was wrong about DotA 1 and you'd hit all waves regardless (and not as I said miss one way regardless)

TL;DR: shift click blink or just blink manually quickly after the channeling time and you'll hit all the waves of epicentre

Count your blessings, some of us regularly sit at 10-12 games below .500 >:|

Right now, I'm sitting at around a 46% win rate. Probably about right for pure solo pub play.

My least effective:

Dragon Knight - 26% wins: He was my first melee character in this new-to-me genre. It took me awhile to get his farming down...then awhile longer to get his jungling w/Dom down. In fact, i wasn't until recently that I realized that there are only 2 spots where the really valuable ancients appear, and I had been stacking the wrong spots. Also, it wasn't until recently that I really got a good understanding of reading the minimap to determine ahead of time when the enemy was looking to push a tower (and that the team needs to gather). When I was a n00b, I wouldn't read the tea leaves and would find myself farming far from team fights when I was really needed. That wouldn't happen now.

Lion - 27% wins: half of my losses came from basic inexperience with the character. the other half from really bad teammates. Like the last match I played with him where my DP (who went mid) went 0/17/3. I went something like 7/7/14 and we were in the game until the end, but it's hard to overcome a player struggling that much. Seems to happen often in games where I go with a support or support-ish character, where carries just fail hard.

Lina - 35% wins: She was the second character I ever played in this new (to me) genre, and I probably started 1/7 with her. I'm pretty good with her now, but I still ocassionally struggle to hit moving targets with her stun. A big problem for me there is remembering how close she has to be to hit her stun. I'll often times click the area to stun thinking she's close enough to start it, but she actually needs another .5 seconds to get close enough. by the time she gets there and starts the animation, the enemy has moved and the stun whiffs. This gets even worse the longer I go without playing her because all the other stun characters tend to be able to initiate their stun from farther away.

My most effective:

Drow - 62% wins: i've just figured her out. I generally know what to build and what to do, based on matchups and which enemy character is the biggest problem for her and the team. It's pretty rare for me to perform poorly and/or lose with Drow. I can usually carry a team with a feeder. By late game, I'm click2killing people. Usually with some combination of Shadow Blade / BKB / MKB + Deso. But almost always a Deso.

Anti-Mage - 63% wins: haven't played him for awhile, but was very effective when I did. nothing special here; just farm until well appointed with fine jewelry and click2kill.

Riki - 69% wins: Easy-mode in pub matches. If I wanted to get my w/l record above .500 quickly, I'd play Riki 100% of the time. Most pubbers don't do the basic things (gem, warding) and pay for it in the end.

Zeus - 52% wins: My very first hero, and getting him above .500 was not easy, but I'm really good with Zeus now. Playing poorly simply doesn't happen with him. Only reason I'm not as effective with him as the others is because his late-game falls off. Losing with him is rare these days.

Destoyer - 63% wins: Q+ Click2kill once fed.

...hovering around .500: Lich, Huskar, ES. Haven't played anyone else more than a couple times. Coming along, with much thanks to GAF's advice.

What's the deal with PGG? I always heard comments like "no surprise" when people were talking about his problems in DTS.

ok then, I would love to watch.

Sand King. <3
I usually go for Arcane Boots, Blink, Aghanim's Scepter and Heart.
when you don't have Blink use burrow then ult, it should work if they can't/won't stun you.
when you have Blink Dagger use ult first then blink + burrow and sandstorm.

Ever hero I have had more then 5 games with:

Lich 32/18
Crystal Maiden 18/7
Witch Doctor 15/10
Omniknight 13/12
Tidehunter 7/8
Skeleton King 7/5
Venomancer 5/6
Dazzle 9/2
Sven 5/6
Pugna 4/5
Zeus 6/3
Vengeful Spirit 3/6
Puck 3/5
Jakiro 2/6
Spirit Breaker 2/5
Nature's Prophet 2/5
Lion 2/5
Dark Seer 2/5
Razor 3/3
Dragon Knight 3/3
Viper 3/3
Weaver 2/4
Sand king 2/3
Necrolyte 4/1
Chen 1/4
Sladar 1/4

For people I have never lost a game with, Outworld Destroyer, Wind Runner, and Axe are tied at 3/0.

Veil of Discord does more damage with SK ulti than Aghanim's Scepter I believe. It's a lot cheaper too, but doesn't give you any HP or mana.

Maybe we will start seeing it more with the recent string of buffs. If you have 2 or 3 people with some good nukes, it should be more then worth it.

Don't know my win rate offhand, but I'm definitely in a slump at the moment. I've spread my playtime so widely across the roster (one or two heroes I haven't touched at least once) I think it's now becoming something of a negative, high time to narrow focus and just concentrate on a handful of heroes across the various classes. My more successful heroes (understandably) have the most time spent on them, stuff like Earthshaker, Sand King, and Slardar.

how much solo pubbing are you doing these days?

word, word.

Whoa whoa. What? WTF is shift queuing? This is all news to me :).

So if I hit 4 (my ult) and then immediately hold shift and hit q and click on the ground where I want to go I will blink *after* my channeling occurs? Is that what you're saying? It won't interrupt my Ult?

Does this queuing work with other things?

Worth it if you have a team of magic damage, that can happen right after the Epi, I tried it with OD + SK and it was amazing, pretty much did all the damage for our team. That being said, I still perfer getting the Agha because it gives me HP / Mana and the pieces to build it help a lot in comparison to the Helm of Iron Will that does pretty much nothing. The cost for Agha isn't really an issue for SK, considering caustic is the best farming skill in the game.
What's the deal with PGG? I always heard comments like "no surprise" when people were talking about his problems in DTS.
Attitude problems coupled with being the best player on the team.

Nah I did it in a Pub, in the case of the Pub I was the SK, it was a stomp so it wasn't really that close, but me and the OD could pretty much 2v5 their team because between the damage from Veiled Epi + Sanity they would die.

That ultimate is so stupid, possibility of doing so much damage and it's instant, it's a shame the hero is so easily ganked.

Holding shift queues the actions you take.

So if you right click on the ground to move, then hold shift and right click somewhere else to move again, your hero will move to the first spot, and as soon as he reaches it, it will go to the second spot.

That works with spells as well, so you can channel the ult, shift click blink and as soon as the channel is over, your hero will take the next action, which is blink.

This has to be the most boring IH in some time.

Think I need to practice some more, played like complete shit tonight.

Sheeeit, I just noticed divine rapier.

No wonder I was losing the man contest.

Nah I bought that DR, in the last minute of the game, I had a Butterfly so there was no way you could win in a 1v1, similarly, there was no way I could win in a 1v1 either, you'd just lifesteal back to full. That being said, I'm trying to think of how I could've itemised better, if I bought an MKB I'd have to give up the BKB or Heart, if I didn't have BKB I would've died to chain sheeps, and if I didn't have heart I wouldn't live through the Cloud -> Doom -> Sheep -> Frostbite combo. Get rid of BF and I couldn't satellite push.

Hobart and Final need to learn to take criticism better, Final got touchy after being told to Midas and Hobart got upset I told him to watch his positioning, makes no sense to me.

I told Haly to KILL THEM ALL, and he did. I don't think he knew how strong he was.
