Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

Plus how can you ignore that weapons change your bar? That is huge for me. Even professions on their own will feel like another class.

Warriors in wow can't be ranged, but warriors in GW2 can.

I wasn't really trying to compare the two so much. They are both going to be completely different which I expect. I more just meant WoW seems to be trying to make all mages(for instance) play differently, but in a bad way. Where before you picked whether you needed an AOE or maybe a CC, now you get both you just pick what CC and what AOE.

It just seems like it is diminishing the different playstyles rather than trying to impliment them. They want to get rid of cookie cutter builds, so make all build technically the same. Kind of defeats the purpose to me.

I have a question about the game, I'm a big fan of crafting systems, one of the reason I liked FFXI, but FFXIV was a big disappointment in general, and of the upcoming MMO this and Lineage III are the ones that interest me the most, anyway does GW II have a crafting system?

Here is a video by Yogscast showcasing pretty much most of what we have seen so far of crafting. Not too many in depth showings on it so far.

Also someone on Reddit is saying they got an email on instructions to download the client for beta. :( Invites may be over... He also says the email states that invite is for the 30th. Seems kind of odd to me.

Edit:Shit, DP

Super fast crafting is amazing. Also might make sense. I need proof of email instructions. Pix with censors please.

I finally realize how huge it is that there are no factions, and it's one big community. That adds so much in building a world that feels like you don't have to make a choice and splinter the server and you can play with anyone, quest with anyone, etc.

Yay, Mega-posts are back!

id rather have a permanent banker with like a 12 hour cooldown on it or something than a banker that goes away after 5 days...that would deff make it more worthwhile to me

If I had to compromise, I'd be happy with a banker with a limited amount of time, but the timer only runs when he's in use. From the way they word it, it sounds like the second you active him, the timer is running.

Say whaa? What happened to the Round Table of Guardians? Who is the rebel that started this nonsense?!

Edit: Welcome back Retro. :)

Thanks. When I left, everyone seemed to be leaning towards Guardians and Charr.

It's sad that I see all the info on WoW:Mists of Pandaria and all I can think is it will be more of the same. I'm still interested in it and will buy it, but as soon as I get to end game I just see myself getting bored with anything other than the critter fighter, and this is if I even find Monk interesting. Pretty tired of all the other classes at this point. Also their changes to the talent trees just seem like more simplification to the game rather than trying to impliment variance from player to player.

My first reaction: "Ewww, Furries". Those female Panderen are just creepy-looking, even more than the female Worgen. Whereas the Female Charr look like a true sexual dimorphism, it looks like Blizzard just said "screw it, take the males and add pigtails and tits".

As for the actual gameplay, it looks like the Monk class will be very silly (Alcohol-fueled tanking?) and wonky (their healing tree looks very cumbersome). The changes to the talent tree will make it thoroughly idiot-proof (I say "Make a system any fool can use and only a fool will want to use it" though), the new zones look like Blizzard used Asian restaurant decor as their style guide, and the other races still don't have new models. They were looking bad when Blood Elves and Spacegoats came out, now two expansions later and they look absurd.

I can't believe anyone thought this was a good idea for an expansion. Any time the devs have to say (repeatedly) "They are not silly, this is not a comedy expansion, we take giant kung-fu panda drunkards very seriously!", it starts to sound like they're trying to convince themselves.

Meh.

As a minor addition to what others have said, I would like to point out that Ravious over at Kill Ten Rats mentioned that his press invitation was extended and that "this time crafting and trading are priorities."

Not only that, but there aren't actually divisions between the servers themselves. You can still hang out with people from other servers as long as it's not in WvW. Comp. PVP and PVE is supposed to be completely free of any server restrictions.

No longer will you find another GW2 player and not be able to play with them. I can't tell you how many times I've met co-workers or found out old friends are playing an MMO, but we can't play together because they're on Server A and I'm on Server T, or he's a Green guy and I'm Red. In a genre that's supposed to be all about community and social interaction, MMOs to this point have made it awfully hard to actually play with friends.

Oh, that's right, it's easy if you don't mind pissing away $25 to transfer.

Meh.

I'm all fine with the panda and decor aspect, I actually like the look of the enviroments. The tree changes is what has me bothered the most. The Org raid actually sounds interesting as hell, but then I think of how awesome something like this would work with GW2 dynamic events and having a huge group rushing a city, and not just be a raid that most probably won't experience.

As a minor addition to what others have said, I would like to point out that Ravious over at Kill Ten Rats mentioned that his press invitation was extended and that "this time crafting and trading are priorities."

Great news, hadn't seen this. Hopefully he will focus on seomthing other than armor and weaponsmith.

As for the world, the only thing I hope they put in is some kind of dueling. Hopefully with some kind of wager mechanic. Sure we can play with our friends at any time, but I want to fight them and bet on it!

Should be nice to finally see something besides the common Armor/Weaponsmith. As much as I like to see "festering" weapons and whatnot, we need cooking!

WoW already had a sort of tongue-in-cheek goofiness about it, which was actually part of it's charm; it didn't take itself too seriously. But right around WotLK, it felt like the tongue had stabbed its way through the cheek and was blowing raspberries at the long time players. Or, as my wife puts it "When they had a raid with motorcycles with the license plate "PWN" on them, it felt like the game wasn't for people my age anymore, it was for 13 year old boys."

The Pandas just feel like a misstep to me. And as someone who has spent a ton of time looking at different styles of architecture and cultural design, the style of the new zones is like, borderline offensive. It wouldn't surprise me if the vendors all sell Fortune Cookies.

Yeah, the guys over at KillTenRats tend to grasp game design concepts much better than the average games blogger, so reading their stuff is always a treat. I wouldn't be surprised if they spent the event trying out all of the different crafting occupations.

Yeah, I'm definitely curious as to how the non-equipment crafting works out. Mostly because I want to see how they plan to handle food-based buffs. Plus, my wife is planning to go cooking (it was her profession back in EQ too) and some details on that would be awesome.

Cooking is said to be the most difficult trade skill. As the Norn say, I like the challenge set before me, even if it's cooking =). Off topic: I didn't get a chance to choose a trade skill in my 5 years of playing EQ, I wasn't sure if it was worth it.

Where is our supreme robot overlord, Jira?!

I'm hoping ANet opens up to more communication the closer we get to pre-purchase. So many people asking on their FB page about status of beta invites. Rubi is slacking!

Oddly enough, WotLK was when WoW was the most serious I've ever seen it.

That seems really nitpicky. The motorcycles in Ulduar are what I assume you're referring to.

Nice find, another good read today. I've been reading "Ghosts of Ascalon" and it's very good. If you want to bone up on the lore, there's a great start.

Nice, I might read that. I haven't played GW1 since it was in beta (was addicted to WoW back then) so I'd like to read up on some of the lore to get a good sense of the world before I play.

I was actually thinking about doing this myself. I've heard a lot of people saying the lore was great in this thread, I should read up on it.

Hoping they tell us soon if all invites were sent.
Seems beta people are able to download the client (from reddit).

The people making those claims are either press or lying. None of the invited non-press people have gotten anything new yet. Since Anet seems to be inactive during the weekend, I think it's much more likely a second wave of invites will be going out tonight, if it exists at all.

Hopes back to full steam!

Yeah. No one in that reddit post has confirmed otherwise. Plus no screenshots. Very fake. You never know though...

Holy crap, that is a huge and quite detailed figurine. I'm not a figurine guy though. That thing will stick out like a sore thumb in my apartment. :lol

Honestly though, the things I'm interested in most are the art book and CDs .... and maybe another CE exclusive emote. They must, absolutely must, include something like that. Even if it's completely useless and embarrassing. No, rather, exactly BECAUSE it is. That's one of the points of CE's dammit.
/dancenew ftw.

Oh well. Haven't posted on GAF for ages, but what can you do. Refreshing my inbox for the invite email did become a somewhat unhealthy obsession recently - frankly speaking, I'm starting to fear for my sanity. Must... cling.. to... hope... hrngh...

Just as an aside, how many of those super deluxe CE's will they be producing? Having nightmares of waking up to a "sold out" error message would break my poor little mind.

Info about the ingame store tomorrow.

Curious to see how this will work... I really hope they stick to their words about no imba items. -_-

GW2 is definitely my cup of tea... I have to admit when I saw Pandaria I thought about coming back but GW2 is more of my game artistically speaking. The aesthetics are amazing.

Yes, the motorcycles in Ulduar. And it wasn't that singular element alone, it was merely the straw that broke the camel's back. WotLK actually was a step towards a more serious tone, but you can see how badly they botched that (Arthas shows up to gloat then runs away the entire expansion and keeps his massive world-destroying undead army on the front lawn.)

Nice find, another good read today. I've been reading "Ghosts of Ascalon" and it's very good. If you want to bone up on the lore, there's a great start.

Just bought it for my Nook, gonna start tomorrow probably.

Hopes back to full steam!

Back to full steam? When did the hope ever dwindle? I was dead to GAF for a half a month and my interest hasn't dropped at all.

I'm hoping for more too. $20 is pretty substantial increase in price for what amounts to a taste of cash shop items, a pet and an elite skill that can't be any more powerful than the defaults. I'd be happy with just some vanity items to proudly display that I was an early adapter. As shallow as that may be, that's the point of getting on board early; to show your support of the game.

I mean, they know people like me are gonna buy the CE anyways, but it would be nice to get something more substantial. And by substantial, I mean something as small as "my hands glow when I emote / dance" or "I have a fancy exclusive title in front of my name". I'm not asking for a flying rainbow unicorn mount that shoots tomahawk missiles from it's arse.

Just as an aside, how many of those super deluxe CE's will they be producing? Having nightmares of waking up to a "sold out" error message would break my poor little mind.

No word yet, but I should hope for plenty. That said, April 10th is going to be a day of substantial F5'ing for me until I'm sure I've got my massive CE.

Info about the ingame store tomorrow.

Let's cross our fingers!!!! Hopefully ArenaNet will update the beta invite status on its FB page. Would at least stop my f5 key from taking more abuse......

I'm sure this was posted by Autobot Jira, just don't recall seeing it. So, if old, just ignore...but I absolutely LOVE these PvP armor sets.

Ugh. Not a fan of that female elementalist. Why can't she have the nice robe that male has?

The male thief armor also looks a lot better.

So after looking at a thread on reddit, the two biggest worries about the game seem to be the following:

1. Once people hit 80, they won't have anything to do.

I don't understand this one at all, is it that hard of a concept to grasp that you don't have to sit there and do level 80 content over and over? That the game is built like an FPS where no matter what you play, all maps are relevant and challenging? That you're given loot for your actual level? Play where and what you want to, don't think of this game like other MMOs where the game starts at 80 because that's simply not how things work in GW2. I really do wish they did away with levels like they originally planned, that way people would have got it out of their heads that the number by your character portrait literally DOES NOT MATTER.

2. Game will be too easy.

I find this one funny seeing as I've seen bosses one shot people at level 4 and groups of 3-4 mobs kill people in 5 sec flat at level 3. Then of course we've seen people get smashed in the first story mode dungeon and write-ups from killtenrats about how stuff gets serious as soon as you hit the level 15-25+ zones.

I'm with you on this, I've seen videos where mobs were kicking around people like rag dolls. Reaching level 20 in GW didn't mean the entire thing was over, you still had storylines to complete, other continents to explore, and hitting those elite areas such as Fissue of Woe, Underworld, and nowadays Domain of Anguish.

They managed to go 6 years in GW1 without adding items to the cash shop that screw up the game or make anyone more powerful. I don't see why they would start now.

I think you misunderstand. They (probably) won't add anything to the cash shop that affects a player's power, as was the case with GW1.

That won't stop people from freaking the hell out and proclaiming otherwise, and that <MMO x> would never do this sort of thing, doom and gloom and otherwise trying to make a big deal out of nothing more than XP accelerator items, extra storage and some fluffy animal companions. No big deal.

The response from the community though, of course, will be wildly overblown and entertaining.

My only concern for the game is what is the most important RPG element to me. Making your character more powerful. It sounds like your character doesn't have that much room to grow in this game and that you'll be able to quickly "max out" a character's power. But I'm probably wrong. And I hope I am, since that's a lot of the fun in an RPG.

Not at all, when you hit 20 in Prophecies, you were about or right into the Crystal Desert so at that point you were 7? Missions still from being finished with the story and at that point you sure as hell didn't have the highest armor gear nor ANYWHERE even CLOSE to having seen really much of anything in the game at that point. You were just getting started at that point.

Guru's response will be golden. They're going to EXPLODE over the gems, just wait. EVEN if they're 1:1 for $ to gems, they'll EXPLODE. It's sad that Martin has to constantly tell that community to stop being retards and jumping to conclusions.

Think of it like this. There's no such thing as one best set of gear that you only wear like other games, you're going to be changing your builds and therefore you're going to need to change out your gear to reflect that. You're not going to have instant access to every sigil/rune/jewel, so you're going to have to obtain these through various means as well as gear that goes best with your build. Gear will cap out from a statistical standpoint at 80, however, you'll want to move your stats around. By that I mean you wouldn't want a ton of vitality if you're trying to make a max crit build, if you wanted to stay alive you'd try to focus on vit and toughness, etc. Stat progression becomes horizontal when you hit 80, there's progression based on your current build, it's just not continuously tiered like other games. Also, real progression is done through your skill as a player, that is where your progression never really stops.

I agree with that sense to some extent but what I don't want is to constantly have to worry about CONSTANTLY upgrading your gear. There HAS to be a better way to progress your character in an MMO. I believe Arenanet is probably concerned about the same thing too.

I can see where you're coming from though Jira, you certainly would need different gear sets based off your skill sets too. But I just mean if you have a particular play style you want to stick with.

The book is an excellent read, it arrived three days ago. I started reading it yesterday and got half way through. I was so engrossed in the story that I couldn't put it down. I have the 2nd book waiting for me and I can't wait to finish this one. Also, I can't wait for the ingame store information. I plan on getting probably skins for my toon if they're available, help to diversify.

So after looking at a thread on reddit,

That's really all you needed to say right there.

To the point though, it's gonna take a while to shake people out of the "the game really begins at max level" mentality. Likewise with the difficulty level. That's not even factoring in the potentially painful process of unlearning broken mechanics like aggro-tanking and heal-botting. The people who are hardcore into traditional Diku-MMOs are going to find it even more challenging.

They'll either learn or quit. The beauty of moving away from a subscription based model is that ANet still profits the same whether they stay or quit (though ideally those who stay spend cash in the shop).

Agreed. There's been over a decade of your traditional mmorpgs. There might be quite a few who've been playing for so long that they might not want/be able to learn the new mechanics. And that's fine, to each their own.

Where can I pre purchase this?

Well seems like anywhere but I guess my question is where is the best place to do so? I want the physical packaging for sure.

Well, I know many people here feel otherwise, but I feel as though the "endgame" of GW2 is the PvP. That is what will keep people playing. WvW and tournament PvP will keep people playing just like FPS and DOTA style games keep people playing. And then new PVE content can always be added- new areas and such.

My perspective on this game is that it's going to be mostly about PvP after the first 6 months. And I'm glad because the PvP looks amazing (especially WvW).

I also think there will be many popular streams from PvP similar to what LoL has experienced. I do think the PvP will become a popular E-Sport.

Yay epic response too!

Info about the ingame store tomorrow.

Good, I want to see what they do with it, and what I can buy.

Yes, the motorcycles in Ulduar. And it wasn't that singular element alone, it was merely the straw that broke the camel's back. Just bought it for my Nook, gonna start tomorrow probably.

How much are they?

Same here!

I still have faith in them.

Same answer!

Skins, dyes, character slots, extra bank storage, hairstyles, weapon glows...

My prediction. And that stuff is fine. GW was fine, why would they mess up GW2?

Hairstyles.. oh god weapon glows.. yes...

I think you misunderstand. They (probably) won't add anything to the cash shop that affects a player's power, as was the case with GW1.

This is not going to be the case in GW2, considering you have much more to explore, lower-level zones you haven't hit, etc. And there is the fact that certain sigils and such are not available yet.

Not at all, when you hit 20 in Prophecies, you were about or right into the Crystal Desert so at that point you were 7? Ah neat, wish I still played GW1.

Amen!

GW2 is not WOW, you will not worry about upgrading your gear, but rather progressing laterally against challenging content as it's released.

I have the 2nd book waiting for me and I can't wait to finish this one. Also, I can't wait for the ingame store information. I plan on getting probably skins for my toon if they're available, help to diversify.

Grr want to read!

The game really begins when it begins.

I mean, you're going to find tons to do in GW2. Maybe I had a long day and I only want to play an hour but not a dungeon. I'll jump right into WvWvW!

*smashes a patrol to pieces and later dies*

Alright, next day, finished work, I want to do something else...world events!

I'm personally going for the CE myself since I want to support ANet. At least there will be a small community of GAF folks to play with...

What? have they been looking at the game AT ALL?

It's reddit. What do you expect?

The game really begins when it begins.

I think never playing any MMO at all since Guild Wars have saved me from the ridiculous stupidity of thinking the game starts when you reach max level.

I'm there now. I assume I can just put cash down at Gamestop or something right now though.

If you want to get into the betas and get the three-day head start, then a normal retailer pre-order isn't going to get you those. Only a full pre-purchase will. I'm not sure which retailers outside of that site will be supporting that though.

You would be right, me thinks. However, you will only get one day headstart.

There will definitely be, and I'm still going to run my Nightwatch late night gaf guild alongside the main GAF guild.
