Wanting to try the game out before launch and saying "No beta invite no buy." after the first closed beta invites go out is a little different. :lol

I'm not saying it's not valid to want to try the game out, it certainly is. I just don't understand how one can think GW2 is better in most ways besides combat and graphics, and choose the other because you get a chance to play it first. Not trying to fight in favor of GW2, Blindfolds said those things himself, I just think thought process doesn't really make sense.

I'll try this again,

The reason I'm not buying Guild Wars 2 due to not getting in this beta is that this is the only time I'd get to try guild wars 2 before I absolutely need to purchase Tera.

The pre-purchase beta window will be too late, and I'm not taking the risk of waiting.

I am only buying one MMO, not two. It doesn't matter if GW2 has an online fee or not, I don't care about that. I am only buying and playing one since I cannot personally split myself between two games, that's just how I am with MMOs.

I enjoy Tera, I think it's a really great game. Every weekend for almost two months I'll have been able to play it for 3 days up to its launch. I have experienced all I need to know that it is a game worth buying and I'm excited for it.

I am also excited for GW2. I loved GW more than any other MMO except DAoC.

but GW2 is a radical new direction for ArenaNet. Sure the quests are the same as every other MMO, but the way the world is structured and how you experience it has me really excited. From what I have seen in video however, the combat looks sluggish and somewhat unenjoyable. I am sure that this is due to press members not really having any idea how to play, but with the NDA for this closed beta and no opportunity to play it myself I'm making the decision based on what I am absolutely sure is a great game.

Same here, I'm getting the CE and the wife is getting the DD. She knows I go for the goofy boxed stuff and we really don't need two statues.

I'm also getting a new computer chair for my birthday in April, so that's another $200+. It's not exclusively for GW2, though the chair I'm in is second hand with broken wheels so there's some comfort issues depending on where the broken wheels have me leaning.

I'm okay with the mouse I have. Maybe look into something fancier later in the year.

Ummm... okay. See you in a few months when the veneer comes off Tera and you realize it's WoW+. It's your gaming dollar and you can spend it how you like, but I think you're being more than a little impatient. Good things are worth waiting for, remember?

I can't speak for everyone, but I can't go back to clicking on quest givers, killing x# bad guys waiting around for me to kill them, rushing to max level for the 'real game' to begin and suffering through tank & spank encounters. Not after I've seen the alternative in action.

I get what you're saying, the time at which GW2 beta weekends start was a bit late for you to consider purchasing the game and risk losing $. I get that. However, many of us might not even get into the betas except those after April 10th but will still buy the game due to the information/media released. Some don't require playing a game to determine their purchase. Me, personally, I've seen nearly every video released, read every article and this game has astonished me in nearly every.

I was fortunate enough to play it at Gamescom 2011 but that was still on my own dime. But even before I played the demo last year, I already knew the game was going to be a hit for me and I dove right in and have yet to regret it.

Like I said earlier, GW2 is the same thing. Instead of clicking on quest givers, killing x# bad guys just pops up, and they will be waiting around for you to kill them too, if the beta videos are accurate. They might be fighting NPCs, but WoW has that too.

Tera is radically different than WoW in it's game play, GW is radically different in how it presents and evolves it's world.

Both of them definitely take some fundamental things from classic MMOs though. I agree some of Tera's PVE is lacking, but Tera bosses fights are hardly tank and spank, you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

I love how you can trade gold for gems(store currency) without having to actually use real money. Nice.
 
Was hoping for some more talks of things to look forward to in microtransactions. :/

As for the gem to gold thing, I think it is a smart move. People will bitch about for some reason or another, but I think it would greatly decrease the amount of gold spammers and still allows those who would rather not pay for things to invest more time in game to get what they want. Now to hear more about this trading post...

The fact that players can legitimately buy gold through Anet will immediately drive the gold farmers out of business; the risk associated with buying from foreign black market gold alone is high enough that even undercutting ANet's prices probably won't help them get a foothold.

I'm not a fan of cash-for-gold, but it beats the alternative; endless spam and farmers.

Yup, exactly. There's no reason to risk your account if you can do it legitimately.

The fact that you can do gold-for-gems too, though, is a cut above any similar systems I've seen (does Spiral Knights allow this?)

This has already been stated on a numerous basis but the reiteration is always comforting. This is what solidify the item shop.
 
I'm not sure a finer point is being conveyed here - he said you can buy gold from other players with gems. That has very, very different implications for the economy than creating gold out of thin air.

On the topic of Micros - I love the idea of gold for gems, it rewards players who spend a lot of time in-game to be able to buy stuff over time. Being able to buy gold with gems however is a little discouraging and I don't know how it will do with the economy, but I think ANet has it well in-hand with their Trading Post (global economy, etc).

I distinctly think the amount of people buying gems just for gold will be very low, indeed, and gem to gold ratio of how much things cost should even out - meaning, it will stabilize at a 2:1 ratio or something based on how much it costs to buy gems.

I do believe the "Trading Post" has an option to set up an item for X amount, and if someone is looking to buy for X amount, it'll transact automatically - not that hard to set up something like that if you need to.

Correct- it factors the "people are going to spend real money on gold" aspect of an MMO into the in-game economy rather than creating a black market.

Off the top of my head, I imagine there will be a legitimate trade market that evolves... when a new item in the cash shop is released, demand for gems will skyrocket and they'll cost more gold. In off times I bet the price of gems will stabilize and largely trend slowly down until the next spike.
 
This makes me think they will be adding things to the store constantly. If you can convert items to gold and gold to gems, after a while a lot of people will be having most of what they want from the store. Hopefully a lot of additions to the cash store also means more in game content as well.*

*I know there would be, this just gives me the impression that there will be more going into this than I previously thought. Good stuff!

Pfft I'm buying a whole new furniture set for my office including a new executive desk for my computer (have been using cheap crap from Target for years) AND building a new computer before this game comes out. Granted, my computer desk is a piece of crap and I've needed to upgrade the furniture, not really doing it for GW2 but GW2 is the catalyst for getting me off my ass and doing it. Been holding off building a new computer for over a year, waiting for the final release date of GW2 even though my system will end up FAR more powerful than the game requires. Hooray for tax returns!

Right, I always think of them as the same because the rare occasion that I bother to pre-order, I always fully pay it off. Good point since it's completely relevant to his argument. Too bad he won't be patient to find out which one is really better for him.

I would really like to see some example items they're considering so we have an idea. I'm sure there'll be plenty of skins but what else? Character slots I assume?

Edit: Same with Squall, i'm building a new PC, buying a new desk, getting a mini fridge just for this game. =)

I just did the same. New desk and built a new pc, pc was mostly for this game. Still plan on getting a new chair and new monitor before Diablo releases.

Costumes, pets, more slots for characters, bag slots, armors, dyes, and much more.

What would you pay for Arken?
 
The dyes I'll want to find on my own eventually, or I may pull the trigger on some rare ones.

Armors seem kinda cheesy to get, unless they are not obtainable in-game.

I'll bite on Hairstyles though. Auras too or something.

Should let you customize what Guardian color aura he has. Instead of the cool blue flames, you can do straight white, or gold, or... anything!
 
I wanted to buy Guild Wars' Collectors Edition but it's not worth it. I don't want the statue and I'll just buy the artbook seperately.
 
I am not a huge fan of costumes nor pets as I see them as digital code (think Matrix). However, I would gladly pay for more storage space because I carry too much damn stuff around like a pack rat. I have friends who love to show off their characters so they'll flaunt it on customization on characters.

I need to go back into GW1 and finish the Winds of Change questline.
 
I wish there was an option to pay 14,99$US like others MMOs and have access to almost everything in the store (like Lord of the Rings Online).
 
I see my self mostly buying character slots and storage. Dyes I will want to go out and look for as just more reason to explore and what not, and skins I may look into later on.

I almost think I am going to go overboard on character slots. I was thinking just enough to have one of each profession, but then I thought about another one or two to go through entirely in pvp. Not even sure why. :lol

Nice touch with the mini fridge! I'm getting a Desk, bookshelf, hutch, and a two drawer cabinet for the hutch to rest on. All matching set. Can't wait, love the look of cherry finish on wood.

Chair is the only thing I don't need to get. Will have to get everything new for computer, built my current one back in 06 or 07 and my monitor isn't HD. All must go!
 
I'm a hoarder. I've got a full storage pane full of bows on my GW account just because I love my Ranger and like to collect gold bows. I'm going to buy so much extra storage that people will look at it and go "dude... you may have gone a little too far." And I'll smile smugly to myself every time.

Edit: I also find it beautiful how gems are very apparently a replacement for ectoplasm as the elite currency of Guild Wars. The fact that the gems are useful as real-currency tokens and not elite crafting items whose value is entirely artificial will be interesting. Ectos are relatively stable at about 8/8.5k, while real-world sales and other things will affect gems' values more heavily, possibly more regularly.
 
I was moaning about the CE price but... Why is the standard digital edition £50? Not even Origin charged that much for the standard edition of SWTOR... I mean I realise it has no monthly fees, but I thought that was the point of the microtransaction system.

I guess I'll have to wait to see what price the retail copies are. Cheaper I hope.

Read about 3 posts in and had to stop. It seems like everyone saying you can just buy to win the game is forgetting the Karma aspect. From everything I have seen it seems like most of the higher teir gear was bought with karma and that was attained from dungeons and sertain dynamic events and bosses etc.

Is everyone forgetting that he said there are 3 currencies? If they say you can't buy to win and you can only buy gold or gems, then obviously the stuff that would give you an advantage can't be bought with gold or gems.

The chair I have is second hand, it isn't in the worst condition but it is not confortable at all for long durations, which I expect to do often very soon. Monitor I have now just has a lower res than I like and is 16:10, looking for a nice 1080p one to replace it.
 
I will fully admit I am a sucker for these kinds of cash shops. LotRO maybe over-extended itself sometimes by putting in stuff that shouldn't have been in there, but for the most part it was full of dumb stuff nobody actually needed but regularly found its way into my bags. Looking cool in an MMO is something like 51% of the experience.

Tera is an awful Korea MMO. It's not going to be worth playing over GW2. Take a risk and do GW2.
