do you use the old version of the downloader?

Buying Legend of Grimrock on Steam or GOG... This would be an easier decision in favor of GOG if they offered the entire soundtrack and not just the theme. I do kind of like playing with achievements too... :|

So less emphasis on old in the title? I'm cool with that, I think it was a bit of a stigma to some people who would otherwise enjoy some of the games on offer.

I believe the achievements in this game are designed to extend unique challenges, so it is a disappointment they didn't implement them outside of Steam (afaik):

In bigger news we have implemented 40 achievements, some of them pretty challenging to unlock.

My first run through the game was about 10 hours and I knew all the solutions to puzzles. Some testers have reported play through times much longer than that. If you go with the Old School Mode (automap disabled) and explore every nook and cranny playtime will be longer. On top of that, we have plenty of secrets, achievements, different party builds and difficulty levels to try after finishing the game.

Other than that, it's nice to see the game offered (as well as newer DRM-free titles), and buying directly from Almost Human costs the same, only you get a Steam key + cheevos. I'll probably end up passing on the GOG version myself, unless it is confirmed they will include them outside Steam.

I picked up Darklands yesterday for $3, as it looked great. Not sure how it holds up though. I have never played it before and thought I'd pounce. Anybody have any comments about this game that has played it before?

Also snagged AitD collection since each game comes out to only be $1. :)

Does anyone know of anyway to switch my keys over, so that I can use WASD to navigate in 'Lands of Lore' instead of the numerical keys? I'm thinking something like xpadder except instead of changing keystrokes to joypad inputs, just swapping and customising key inputs for certain programs. It's kind of annoying shifting my keyboard all the way the left on my desk in order to get into a comfortable playing position.

Thanks for the heads up, I think I will probably end up doing this too.

Yay, their site updates finally fixed my games page. For a long time something had borked with it and there was always one blank space and then the last game I own (actually this was only visible if I set Jagged Alliance as the last game, I could work around it by putting other games there) on the shelf, plus seemingly more invisible blank spaces since it was showing two extra empty shelves long before I had filled the last one which is the only time it should add another.

I bought Darklands yesterday too, I found this review of it to be quite long, and quite nice.

yes, you can set any key/button to any other key/button with the dosbox mapper. ctrl-f1

I hadn't realized they changed the games page up, all my careful familiar sorting by genre was completely undone. Apparently now you can't even use the extra space at the end of a shelf to sort stuff, it auto-stacks it on the end. Not liking this at all.

I wonder how related the Quest games are related. Can we skip the first ones without losing too much ?

The Quest for Glory games? No, you definitely don't want to skip the first, it's probably one of the best ones... though they're all pretty unique and fun. You import your character from game to game as well, and there's special bonuses for importing (besides carrying over profession / stats, like unique dialog for starting QfG 3 as a paladin which can only be done via a QfG 2 import, or having additional spells if you import a wizard, etc).

hehe. to be fair to whoever at gamespot, hasn't it been a couple of years since that voting list/db was linked to from the front page or anywhere else on gog?

Heh, the whole conversation ends up being moot because the new site design has the wishlist massively updated and much easier to search :p

I love GOG and everything, but I feel like the effort spent getting these newer games could be better spent going after more older ones. That probably sounds ungrateful, haha.

I felt this way at first but then I realized most of what I want is high on those wishlists and they'll still be going after them hard. Yeah it's nice to see smaller random games I've never played show up, and I hope they don't stop showing up since they way they sign publishers seems to be for the bulk of their catalog and there is no real downside of releasing them. But on the off chance that there are fewer old games showing up, personally, I already don't have enough time for all my games so...

I also wouldn't be surprised that it's getting harder and harder to secure some publishers. And hell, some of them would probably be easier sold on providing them if they could also provide newer ones, though so far the newer game initiative seems MOSTLY either somewhat older games (Darwinia) or stuff that fits with the style of what they have anyway (Legend of Grimrock).

I've spent the last few hours looking for an 'offering' to the demon looking oracle guy in Lands of Lore. I've searched that dungeon back and forth, over and over again. Reading guides, I know I'm looking for a dagger as I got the 'dagger in, dagger out' note, but I'm still utterly perplexed.

They don't make games like this anymore, that's for sure lol.

Yeah, I guess as long as they don't have long period where nothing "classic" shows up then it's no big deal. I'm just worried that that is what's going to happen.

That crossed my mind also. Apparently LucasArts has been tough to get the rights to put their catalog on there, for example.

The current head of Lucasarts flat out refuses to release anything without DRM, that's what's keeping it from GOG.

System Shock is being held by an insurance company who wants some exorbinant amount of money to release the rights, far more then GOG would make by selling it.

This should help you:
"Dagger In... Dagger Out." There is a niche on the east wall with a note (“dagger in...dagger out”) and a button on the north wall. Take the note out of the niche. Put a dagger in the niche (the niche will disappear and then click the button on the north wall. A lever will appear where the niche was. Pull this lever (the lever will disappear), and then click on the button on the north wall again. This time a lock will appear. Use the lock picks to pick this lock (the lock will disappear), then press the north wall button again. A niche will appear. Place something you don’t need (like that “Dagger” note) in the niche. The niche will disappear. Press the button on the north wall a final time, and a passageway to the west will open.

It's pretty ridiculous imo, oh well. I still have most of their stuff on disc... and I was thinking, oh, at least you can get it on Steam, then use it with ScummVM etc, but from what I remember, they altered the stuff on Steam and it isn't compatible with ScummVM.

Maybe they're just worried that since ScummVM is so affluent everywhere, phones, PCs, Macs, handhelds, consoles, etc, that releasing anything it supports is losing potential money on other platforms? Or maybe they just suck. Probably that. Here's to hoping the current presidency at LA is a short one.

But... it's already out there... this is what I don't understand. I would think they'd be racing to give legitimate customers an avenue to give them money. Eventually some of them will surely give up on waiting and go another route. One that doesn't give them any money at all.

How long until the person retires or is replaced by someone with a brain?

CDPR Spring Conference on 5th of April.

"Just two weeks before we launch Enhanced Edition on Xbox 360 and PC, and we’re doing something that is truly extraordinary. I don’t think anyone’s ever done something like this for their gamers. We have prepared pretty big surprises for gamers of all kinds, and we think that you will enjoy them a lot. If games are your passion, watch our conference." said Marcin Iwinski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt RED S.A.

Any fans of digital distributor GOG.com would also do well to watch the stream, because there’s a lot of news brewing at the DRM-free store. With news about upcoming games from big publishers, what the "Bigger, Fresher, Newer'" GOG.com means for all PC gamers, and a special surprise for RPG fans, the GOG.com portion of the show is another must-watch as well.

Don't know if it's thread worthy but it sounds awesome.

As long as he keeps squirting out profitable shovelware he keeps the shareholders happy which means his job is secure.
Thing is it kind of seems like they're not even accomplishing THAT much. How many games did they release last year? Preferably fully on their own, given that EA co-published Old Republic and seemingly handled a lot on that front given the lack of manual and all.

By the way, I voted on the Ys games and threw Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim on the request list. Dunno if Xseed's seriously considering that or if Falcom would even be game for it given the no-DRM policy, but it'd be nice to see Falcom games there too.

The last thing I remember them doing was the look at the earth go up and down in this generic looking shooting game! Oh and unleashed 2 I guess. They're probably making star wars kinect. They could be making this instead. Point is they're dumb because they're not releasing their magic stockpile of amazingness to the right crowd of people and missing out on free money. The scummvm people did all the work for them already.

Or maybe they just suck. Probably that.

It is idiocy. ScummVM is powerful and pirate versions of all LucasArts' classic titles are easily available. With GOG releases (not to mention with an expansion of their Steam catalog) LucasArts could convert these from worthless vault assets into money-generating titles, but instead the company has spent the last decade being run by extremely foolish, worthless people.

This really needs to be fixed.

It'll fix itself eventually as the company discovers it can't actually extract any value from its asset as long as no one will actually pay their asking price.

:(

I would really like to get System Shock 2 and Maniac Mansion on GOG.
