Lounge

Wonderful combination of materials, clean & modern but not clinical cold. Amazingly executed!

Chittagong, I think it's the light, but is the stain on your hardwood in your living room a different shade than in your dining room? Actually in general I'm surprised that you went with such a light stain, if someone had shown me the room I'd assume the floor would have been a chocolate or so, closer to where your dining room table is.

Also contrary to Tabris' advice, I like your "gimp plant", which looks to my eyes to be a "ponytail palm" -- beaucarnea recurvata. The sansevieria (probably s. trifasciata) has got some beautiful colouration too, it stark clean room colours help it really pop! It's nice to see more GAFfers lately have some plant life.

It's actually part of the same space, the lounge continues to the dining space (see the bonsai style plant in both pics for a point of reference).

The colour of the floor was by and large determined by what was already in - the floor was pretty much the only thing we kept, although we gave it a sanding and three-four layers of varnish to lighten it up (it had got nasty orange). If I would have the funds to replace the floor too I would probably have got in something slightly rougher, a shade darker and less saturated - and would have thrown underfloor heating in for good measure.

Re: plants, I'm really bad in picking plants. I would want something to the bedroom but can't figure out what and where. Maybe something small to the night tables.

Moved to China last November, finally bought and set up everything to make me feel more at home :)

Based on your relatively minimal setup, your existing plant choices, and the fact that you want something small, I'd recommend an arrangement of dracaena sanderiana (sold in stores as "Lucky Bamboo" although it isn't actually bamboo). It can be grown in water or soil, and is often sold as a sort of topiary, cultivated into spiral shapes. It's incredibly low maintenance, difficult to kill, requires basically no potting space, dirt cheap.

Two example pictures:

But it's available in a really wide array of setups so you have a lot of flexibility in terms of size, shape, and presentation.

Wow, those look incredible. Will get them, thanks!

I have one. It is indeed great ;)

whats the best way to go about doing re-modeling projects like that? i want to refinish my hardwood floors and also remove the texture from my ceilings (popcorn texturing ughh)... but its going to be a pain to move all my furniture out and get the dust clean afterwards

Correct me if I'm wrong it's been a while since I installed my hyper212+, but why do you have it blowing air down? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have it blowing up / back towards an exhaust?

yeah it looks like he cant fit his fan on the bottom side due to the ram stick placement..

EDIT: the PSU is mounted on the bottom (exhaust facing the front).. that rear "exhaust" that you see is actually an intake and the case exhausts through the PSU to the front .. one of those weird layout cases

trust me, it's best to get all your crap out of the way - or at least completely empty one room at a time. one of the biggest single factors in delaying our re-model was the fact that we cheaped out on storage and had our furniture shipped to the flat before it was done. our thinking was it could sit in a corner - obviously builders ended up having to rotate the stuff all around the flat, taking tons of time. Considering the lost time having temporary storage would have been much cheaper. Plus, everything was dusty and we spent the next two weeks cleaning it.

I just wanted to say, I blame this thread for turning me into a closeted interior decorator. I hate/envy you all for having nice setups. Now I have a folder on my computer solely for interior decorating ideas and such.

No, the air flow is actually from bottom to top (which is now it should be). I currently don't have the fan in the back plugged it, I have it there just in case it gets hot during the summer. And even if its turned on, its an exhaust. The PSU is just in its own zone, sucking the air in from the bottom and exhaust through the side.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Great recommendations, Tabris, and most of them should be easy enough to do. Need a new dog bed anyway, but yeah I could hide it for the picture, same goes for lamp cable. Painting cables, can that be done? What kind of a paint and process would you use? These are rubbery XLR cables we have here.

Respect Chitta, love it thanks for posting.

Wish I would have got my post in before Chitta's (which is fucking amazing) lol. Anyway, here's my setup, not much changed since last year's thread.

Man, I was planning on getting some of these, only to find out that most if not all stores in The Netherlands have stopped importing them. Apparently tiger mosquitoes likes the lay there eggs in the plants' stem and they have made there way into our country and people's homes this way.

Have you checked IKEA? Can't imagine they stopped selling them as well.

Just upgraded, sorry for the shitty quality photos :3.

DIABLO, I AM READY!

Don't know if you are still viewing... but...
Ahh..I have been waiting for this post for 3 years now...Absolutely beautiful!

Couple things:

-Where is your Artek table? The Raft table is excellent but I thought there was some sentimental value to that Artek, not to mention the chairs.

-Also, don't get rid of the sansevieria plants and ponytail palm! You mentioned before about the "subtle Africa theme" you were going for and those plants really fit that.

-My final question, what process did you use to get the walls like that? I am sure this is an odd question, but smooth walls are incredibly rare where I come from, and in our new house I would like to take the time to achieve the same effect. Overall it just looks amazing with the white paint and minimal art.

Thanks Sean! Yeah there was real mounting pressure the longer it took to post pics as the flat just kept dragging on. Still one tiny thing is missing, our blinds - just placed an order for some lovely grey Luxaflex Duette blinds for the bedroom. Will get pics once they are fitted.

Alvar Aalto table and chairs, don't worry, they are fine - they needed another sand and varnish, and the chairs needed new ribbons. That would have been as expensive as the new kit, and given we have done it already twice we figured we could use a change. So I offloaded the table and chairs back to mom in the Swedish archipelago who will take care of them for the next decade. They are 30 years old so they are pretty valuable, and no doubt will look great in 10 years too if she now restores them again.

Walls, check out my flickr, you'll see some making-of pictures there. It's basically plywood and plaster. So put plywood first, then lay out the plaster with a flat tool. We had a superb Polish guy do it for us at £120/day. Then just 4 layers of medium bright white matte paint. The British paint is a bit shit though. You can't wet wipe it and it is a magnet for scratches, so I am thinking of importing some Finnish paint.

Good point about the Africa theme! I must admit I was not a huge fan of this plant myself but now that you mention it, makes sense

Nice, great to hear the Artek stuff was not sold, Haha. As far as the walls, I will look into that. Never heard of that process until now! Something I was going to try is call "Skim coating", still not sure how it works.

I actually do not have my own house, as I am entering college and would rather live at home then pay for housing. So my design experiments have been sort of restricted to my own room. Also, we are renting for just this year, other wise I would have ditched this repulsive carpet a long time ago for some maple hardwood or even concrete.

I made a couple improvements from the last time you saw my setup (added a lot of art, decoration). Also refinishing a custom hairpin desk I made a couple months ago. The pictures are somewhere in this thread, around page 12 or so.

A few changes from last year.

Just put a new Monitor in my Blast City (The old one is waiting to get put into a buddies Blast Cabinet).

Sorry for the awful pictures and dirty gameroom, but you get the point.

Eventually I'll get the good camera out and take some proper pictures.

Damn! proper gaming den! the size of those arcade sticks on the pinball machine are immense!!

Thanks!

Those are two 15th Anniversary Street Fighter Sticks I have fully redone for a Supergun setup and a newer MK stick I refurbished. They are MASSIVE compared to my newer sticks. I rock a Dual modded 360/PS3 Agetec and it's a baby compared to these monsters.

Nice room! Those SF anniversary stick have enough room for a supergun construction, they are huge! I still have on in the basement.

What monitor did you put in the Blast btw? Original Nanao or other brand?

Man, I wish I bought some of the VS cabs from my old workplace when they got rid of everything last year.

Same with the huge Beatmania IIDX setup :(

It's a newer model of the Nanao monitor. I was surprised at how little burn this monitor has compared to the original Bass Fishing cab.

If I may ask, is there any reason you chose not to post higher res pictures of this setup?
I would like to know this aswell!

They are available in my Flickr, realchittagong

Just thought that for most people this is the convenient rez since I had quite a few pics

I just can't get enough of these modern minimalist homes. They are just too amazing.

If anyone should start an interior design thread, it should be Chitta.

Went a little crazy and got me a new 60" LED. I sit three-four meters away, so it's like going to a cinema. Speakers are hidden behind it. All three consoles, digital TV tuner and Apple TV 3rd gen hooked up. Bunch of retro consoles in the cupboards and controllers in the drawers.
