Ninja Gaiden II: The Official GAF Thread of Chaos

Like several others here I'm going to hunt down a copy of NGS2 instead of NG3... what a sad predicament I'm in.

I just did the same. I was so bummed by the user impressions of NG3 I went out and purchased a copy of NGS2.

I have NG2 on 360, but I only made it to Chapter 8 on Warrior, and then my 360 broke and that was that.

So, I picked up NGS2 last Tuesday and beat it on Saturday night. I was hooked. Played it on Warrior, and I just started my Mentor play through. There were a few things I initially didn't care for, like how the weapon upgrade system changed, but after a bit, I prefered it.

I like the Momiji/Rachel/Ayane levels, too. Not too long, gave you a nice break from playing Ryu.

I to decided to put in NGS2 the other day after playing 3. I forgot that I fucked up my master ninja run. I am at the boss on chapter 15, zedonis redux (sp?), and like an idiot I played all drunk one night and wasted all my items right before that fight and I only have one save file, so I am stuck at that fight with half a bar of health and no items. I am so pissed because there is no way I can beat him now. I wish there was some way to cheese that fight and just get through it.

If you never played chapter 11, you're missing some pure action gaming bliss. I still have savegames for every checkpoint of chap11 on Mentor and Master Ninja difficulty, just to replay it whenever I feel like it. Totally worth suffering through all the bullshit and problems of NG2.

I just checked my achievements and I stopped at chapter 10. I remember lots of flying enemies, but that was a few years ago.

I had started an NGS2 run through, since I remember liking that better, but after playing NG2 I realize how sparse the levels actually are. A lot more encounters and since the battle system is so fun, I don't mind it a bit. We'll see how I feel once I start getting pelted with exploding shuriken. :P

Playing NG2 after mostly playing Sigma 2 is kind of easy. Most of the enemies barely have any health, and they tend to delimb pretty quickly on Warrior in NG2 Vanilla.

I think I prefer Sigma 2 just because it has a chapter select. And its missing some lame bits that were in Vanilla (Lava bridge pelting you with rocks, water combat). Mind you, it doesn't have the awesome staircase battle, so I go back to Vanilla for that fix. I mostly play NG2 Vanilla to cut swathes through tons of enemies, but there are parts that have nothing to do with combat that aren't really fun to deal with the first time through.

Haven't played NG3, so can't comment on that.

Does this mean you consider Sigma 2 the more difficult game on Warrior, or does it happen to help you out with NG2 is some way?

That's why I'll probably go for Sigma 2 on Warrior soon. Before or after Warriors Orochi 3, though - that is the question. From what I've read WO3 could take me 100+ hours to fully unlock and achieve everything in, so maybe I could use Sigma 2 as a break in the middle of that fun.

I find that I end up using more combos in Sigma 2, while in Vanilla I tend to delimb, guided jump, jump off, UT or spend more time just dashing to avoid IS damage. I don't think its more difficult, just that the enemies have more health. So I guess Sigma 2 let me be more free form with how I dealt with encounters, while NG2 barely let me into the groove of the game till things started clicking around the Flying Fortress stage.

If Sigma 2 had as many enemies spawning as NG2, with the added health, it would definitely be more difficult, but as it is Sigma 2 is pretty easy on Warrior. I started some of the Sigma 2 chapters in Mentor, and the grab damage most enemies do is really high. Though I think I rather have that vs the rocket spam that's in Mentor+ on NG2 Vanilla.

If you've played NG2 on Warrior, Sigma 2 on warrior is baby easy. I mean, you have the same combat system (meant for mobs of enemies) with about half the enemies. I guess they up the health on enemies on harder difficulties to add challenge.

The addtional mobs add to the challenge, but I found NG2 harder because arrows are limited and it is harder to manage item usage.

While playing through S2 I always had enough essence, since weapons were upgraded for free.

Thanks for the impressions on Ninja Gaiden 2 vs Sigma 2. It's been a long while since I played, and I don't believe I ever finished either Sigma title. Something else would always come up and since I'd beat the originals I didn't feel compelled to go back until the recent NG3 debacle.

FYI Newegg has Sigma 2 for $27.80 right now with free shipping. Cheaper than Amazon's current best price w/ free/Prime shipping I think.

... I just ordered a copy.

Hell, I'm playing Sigm2/Vanilla so I don't give in to my morbid curiosity with NG3.

I love NG/DMC/BAYONETTA, but I also tend to play B/C tier action games like Force Unleashed/Dante's Inferno/Hokuto Musou just to play something that diverges from high execution/difficulty or just something I can plow through on a slow day. So, yeh. Need to stay away from NG3 till bomba/bargain bin.

I still need to get back to this some day. I got to Chapter 9/10ish I think,
the two or three big dragon bosses
, and then just stopped for some reason.

Damn... I guess this is a testament to how godawful 3 is then. I personally found NG2 the disappointment of a lifetime, though that's compared to NGB, I guess that it could still technically be considered a capable/good action game. Compared to NG3, NG2 is probably a 10/10 game.

Why team ninja... why?

I wonder if this has happened in recent memory, a sequel so unequivocally terrible that people went back one iteration to its predecessor which in its own turn had a lukewarm reception.

exactly what happened to me. Didn't like 2 that much, 3 came out, now 2 seems pretty awesome :lol

Chapter 11 is by far the best in the game. If you're playing sigma 2 you'll be missing out a lot in that regard because that's probably the most butchered level in the game as far as enemy removals. It's one of the few changes I find completely unfortunate. :(

masterful OP.

Gotta get my name on that Mast Ninja board.
It really is the best OP.

After finishing black and sigma on MN I thought I'd try for this one, but playing 2 on mentor makes it clear I have neither the time nor patience for that. This is my limit I think.

The game is so ridiculous, insane and has such blatant disregard for anything that could be considered good design that it kind of passes "bad," goes full circle and becomes "awesome."

Yeah, I sold ng3 after playing the first 3 chapters and came crawling back. :P

Hmm. I don't think NG2 had that lukewarm a reception. There was a measure of disappointment from some after the sheer polish and balance of Ninja Gaiden Black.

But I admit, I was never let down by NG2 much. Not the same game. Only its tuning issues bugged me, like the obviously rushed enemy placement and artificial difficulty spikes.

Now that years have passed and there's no hype or anti-hype left, I'm actually curious about Sigma 2 to see how it plays with rebalanced and redesigned enemy encounters and such.

But anyway yeah... it DOES say something. Is this a GAF first?

Has there ever been such a falling out from a new entry in a franchise that the previous entry was resurrected and people actually moved back there wholesale?

Has Team Ninja Dog invented fully functional video game necromancy?

Fuck it

I think I'm gonna play NG2 now

That's how bad NG3 is. It makes a game I despised in 2008 seem like a good idea to dig back up.

I just...all I can do is shake my head, man. That's all I can do.

After this OT had been languishing for about two years I'm just glad that people are catching on to Ninja Gaiden II once again. The game had it's fair share of detractors, but with NGIII's release, all of a sudden NGII looks much more favorable to a vocal number of them.

I think I want to play through NGB and NG2 again. I don't think I'll ever be good enough at these games to ever finish on anything more than normal, but I do love them.

If anything, I marvel at watching the replays from people who are truly good at them.

NGB has a really smooth difficulty curve going up the harder difficulties, you should definitely give Hard a try.

You guys should play the survival missions in Mission Mode. The pinnacle of action gaming.

Not fond of the idea of paying for Missions. I love NG2, but Microsoft is never going to lower the price on the DLC, and I feel I get enough of my fill from the campaigns different difficulties.

I'm picking up a new Xbox in a month and have a fresh copy of NG2 on drawer, so I will be joining you soon.

I also have a copy of sigma 2 somewhere but for the life of me I don't know where ATM.

Volf keeps blocking my Lunar UTs, what the hell? Reim lied to me in his MN Guide videos.

I have had a few problems with videos as well, I am guessing that they patched stuff at somepoint and some of the cheap stuff you could do to bosses before no longer works.

Amazing OP! I'm pretty active on NG2. I have to complete the game on mentor and master ninja to get my 1000/1000. Already completed all the weapon masters. I love this game:)

I think the run is done after the last patch, maybe I'm messing something up with the Lunar UTs. It's done anyway. Dragon Sword is still the go to weapon in this game.

NG3 has made me appreciate the art, bosses, and set pieces in this game even more now after having to experience the generic looking stuff in 3. There was litterally nothing memorable in that game.

You mean the first or the second Volf battle? in the first one you don't need the UT at all (just dodge his attack and use XXY), in the second he can block it but he won't always do it and you should at least kill some centaurs and get essence for another UT. Also, piercing void ninpo is your friend (if you upgraded it).

I admit, I've seen at least a couple of people on my PSN friendlist who loaded up Sigma 2 after finishing NG3. I actually want to play NG2 myself, but I don't have a 360 at the moment. So, yeah, this is an interesting phenomena, if you want to call it that.

That's because 3 has hints of that game we used to like...you get a taste of the good old stuff in NG3, maybe hope you'll get a better taste later on, then you realize that's just not happening. So, back to the games that actually deliver.
