From my limited but not insignificant perusal of opinions from people that actually own a galaxy note...

I've not found one that provides an overall negative impression. Most are really happy with the end product and experience of owning a device that is in the opinion of many without direct experience... comically oversized.

Take that as you will - but it seems to indicate to me that perceptions on the matter of its size are positively ameliorated upon actual use.

I'm frankly just amazed that people want a phone this huge. The stylus is just negative reasons to buy it for me.

5 million is very impressive for a device which everyone thought would be 'too big' and styli were yesterdays technology. Samsung did very well to carve out a niche for the product.

unbelievable how much crap ended up in this thread though

I guess it is two hands then. Found a video on youtube where someone used only one and it looked like he would get cramps in his hand at any moment.

I can't use it with one hand.

I can recommend the Zenus cases, they are made in Korea and I bought mine from ebay. They don't use magnets so they won't mess up the Wacom digitizer.

Thanks. I didn't know about the magnets.

I can see myself using this, until I think of actually using it as a phone... must look like a fucking fool holding that thing up to your face, in all honesty.

If that were the main issue, you could always use a bluetooth headset or wired one.

who knows, man. maybe sooner, maybe later. that's been the story for just about all Android phones since day 1.

who knows.

This is what I don't like about the Android market. No uniformity. If Android deploys a new update to the OS they should have a version for all their devices day 1. "maybe sooner, maybe later" for some devices while others already have it doesn't cut it.

No problem, you would just put a maps icon exactly where you want it on a homescreen, or even all of them, and do the same with the home or... oh wait, never mind. You were trolling.

I was down to buy a Nexus and even had an order in till I found out it can't access USB memory (important for me) so I switched to the Note. I couldn't be happier.

It fits in a jacket or fleece pocket just fine, has a massive battery, screen big enough so when you stream sport it's actually watchable, easy to text with etc etc etc. Stylus works too but I hardly use that.

I can see why it might be too much for people who want a small phone to keep in a skinny jeans pocket but really my next phone will be the next Note.

And since I don't notice or care what size or kind of phone people use I've never been bothered about looking like a fucking fool holding that thing up to my face, in all honesty.

Jesus I sound butthurt and defensive about this!

Anyway
TL;DR: Note is great, when you try a big screen you can't go back to squinting at your phone.

I haven't held one myself, but that size looks perfect IMO. Smaller was fine and good with flip phones, but I want my touchscreen bigger. Focus on weight, not dimensions.. The number of people fumbling their way around an iPhone simply because they don't have enough room to maneuver is mind-boggling.

The sooner the rest of the industry catches on, the better.

Well said. You'd have to be pretty insecure to even worry about looking weird using a phone.

linksys-spa942-ip-phone.jpg

This is bigger than a galaxy note. Was it weird holding this monstrous 7 inch dildo like device to your face? Apparently all of us look like fools since bell invented the telephone. Fucking Bell.

Who creates the metrics for how big a phone you can use before you look like a fool anyway? If you argue ergonomics, then you might have a point. Because some people have small hands. But looking like a fool? Come on.

I have a Note and i get comments for it every damn time.

"oh what a big phone! WOW"

Going back to an iphone 4 from the Note feels insane. It feels like when you first got an iphone and after 3 months, you picked up your old candybar style phone.

Honestly, i could not go back to an iPhone or any similar size display, its just too small. Browsing websites on the Note, i always browse the standard website and it feels like browsing on a real computer.

phones need to merge with glasses.

We're definetly moving in that direction, but tech is still playing catchup.

Like the tech now is better than top end displays from 5-6 years ago in some sense... and we've finally hit a usable limit on resolution (i.e. retina displays as apple coins the term)... so eventually, they'll be able to reduce the form factor while improving its function to the point that it becomes a serious product that can compete with normal screens and displays.

I estimate 5-8 years away from wide scale consumer adoption. The advantages are totally compelling if it's done right.

But without head tracking, without inbuilt motion controls... the experience is niche and a bit shit until someone figures that out.

When people borrow my phone, they always kinda half laughing. "Ah, its so big". The funny thing is girls really likes it, they find it really manly. Like, i sense they can feel attracted to the bigness of it.

The biggest problem for people will be using it with one hand. My hand is big so for me it works but i bet girls will have a hard time gripping around it. Especially doing the stroking movements will be hard for girls.

I think merging phones and glasses will still take awhile. I can't wait to see 3D HD glassless display on phones though.

I don't really understand how transferring from a thing you carry around in your pocket to something you have to wear on your head constitutes a move forward. Seems more like a move sideways to me. Contact lenses, on the other hand...

congrats but that shit is way too fucking massive for to me use as a phone. with the rumors about the iphone 5 being 4.5" or so, its getting me kinda nervous

It's definetly a sidegrade if you think about it only in the context of apps that we use today.

It's the biggest upgrade computing can get if you think about technology in the context of what such a device will allow.

Essentially, it'll provide you with full field of vision, head tracking display that can overlay the world, providing you with augmented and virtual reality.

Mobile phones stop becoming mobile phones... they become the computing back end to the glasses - the phone in some sense simply becomes a device that you slip into your pocket to give you portable computing capabilities.

Even standard programs and apps are massively changed up by such a product if it's done right... imagine designing applications where icons and fields can be oriented as 3D objects around the user, without restriction of screen size?

So my gf has been gearing up to enter the smartphone race for a while now, and she was going to buy an iphone, and i figured that was the correct choice for her. But when she came home she had bought one of these instead and she adores it.

It looks super awesome, but yeah it's a little bit too big to carry around in your jeans, but she will have it in her purse so that's a non issue for her.

I'll stick with my htc for a while longer, i'm not getting a man-purse just for this phone. It's hot but not that hot.

Some of this is fair enough, some of it just sounds like the kind of flashy stuff you see in movies but which I'm not convinced of the benefit of. Why would arranging icons and fields as objects around the user improve my experience, beyond impressing me the first few times? It kind of reminds me of those Windows shells where the desktop is a 3D space and you can physically arrange icons and windows in it. It's flashy and impressive but the usability plummets.

And any IOS sales thread quickly gets the android numbers thrown in. Your point?

That trolling is shitty and people need to knock it off? What the hell is YOUR point? That two wrongs equal a right? Page 1 of this thread, starting with the very first reply is goddamn embarrassing. Cannot wait until smartphones reach the kind of penetration that gets them more attention, and eventually leads to these threads being moderated the same way gaming threads are on the other side. Dude would have been banned quick as hell for that nonsense.

Because it allows a far wider range of possibilities as far as application designs go.

A couple examples...

Books - pages can be sized with respect to the user... as large or as small as the designer desires. Could even exit the limitations of the page - flipping from one text page, then to a large image that occupies a large percentage of your vision, with text that then overlays it on a different 3D plane. Then back to a page.

Using photoshop - instead of having to provide screen space to user interface and buttons, you can have the UI elements down by your waist - they come into view when you look down, but otherwise your entire working view, as large as you want is all image space.

Another is navigation... instead of 2D maps that you look down on, the directional arrows and even traffic data is superimposed over your field of view as you're driving along. No need to look down, and can even provide more information then without (maybe highlighting cars and pedestrians at night).

Or having the QR codes become an AR thing - instead of a link that sends you to a website, instead the cameras on the glasses automatically picks it up and orients it with respect to itself and your field of view. Could be virtual sculpture, or maybe a virtual animal?

Even mundane tasks become awesome... web browsing on traditional 2D planes - except having as many windows as you want, and having them orientate around you freely like floating windows. Have a window with a bunch of links up that you want but don't need to deal with now? Just push it to the side - turn your head and there it is.

Even if these things aren't tickling your fancy, I'm sure once the technology is unleashed that developers will come up with some crazy awesome ideas that will make us go... holy shit, how did we even do without this before?

At that point, even the people that hate on glasses will feel compelled to overcome that barrier. If the only way you can access this new digital world is through these things... you're going to have to really really hate on glasses for that to overcome the awesome potential that's there.

It kind of reminds me of those Windows shells where the desktop is a 3D space and you can physically arrange icons and windows in it. It's flashy and impressive but the usability plummets.

Well the main difference is that these glasses would allow perception in real 3D space, with your hands acting as real 3D space manipulators.

As opposed to pseudo 3D space with a basic 2D pointing device... on a fixed screen size.

I mean... if what I've said hasn't convinced you yet, then no amount of words will. Some people just need to be shown the shit, even use it first hand before they change their minds. Kinda like with the Galaxy Note.

See, all of this to me sounds like what I was saying about it being something flashy but ultimately just a hassle. Turning your entire head or body to interact with a user interface? Urgh.

iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Titan and the Galaxy Note.

I can understand the appeal but I personally wouldn't use something of that size in public, less because I think it looks silly and more because I live in a developing country where smartphones are just starting to catch on and anything of that size would draw too much unwanted attention here. #developingworldproblems

You aren't the only one. I considered the Note too, but when I saw it in person, it was just to much for me. Its to big. That's honestly why watching what kind of success it has had is interesting.

Christ, that is almost side-talking levels of bad.

I wonder how many people are still using the Note after a week or if they're sick of the size already?

Are you a quadraplegic? It seems like your griping simply because you want to gripe.

What I'm describing is the device that allows people to create a virtual digital space that is directly analagous to our real physical space.

We no longer operate in on a 2D plane, because we don't have to - we operate in a 3D space because we can.

When working at a desk, do you have everything that you'll need in front of you at all times, tightly packed into a 4-5" space? Do you not have things off to the side that you know are there, but that don't need to be in your view at that parcitular moment? Perhaps a desktop phone? Or a note pad? Pens, rulers?

Do you not wish that you could have more real estate on your desktop sometimes?

I suppose it's possible that you'll find what I'm describing unnatural and an anathema... but that would make you a very unique, and truthfully, kinda dumb and overly rigid as a person as well.
