Christ, that is almost side-talking levels of bad.

I wonder how many people are still using the Note after a week or if they're sick of the size already?

1. The note isn't bigger than landline handsets that we've mostly grown up with and become accustomed to.
2. Most smartphones are used more for their screens then their phone.
3. It's an excellent text messager.
4. From what I can tell, anyone willing to purchase one of these things will have any reservations quickly reversed as they grow accustomed to their screensize.

I couldn't imagine anyone that gripes about the size of the phone willing to buy one. But the people that do (buy one) frequently make the exclamation (after they've had time to get used to it) - it'll be difficult, or it'll be impossible to go back to a smaller phone after this.

Are you a quadraplegic? It seems like your griping simply because you want to gripe.

What I'm describing is the device that allows people to create a virtual digital space that is directly analagous to our real physical space.

We no longer operate in on a 2D plane, because we don't have to - we operate in a 3D space because we can.

When working at a desk, do you have everything that you'll need in front of you at all times, tightly packed into a 4-5" space? Do you not have things off to the side that you know are there, but that don't need to be in your view at that parcitular moment? Perhaps a desktop phone? Or a note pad? Pens, rulers?

Do you not wish that you could have more real estate on your desktop sometimes?

I suppose it's possible that you'll find what I'm describing unnatural and an anathema... but that would make you a very unique, and truthfully, kinda dumb and overly rigid as a person as well.

I don't find it 'unnatural or an anathema'. I'm saying that I don't see the usability improvements. I see a lot of bluster about 'virtual digital spaces' and a bunch of concepts that sound flashy and cool but an absolute nightmare to use in practise.

Take your desk space example. We move objects around real, physical desks because real physical objects persist through time and have physical extension whether we want them to or not. But the desktop computer paradigm is an improvement on that, because windows cease to take up a lot of space when we no longer need them. A whole html page turns into a small tab at the top of the screen for as long as it's not useful to us, ready to turn back into a space-filling web page as soon as we do. In this sense, a web browser is an improvement over, say, having several magazines on my desk, because I can turn a website into a tiny patch of space on my screen, but my magazine takes up a lot of my desk even when it's closed.

So importing these kinds of space-filling objects seems like a step backwards, or at least sideways, to me. It seems to be sacrificing all of the advantages of UIs in favour of flashy 'real world' analogues that are more cumbersome.

Perhaps it's just the examples you're using, though.

I am currently on a business trip to China and I can't get imgur to work without creating an account. Does anybody know of any other ways to host pics?

Well said. You'd have to be pretty insecure to even worry about looking weird using a phone.

linksys-spa942-ip-phone.jpg

This is bigger than a galaxy note. Was it weird holding this monstrous 7 inch dildo like device to your face? Apparently all of us look like fools since bell invented the telephone. Fucking Bell.

Who creates the metrics for how big a phone you can use before you look like a fool anyway? If you argue ergonomics, then you might have a point. Because some people have small hands. But looking like a fool? Come on.

Lol that was one of the few times recently that GAF got a good chuckle out of me. Bravo.

Honestly, I have not been following phone news for a while but this thing actually looks interesting to me.

I have pretty huge fucking hands so most phones look comically small in my hand. Something this size would be perfect for me.
I have actually been going without an actual phone for a couple of months since my iphone died.
Been wanting to get an android phone next since I already have an iPad. Might as well diversify. :)

I wonder if this things is offered through any providers n Japan. They used to love big ass phones anyway. Heh

What's cute about this thread is the folks that are so hung up about what others think of you on YOUR phone.

Between that and the Apple defense (offense?) force, I'm not sure what's more hilarious.

Looking at the side-view pic, it looks less awkward than I expected honestly. It's a large phone, but seriously, unless you're a very tiny person it is not an unreasonable size to use. An interesting point, I know very, very few girls that put their phones in their pockets. Most of them have such small pockets they can't fit their phone in their anyway (my girlfriend for example has an iPhone and cannot fit it into any of her pockets). She just puts it in her purse or carries it by hand. Having a slightly larger phone such as this would make no difference to how she carries it as the current phones are already too large.

NTT DoCoMo: http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/info/news_release/2012/03/28_00.html

Haha yeah I just googled after posting and found that.

Did this seriously just get announced like 20 minutes ago as well? It's like it was destined to be.

Not to mention the fact that my wife is on Docomo and that will just make the process easier.
MWAHAHAH! GIANT PHONE GET!

Edit:
Honestly is it that much bigger than some of the normal blackberry phones? My mom always rocked a pretty huge blackberry.
It just seems like a non-issue to me. Maybe GAF stands for Girly Appendage Federation?

Why don't you give a shot thinking about how applications could be bettered with such a functionality, instead of poo-pooing it?

I mean in games, full vision immersion is pretty obvious. And if limited screen space weren't an issue, then it's strange to see productivity increases resulting from offices that use multiple monitors.

Even in a very simple sense, if we only use the increased real estate for mundane things, it's still a pretty good improvement.

iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Titan and the Galaxy Note.

I can understand the appeal but I personally wouldn't use something of that size in public, less because I think it looks silly and more because I live in a developing country where smartphones are just starting to catch on and anything of that size would draw too much unwanted attention here. #developingworldproblems

That doesn't look too big at all.

But you're not just suggesting improved screen real estate. You're suggesting user interfaces that you interact with by rotating your entire body and that use complicated 3D space effects that are more easily accommodated using 2D space effects.

I agree that it would be interesting to see what could be done with it, though.

You have a neck right?

Are you sitting at your desk now? Have a look around. Did that seem natural?

Why would looking around in 3D digital space feel significantly more unnatural than that?

My initial point was that user interfaces wouldn't be chained to a screen anymore. And that in itself would allow for not only an interesting, but revolutionary improvement in the way we use computing applications.

I don't know how much more revolutionary you'd want an advancement to be... but it seems to me like a bigger advancement than touch devices were... and that was pretty great when that came out in 2007 in the iPhone.

The marketing push behind the Note has been pretty heavy, for what it's worth. In my mall there has been a demo kiosk set up with reps showing off the phone and the features with tons of space for people to play with them.

Just like the original Droid before it, I think Android phones can do well in the mainstream when they are actually heavily marketed. Despite being the flagship Android phone, the Galaxy Nexus is essentially non-existent to the public.

My personal opinion is that the Note is a crazy behemoth of a phone that I'd never consider (partially because it's still Android, partially because I don't want a crazy huge phone)...but even I can acknowledge that there are probably consumers out there who want crazy huge phones with a stylus. It seems like there's some market for it.

At least it's a different take on things, and that much I appreciate. Not for me, regardless.

I think the point of this proven adoption by lots of regular diverse folks shows that it's not "crazy huge".

I have tried it, granted not for a full day, but when you put it in your pocket, you can seemingly never forget its there.

Sure it fits, but you are always sort of.... 'aware' that its in your pocket. Its hard to explain, but its just big enough to not just be there, without BEING there.

I remember when I first learned of the Note. I was specifically searching on Google for the Android phone with the largest screen. I found out that phones like the SGS II had a large screen, but not much larger than the Evo. I learned about the Note and how it only recently came out in Europe.

Ever since then, I've been very interested in it. I am very glad to see the phone sold well, and I'm hoping it'll lead to many imitations.

I'd still call it crazy huge...it just seems like there's a market for "crazy huge" out there that's probably bigger than I would have thought.

Doesn't change that it's still crazy huge!

People used to say the similar things about 4'3 inch screens. People will get used to it.

When you say it's crazy huge, it makes it sound unusably large.

The millions of satisfied customers prove contrary to that point.

Hell, some people use their goddamn proper tablets as phones. 7-10" tablets.

Ok, I get that. But yeah, *that* is crazy huge as far as a phone goes. But it floats the boat for some people.

The note on the otherhand is huge. But not crazily so. But ok, I get it. You'd never use it because it's way bigger than your mind can wrap around... I just think that by the sheer fact that so many people are happy to carry it around as a phone kind of proves the point it's not 'crazy' huge... just huge!

Impressive, both for Samsung and for the type of device, expected that it still hasn't gotten ICS yet tho :lol

Wonder how much an iPhone/iPad hybrid of the same size would sell

5.3 is big enough to be a different scenario to 4.3 man. The only thing here is its just interesting to see how many folks this device caters too. Apparently theres a sizable market that likes/wants this kind of phone. Its nice that there is the option.

These numbers also certainly assures that this will become a yearly line for Samsung now that it has succeeded.

Yep, and if the next iPhone isn't in the vicinity of 4.5 inches, I won't be buying it. Reading on my iPhone 4 sucks, browsing sucks, gaming is pretty terrible unless it's a word game that doesn't require precision. At this point, I'd rather carry an iPad with me than my iPhone, which I may end up doing when my contract ends in a few months. I've found that having a smartphone whose screen is too small to be of much use to me is a huge waste of money. A prepaid cell plus an iPad is probably my next route unless Windows Phone 8 is good.

And probably HTC and Motorola as well.

I think the Galaxy Nexus is just about the maximum size screen I'd think of owning, it's pushing it really at 4.65", but the resolution easily makes up for it. I went back and played with a 3.5" screen device the other day and everything on the screen just felt so cramped. No room to breath.

Yea. It's nice to have options.

I'd like to try the note. 4.3 is my preferred screen size, though I have big hands and more screen real estate is always welcome.

Smaller phones are fine but half the time their size is a hindrance. I'm glad to see a market for larger phones emerge despite the clamoring of know-nothing armchair designers.

To be fair, if he was still alive, Steve Jobs would swear up and down until he was blue in the face that a 5.3" screen on a phone would be "a piece of shit."
