If the GTX 680 were the real 680, it probably would be something like around 40% faster than a 7970. 50% is probably stretching it.

nVidia pretty clearly just rebranded a midrange card to the 680 since the 7970 didn't set the bar very high. It's not really fanboyish to say that - it's just the truth.

That isn't what this guy was saying. "Ifs" don't count. He was saying Kepler was going to smash 7970 and be 50% faster at release, if not more.

What's odd to me is that despite not much changing (other than the high-end), prices are dropping on 570's and 580's like a damn rock, which is weird considering they're now near mid-range pricing yet they offer high-end performance. I have seen GTX 570's going for $160-200.

It's really one of the reasons I haven't sold my Lightning Xtreme 580s. Wouldn't get near what I paid for them ($600 a piece) and despite the 680 and 7970 being out...it still is a high end card.

There really is no point, other than less power consumption and early TXAA support... and perhaps microstutter/SLI compatibility issues if you're running SLI. It is a tough debate for me, whether to go 680 single or take my mobo to Microcenter, get the money back for it (thanks to warranty) and upgrade to the Z68 V or V Pro and go SLI 2.56 GB GTX 570's.

Plus I'm really, really hating the overclocking on the 680's. Nvidia has thrown a big wrench into overclocking for the sake of power efficiency... and I also think to lock down OC'ing so that people have to buy 'factory OC'd' or 'unlocked' cards. For an extra $50-100 premium, of course. I feel like a lot of people are missing this.

Not a good sign when the BIOSes are digitally signed and locked.

I really think you should give SLI a try...I think you'd be surprised. I have run into very little issues with my setup. You said you can get 570s for cheap, so why not
 
Sucks that there's stock issues for some. They seem quite readily available from the usual sites here in the UK. I'm still on the fence however.

Preaching to the choir man. I'm trying to sell my GTX 580 1.5 GB for $300 and am getting no bites. I refuse to buy the 680 until it's gone (and I've had the thing in my cart on newegg each time it's been in stock!).

The other option is to wait for the EVGA GTX 580 I have to drop in price sufficiently (still going for over $400) to do an SLI setup, but then I'd have to replace the power supply in my rig (sitting a 750watt) and I've little interest in going that route.

Maybe I will. But it really is overkill. Everything performs beautifully with one card, but I feel spoiled and entitled, like I should be downsampling everything from 1440p to 1080p AND running 8x SGSSAA.

Same for me....don't know why BoobyPhys has such a hate for SLI...I been running SLI for over 1.5 years and with little to no problems. The only recent one was with Alan Wake, but that got patched up and now is fine. Granted, a one GPU solution is always going to be the best way to go, but when you can SLI for the time I have and really not have many issues it seems like a no brainer for those that want alot more power, but without having to upgrade to the newest/best.

Speaking of new...UPS just delivered my 680's as I was typing this. They usually are NEVER here before 5:30pm (it is 3:25pm now). My plans were to clean up, remove my old cards and clean out my case and dust filters...then just pop them in...guess I will be busy for the next few hours now.

Also that Red Screen of Death is interesting. I think I will test each card on it's own first before going straight to SLI...I did comb through eVGA and not one user there is reporting the issue so perhaps this is very isolated...but a quick RMA and being a eVGA fan, they are very fast in replacing the card.

I guess the same reason I dislike SLI is the same reason I dislike heavy cars with tons of power and prefer lightweight cars with moderate power: more is not always better. Efficiency is key to me, especially when it comes to cost, reliability, and energy.

Also, microstutter and more input lag = big no no to me. I would hate to go SLI and boom, there's DAT MICROSTUTTER.

Congrats on your 680's btw! Can't wait to hear your impressions of them.

You know, I have heard you mention and others mention Microstutter and input lag, but I have never experienced that. I have heard it is more noticeable at lower fps and or lower resolutions, but I pretty much can play anything at max settings at 1080p and never encountered microstutter before. Smokey can vouch for this as well as he has been SLI'ing as long as me and we have almost the exact same rigs and I dont think I have ever heard him say he had microstutter before.

Have you ever tried SLI? What card are you currently using?

I have not played with SLI since the 8800 GT/9800 GTX era, in '08 when I used to build gaming PC's for Digital Storm. Back then it wasn't great. I'm using a GTX 570 2.56 GB VRAM right now. I have another one on the way that I bought 2 days ago.

Wait so after all that you just ordered another one to go SLI? lol.... I think you will be happy with it. Like I said, I originally SLI'd 2x460's, then 2x480's, 2x580's, 2x580 Classified and never had issues with microstutter. I am sure you will be good and will enjoy the extra power.

Nah, I ordered it for a friend but idk if he'll actually pick it up and use it. What's weird about microstutter is that it doesn't seem conclusive as to what causes it or even how to fix it in every case. I'm still debating, I'll probably end up backing out and not spending the extra money lol.

Yeah man, it was WEAK back then. We built tons of 9800GX2 rigs, some in SLI for Quad-SLI... those were a bitch to get working correctly most of the time because SLI was so finicky, especially with 4 GPU's running on two PCB's LOL. And fuck Digital Storm, never ever order a gaming rig from them. :P

I'm in your situation with a twin frozr 1.5 (god this is the most first world shit ever) anyway, why not just wait a little longer to see what the GK110 is like? I get the temptation, as 580 owner, I do need more power. I certainly won't be getting a 2gb 680 even if I did break down. I bought 580 in August, so that does factor in.

Personally I will wait to see what the "equivalent" to my current card offers, GK110 iirc, and even if it costs a couple hundred more than I paid for my 580, I won't have to fuck with sli. The hard part is that the 680 has difference in performance I'm wanting at this point.
 
Crap, I was reading about SLI and Crossfire benches and somehow I stumbled upon an NCIX.ca deal for a Sapphire 5850 for $99. Clearing out stock.. that is going to add a tremendous amount of performance to my existing setup of one ol' 5850. Scaling and performance has increased a lot since the reviews as well.
 
Yeah, gone just like that. It isn't even listed on NCIX anymore. Dang I really lucked in didn't I? I just got an awesome boost for $99. :S

EDIT: Snap.. probably should have bought 2 @$99. Could have given one to my bro or gone trifire, but I doubt there's a huge performance benefit there.

EDIT: Crap.. just read a few trifire 5850 reviews and the scaling is still really good. Oh well, that would have been a lot of juice for that amount of power though (~450w under load without overclock lol).

I think microstutter is overrated, at least for me. I went from two 6970's to a gtx 680 and the single gpu gameplay experience isn't that much more different than my previous 6970's. If anything, I have decreased performance now. When microstutter does happen, yes, it's bad, but I rarely ever noticed it on my 6970's.

That's strange. I had a horrible experience with my 6970 CFX setup. And I doubt you're seeing that much decreased performance. I went 580 SLI to 7970 single card and it was a very similar "feel". Granted, I OC'd the 7970 to the max...but still.

Just something to do...I love OCing and hardware stuff. Plus the resale is so great it's a worthwhile investment. I see about 80% returns on my current hardware. It's just a fun hobby. Some people have old cars or whatever...this is my money sink.

Oh here this goes again. As the benchmarks have proven, with how fast the ram is in these cards, the bandwidth has been a "non-issue". This has been repeated several times. Also, all these benches and tests have been done on the 1st driver release...we all know how this works...every driver going forward is going to add something, make things better as the drivers mature.

Yeah, for the most part, I was very happy with my crossfired 6970's. Great scaling, very little microstutter that I noticed. But I wanted to try out Nvidia and see for myself if their drivers were really that much better and I wanted to game with a single gpu to see what the differences were between that and multiple gpu's. So far, gameplay experience isn't that much different. The decreased performance on the gtx 680 isn't a lot; in fact, the gtx 680 is better in some cases but overall, there is a slight drop in performance.

In 3-4 years he will have a 4 WAY Sli setup of that one Single GPU you will have. It seems that is how sketch rolls. For the record..if 3xSLI equals a 13" e-peen, then 4xSLI is going to give him 17.5" e-peen....give or take a little (scaling). lmao

No worries man. I think alot of people when the look at a spec sheet and they see the previous gen cards with 384bit vs. 256bit for the new thing it is almost logical to think..WTF??? It certainly happened to me when I first read about the specs.

LOL @ the scaling. Fuck it, 1-2 cards is more than enough for me. Depreciation/diminishing returns and all that.

Sketch is the fat rich kid on the block who got a jetski for his birthday instead of a bicycle. :( To be honest though, if I had the money/shit was free, I'd rock GTX 680's in SLI. I'd love to have the ability to play with hardware like that like it ain't no thang.

Can we put some of this in perspective here lol? I'm having trouble comprehending what you could do with this setup.

Just to set a baseline, what do you need to play BF3/Ultra in stereo surround at 60 fps (on 3 1080p 120hz 3D monitors)

What about BF3/Ultra 1080p60 in 3D on a single monitor?
