As In clean the hard drive? You'll want to probably encrypt all your files, then use a tool to overwrite all your blocks of memory multiple times. After that put on a fresh install for the person that will be getting the laptop.

Yup clean, though I don't really have much in the way of files I need to even save tbh. Appreciate the info.

How long should i wait before other manufacturers begin to realese 640m notebooks?

I was about to buy something with the 540m, but now it would be a waste of money, considering the x2 performance gain of the 640m for the same price.

Hard to say. An Nvidia 600 series NDA ends sometime next week, so hopefully we get more official sources then; time of availability all depends on whether the notebook manufacturer decides to wait for Intel's Ivy Bridge. So machines will either go on sale within the next week or so, with Sandy Bridge, or sometime in April, with Ivy.

I can understand how you're stuck in an awkward position.
I need to get a new laptop because this one keeps acting up. It gets a blue screen every time the wireless adapter connects to the router (which I avoid by leaving it on all the time and never shutting down or sleeping), and YouTube videos randomly freeze everything except the mouse, which I can only unfreeze by restarting or blindly deleting process in Task Manager until I can see the effects onscreen.

More importantly, I can't play Minecraft very well, which is pretty irritating. I want to play in a silky smooth world of blocks. And I just bought Amnesia on Amazon which I probably won't be able to enjoy on this when the fan runs loudly at full power while doing anything intense as watching videos, and the bottom gets super hot because that's where the air vents are located (why?).

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any laptops capable of not being loud, scalding to the touch, prone to errors, and able to display decent graphics, for around $500. I can probably go more if I have to, but I'd rather not burn through my entire bank account all at once. I'm not trying to play Cyrsis 3 or whatever on max settings, but it would be nice to be able to see actual lighting and shadow effects when playing F.E.A.R., or mine ores at greater than 10 FPS. Or should I be looking at desktops?
Gaming notebooks are about necessity or luxury. If you don't absolutely need/want your platform to be mobile, go desktop.
Wasn't sure where to ask this but anyone have a guide on how to wipe a laptop for selling? Google comes up with stuff that's pretty old. It's an asus g73jh and didnt come up with a windows install disc. Thanks for any help!

Edit - also its too damn big for taking on the road which is the main reason I'm selling it.

You could download a Windows ISO, burn it to disc, then restart and run it. You will receive the option to format the drives after a couple clicks.

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on this:

for $1179. They ship mid-April but they give you $50 off for waiting because they're backordered. You can upgrade the processor to a i7-2670QM clocked at 2.2 for $70, but with the $50 off, it's a $20 upgrade. Actually, you can upgrade and customize everything about the system, if you want.

I'm wondering if you can overclock 2670QM. They offer higher clock speeds in the same casing, so I'm assuming it would be safe. It also has that "turbo boost" function and i'm wondering if that can screw with overclocking at all.

Those parts are just placeholders. The prices will change soon, when the 600Ms are added. Plus I hear they aren't shipping until mid-April, waiting for Sandy Bridge.

Oo glad i found this thread. I really want a gaming laptop to play dota 2 at work with. My addiction is out of control. They are so pricey though :(

Would an average desktop be more powerful than a laptop in the same price range? I don't really need to move around, it would just be nice, but if I could get a better desktop for a similar price, that might be a better deal.

when's alienware gonna announce the m14xr2?
No one I know can tell me what Dell is doing right now. They are likely waiting for the delayed Ivy Bridge, like everyone else.

Not sure how I should take this...are you saying they're refreshing the line and the prices will go up?

It's no secret that the 670M (rebranded 570M) is coming to the 8171, 8151 and 8131 with the 675M (rebranded 580M) just to the 8151 and 8171. They are also built with the latest chipset, which is compatible with the upcoming Ivy Bridge CPUs.

I've been told that if you order now, they will not charge you more, even if the price increases. But, what you need to confirm, is whether your price is locked regardless of whatever parts they refresh with, or just what's on display right now.

I know for a fact that they will ship you a machine with the currently offered components, if the chassis becomes available before the next-gen parts do. My best advice is that you should not pre-order now unless you want the 560M.

Notebook gaming is 2-3x the price for half of the performance, sometimes even one-third. The ratio is heavily imbalance, when compared to what you can do with a desktop with the same amount of money. There's simply no comparison.

ok, so i'm assuming this will be an upgrade worth waiting for. I probably won't order until the beginning of April...think they'll have more info up by then?

Just waiting for the m17x r4.

If you guys haven't noticed, in the DELL Alienware website, under the m17x customize page they dropped the GTX 580m from the selection, anyone know why?

That is a safe bet.

They're busy reflashing all of them into GTX 675Ms.

btw, an insider has leaked that the M17x r4 will have these GPU options: GTX 660M, GTX 675M, and AMD 7970M.

Is it possible to buy a higher end laptop with a lower resolution screen (lower than 1920x~)? I don't mind having a 720p screen if it means a big jump in performance.

The Alienware M17x R4 comes default with a 1600x900 LCD, and the Best Buy versions of the Asus G7x/G5x series usually come with cheap 900p screens as well.

Those are the only options I know of, if we're talking machines which come with GPUs like the GTX 560M and higher.

If the new GT 640M is fast enough for you, I'm sure many machines will be coming with 1368x768 screens, which is a good res for it.

The 675M is literally a renamed GTX 580M; the 7970M, while unannounced, will be coming from either the 7870 or 7850, and won't require much of a downclock to fit the high-end gaming notebook TDP envelop.

Expect the 7970M to lead by 40% or more.

So I waited a week. Can you tell me what to buy now? I'd love to magically get a laptop for under $800 that can play everything max settings, but if it's "worth it" I would be willing to spend $1500-2000 possibly, although highly unlikely.

So let's say $800-1200.

I'm currently looking at two notebook options.

HP Pavilion dv6-6b41ed

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/296178/hp-pavilion-dv6-6b41ed.html#tab:prices

Asus N55SF-S1366V
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/295244/asus-n55sf-s1366v.html

Of the two the Asus seems to have the best specs. Sadly I'm not entirely sold on the design (especially the keyboard). The HP on the other hand has a rather slick design. The video cards appear to be interchangeable, but sadly the HP is bottlenecked by a 5400 rpm HDD. Of course swapping out the HDD for a 7200RPM version is possible, but that would cost me an additional €80-100, and at around €900 I'm already stretching my budget.

What would be your recommendation GAF?
Would it be worth it to wait it out another month for the 640m releases? I really like the N53 Asus design which currently hold a 540m videocard and costs around €800. If that card would get replaced with a 640m I'd definitely be interested. That said, my PC is dying and I'm not the most patient man. So by the end of April I want to own a notebook.

Not sure if posted already but :

The review !

The Verge said:
If you're seriously considering the Ultra M3, though, I'm guessing you've got games on the brain. While I'm afraid even the highest-specced Ultra M3 can't truly run Battlefield 3 at ultra settings and maintain a playable framerate — I averaged 23.37 frames per second in my benchmark run, which is quite low for a fast-paced shooting game — it is most definitely playable at medium settings, where I managed to keep the framerate in the high 30s and low 40s, and you can even bump it up to high settings if you're willing to tolerate slowdown during firefights. To put things in perspective, Battlefield 3 is probably one of the most graphically intensive games on PC, and to see it even run at medium on a laptop this thin is something special.
1366 x 768 resolution aside, these are impressive scores

Older games, like my benchmark favorite Just Cause 2, can run at maximum settings at up to 50FPS, and even add some anti-aliasing to smooth out the jagged edges without suffering greatly. For comparison, most other ultrabooks we tested could barely break 10FPS at the same level of detail. Skyrim, meanwhile, was nice and playable at high settings, varying between roughly 30FPS and 50FPS depending on the action.

That is real good. I would still wait for an ultrabook with the 650M though, or wait for the first reviews of upcoming AMD's ultrathins.

Well nothing new to report, at all. Intel delaying Ivy Bridge, to sell more Sandy Bridge, essentially put the entire industry on hold. Nothing is coming out until the end of April, so if you really need something now, we're going to have to do it with what's currently available.

I'm currently looking at two notebook options.

Well I'd consider design flaws harder to get over than a slower HDD, because one of those you can do something about, and the other you have to stare at and interact with for the entire life of the machine.

How does that compare to the Alienware m11x R3?
Just speaking of GPUs, the 640M is looking like 2.25x the 540M. It's just around the GTX 460M's speed.

It's pretty much a lock that we'll see the 640M or 650M in the next M11x as well.

So now that I have the HP dv6 with an i7 and Radeon 6770m, I was wondering how much should I expect from it going forward. Is it going to obsolete in a year? two years? three?

Mind you, i'm playing on 720p. I really don't care about maxing everything out (i'm used to the 360 so everything looks better anyway, Skyrim and Battlefield 3 run perfectly adequate to me) but I want games to run smoothly and not look like total shit. I just don't want to find myself not being able to run any game two years from now :(

Tell me the hard truth though

Need a little help. My teenage boys have netbooks that have seen better days. We want to step them up to laptops, primarily for schoolwork, but let's face it, gaming will be a priority as well. I suspect that they'll continue to use the 360 for their FPS fix, but they'll want to play Starcraft II and Diablo III.

So is there a laptop out there, under $500, that would allow them to play those? Will prices be coming down once this Ivy Bridge thing hits?

any amd a8 (or even an a6) based laptop should be acceptable. i got my daughter an a8-based laptop from hp for $500 and it runs titan quest and the diablo 3 beta (on moderate settings) well. the a8 has an integrated radeon 6620 solution.

The 6770M is just over the speed of the desktop 9800 GT. At 720p, you still 2 years of good gaming to get out of it, before you really have to consider setting the majority of things to Low.

Do the kepler mobile graphic cards feature TXAA like the desktop ones?

High quality AA at the performance cost of only 2xMSAA may be really useful in laptop gaming.

That's pretty good, especially considering I have a hefty backlog anyway!
Thanks

Yes, the GT 640M, 650M, and GTX 660M will have the Kepler exclusive TXAA available.

Yeah, I wouldn't lose any sleep until the next Xbox and PS4 come out.

I bought this at the Microsoft Store. I got $200 off (which went to insurance/warranty), replace the hard drive with an SSD. I also received Microsoft Office University for free. All of it for about $1600 or so. Pretty good or was I ripped off?

I'm not paying over $1.2k if it gets me less than a GTX 570M or 6990M. Your view may differ.

Which SSD did you go for though?

C&C Generals Zero Hour on my Acer 5750G.. wondering is there anyway to play it wide screen.. maybe a software or something?

Here.

I Googled it.

Laptop-gaf, I'm planning to replace a cracked laptop screen do I have to buy one that is specifically made for that laptop or will any same size screen do?

Hello friendly chaps.

I dont really feel like putting in much effort to a search, i got a bonus last night so figured id rather impulse buy a laptop.. than spend it on bills as the month goes on.

NzBJh.png

is the graphics card better enough to warrant it? I dont get graphics card naming conventions.. they seem to go down or up or i dont know

I was just after a quick gauge out of these two if theyre ok? I'm not a high end gamer, i put games on low settings most of the time anyway! but i want it to be a bit future proof.

and of the above two is there much difference? because the store near me has the one on the right in, but the one on the left would take a few weeks to get in.

If I were you I'll wait for the one on the left since both are basically at the same price, but I wouldn't say that neither of those is future proof. the 630is just barely better.
You can compare here

Same size will do. Just make sure the cable connector on the screen is on the same side as your laptop's.

The 630M will either be the same exact graphics card, just rebranded, or a lower power consuming version of the 540M. Neither of those is worth waiting for, if you want it now.

In what country are you?

Glad I've hold out on purchasing a Laptop just yet.
A photo of the new Dell XPS 15 just appeared and it looks outstanding.

9YuCH.jpg

Love the new design and it will have the option for a Nvidia GeForce 640M, i7-3612-quadcore, up to 16GB ddr3, a 1980x1080 matt screen behind gorilla glass as well a 1TB HDD or up to 512GB SSD. Depending on the costs I will probably end up going with the 640m, i7, 8GB ddr3 and a 256GB SSD.

wow, a black macbook @_@, i think they are copying razer copying apple.

It's about time someone went for the black Macbook styling. That's a cute machine.

Release date?

Can anyone comment on this laptop? Worth a purchase? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BY57Y2/?tag=neogaf0e-20 or I'm really just try to find a nice gaming laptop for under $1000 if anyone has recommendations
If you must buy now, I'd rather see you spend $759 on this Acer. If you don't care about the quad core, you could even drop down to $649 for this Asus.

Hi Gaf, my brother is looking for a new laptop. He is thinking of a range between $600-800, Canadian. He wants something that is very reliable, his last computer was really bad. It was a dell that never seemed to work properly, the screen hinges even broke off. I myself have a Dell and have no complaints but he doesn't want to go back.

He doesn't do any gaming on it, mostly just internet surfing and school related things. I figure anything he gets in that price range will probably work for him, its more of a matter of reliability.

Does anyone know what companies have better reliability records? And who to stay away from.

probably not, but the ability to do so couldn't hurt as long as its within the price range.
I like this Asus. It's very highly reviewed, and I've linked two versions, one with a dedicated GPU and the other without.

One thing I don't like is the resolution on that. I program and low res sucks for programming :/

I completely missed the fact that the $899 machine has a 1080p display. That is a huge advantage. I would choose the one you linked, based on that factor.
