Ninja Gaiden II: The Official GAF Thread of Chaos

Fuck NG3, I'm hiding out here

Reinstalling NG2 on my new 360 now, along with DMC4 and Bayonetta

Need to cleanse my palate after that awful taste

You mean the first or the second Volf battle? in the first one you don't need the UT at all (just dodge his attack and use XXY), in the second he can block it but he won't always do it and you should at least kill some centaurs and get essence for another UT. Also, piercing void ninpo is your friend (if you upgraded it).

The first one.

I have not played NG3, but I can't help but notice a lot of people disliking it. Can someone give me a summary on what went wrong with NG3??

The first one,

Ok, the first one is easy even on MN (unlike the rest of the chapter):

- dash jump away from him and he will do his charge move
- dash to the left/right to avoid his attack and do a quick XXY with the lunar (any other quick combo is fine, but the lunar is the best for this fight)
- dash jump away and repeat

as long as you keep running away, he'll do nothing but charge attacks and sometimes the scythe UT (you can dodge it with dashes)

I got past the part I wa stuck on last night. I had not realized that there was a grains of life on one of the little islands, so I grabbed that and then used the scythe 4 triangle attack. It still took me a ton of tries but I finally got it done. I did the Volf fight right afterwards 1st try. I am really hopeful that I will be able to finish off master ninja now.

Gutted Sigma 2 has reduced gore, but it's my only option being a PS3 gamer.

Don't buy into the artistic reasons, seems simply to get the frame rate stable and the PS3 version to 720p.

I know the gameplay is what counts so I'm happily playing through it, GoW 3 has simple spoiled me with gore that is all :P

I'll try that strategy for MN. I used my DS on Mentor. Worked, but I wasted all my ninpo.

You're missing out. NG II is the original, unaltered vision, albeit it unpolished as holy hell.

NG3 has made me appreciate the art, bosses, and set pieces in this game even more now after having to experience the generic looking stuff in 3. There was litterally nothing memorable in that game.

NG2 has Bad Art,™ but it's still art! Silly and juvenile, but still awesome and super creative in an "Extreme Power Rangers" kind of way. Unlike NG3 you can tell the designers loved what they were doing and really thought they were creating something totally badass.

NG3 has nothing. It's just bland, homogeneous sludge created by soulless automatons without ambition or drive.

I haven't even played NG3 and it still makes me appreciate NG2 more. Can't say I've ever had that happen before.

NG3 is like a Pizza Hot Pocket. It's a odd, mishmash of reheated material that kinda sorta taste like the real thing, but after eating it you just feel unfulfilled and kinda disgusted, and wish you had just ate the real thing instead.

Over the past few months I've been replaying this. Just pick up a lever here and there. Still so fun. It's so fast, so brutal. You feel like a badass Ninja. Every weapon is great, Kusarigama and the Tonfas are my favorite. This and Bayonetta are 1a/1b in the genre.

My Sigma 2 copy arrived yesterday. Never finished the 360 game and that was like 4 years ago. Now, I don't know if it's because I haven't played an action game in a while, that I haven't really got on with other action games this gen (Bayonetta ridiculous story interludes that popped to frequently ruining the flow of the game, GOW III, action game for noobs, awful second half) but I am loving this so far. It still looks stunning to boot and the combat is so, so satisfying. It's all about the little attacks, dash, shuriken throw, attack, and getting those combos up.

My only beef so far is the missing blood, I'm sure they'll be nuisances that will appear later but for now the king is back :D

How bad is NG3, you ask? Bad enough that I re-bought NG2. $14 for a sealed copy. Not too shabby. Can't wait for this episode of Castle to end that I'm watching with my wife so I can boot it back up! I've been playing NG2 sigma on my PS3, and the colors look washed out. Maybe it's my TV settings? I remember NG2 vanilla having brighter visuals. I'll know for sure soon enough!

I must be in the minority, but I love the art of NG2. In fact I prefer the art of most Japanese games over western games. I think the reason is because their games look more imaginative/creative whereas western games try to be more realistic.

For some reason we're hearing more and more Japanese devs second guessing their games and trying to westernize. Forget that! They should focus on their strengths and what makes them different. There are certain genres they excel at and I think it's a shame so many fail to understand it.

<3

I think I'll boot up my copy shortly too.

Heh.

NG2 has always been amazing. Flawed, but so was the original NG.

It's just a shame Itagaki never got to make NG:Black 2.

In some ways, especially with the weapons and fighting engine, I love NG2 more than NG1.

There is no way I could call NG2 terrible or disappointing whatsoever - the game is amazing to me. The visuals especially when limbs go flying all over the place, blood strings and gushing and all, the body parts staying where they fell, even if you walked all the way to the end of the level and decided to go all the way to the beginning again. I'm talking about the 360 version of course.

Amazing action game, that only just got cemented by a certain other release that it will never, EVER be topped in my book, well, unless Itagaki's game somehow goes that route as well.

I must be in the minority, but I love the art of NG2.

Nope, you're not the only one. Some things really do look strange, but the whole package is one great atmospheric, mythical/modern ninja world to me.

And this is why i'm glad we've still got games like Binary Domain, Yakuza Dead Souls, Kid Icarus Uprising, and so forth.

I honestly see nothing wrong with the enemy design here...aside from NG1's Alma, which really didnt look too fiendish/looked like she had no emotion at all.

NG2 has the best combat ever. That alone, for me, puts it over NGB. Mastering (ish) this game was incredible. Goddamit, lets dig this thing out!

In a way, it's also why I had high hopes for NG3. We've already got Metroid, Castlevania, Devil May Cry, etc. being handed over to western devs. It really sucks and I don't want to see this keep happening.

you can add me to the list of champions if you like, my GT is quinntendopower

i still remember how unbelievably fucking frustrating the beginning of the 2nd level was on MNM.

This game is my favorite fighting action game, and I like it better than Bayonetta despite some of its flaws. My only problem with NG2 is the off-screen projectiles enemies ... I probably suck at this game now.

NGII holds up pretty well in my mind. It has some annoying spots, but for the most part it's good all around. Don't plan on playing 3 based on its reception.

I bought 3, played it for about 4 hours and saw zero boobs. I traded it in and got Sigma 2 and paid the rest on DMC HD Collection. I didn't find the gameplay to be outright appalling, but it wasn't Ninja Gaiden at all. Plus, why the hell did they think DLC weapons would work in a series that has always given you a shit ton of weapons?

Anyway, Sigma 2 has far better & more varied combat, way better boobs and zero sideways menus.

Agreed. Loved the bizarre designs, especially when they went crazy in creating the hell stages.

Some stages are quite good, I love the katana graveyard at the end of chapter 11, and the giant cave in chapter 10 was also pretty cool. Monster design, on the other hand, is downright awful. The purple demons, chainsaw zombies, gold dragons, giant fishes... it's so bad it's not even funny, just bad. The absolute worst are the pokemon dragons, though. They appear only once in the entire game and feel totally out of place even if nothing in the game actually makes sense. It's like even TN realized they were bad and decided to cut them from the game but forgot to delete one spawn point.

Itagaki actually made a comment on that in the making of documentary on NG2. He basically says he just accepted every design that they presented to him, because I guess at that point he just didn't give a shit anymore.

I so wish, somehow, somewhere, in some plane of existence that I would be able to enjoy it, NG2: Black gets made.
I really just wish the whole Tecmo thing hadn't happened. Who knows where this series would be right now. Oh the thoughts...

Oh you can add me to the Master Ninja list :)
I got 1250/1250 too!

I purchased NG black from Xbox live yesterday and still can't believe what an amazing game it is.
Runs and looks great on 360 also.

Is there a list of changes from NG2 to NGS2?

I just beat NG2 and feel like playing again, but the extras in NGS2 are very tempting...just not sure what they are :p

edit: or that ^^

From what I can remember:
SIGMA 2

ADDED
+ 3 New characters & 3 New Stages
+ CO-OP online
+ New Missions in Mission Mode
+ Runs at 720p
+ New Depth of Field during Obliteration Technique
+ Some Higher-Res Graphics
+ Added Enma's Fang and Howling Cannon Weapons
+ Enemies Have More Health
+ Added Chapter Challenge
+ Can Jiggle Breasts with Six-Axis

CHANGED
- Unlimited Projectiles
- Removed Blood
- Removed Windmill Shuriken
- Removed Incendiary Shuriken
- Removed Harpoon Gun
- Removed all Water Combat
- Removed Tests of Valor
- Removed Tunnel Worm & section
- Replaced Dual Armadillo Fight
- Removed UT Charge on Bow
- Cannot be knocked out of UT charge as easily
- Can only use Muramasa's shop to upgrade weapons once but does not require essence
- Five new bosses (Replaced 2 existing ones)
- Life of the Gods, Lives of a Thousand Gods, & Spirit of the Devil are automatically used when picked up and can not be held on to.
- Karma scoring is only gained through Chapter Challenge

Opinions vary but I personally find the three characters to be really enjoyable to play. Rachel is overpowers. Momiiji is unique, and Ayane is the female ninja. The games pace is slower, as it was meant to be more like NGS than NG2

Was looking forward to Momiiji's level. It's just the Tokyo level in reverse

Liked the design of the bosses but their attacks were just too few. Spamming the same move over and over

The Statue of Liberty boss too

Honestly, I haven't played NGS2 yet, but I automatically assume most of the new content is shit, because hayashit is a shit game designer, I wasn't a fan of some of the "new" shit that was added in NGS either! like the rachel levels.

I played it at a friend's house. didn't really care for it.

Damn dragons are raping me in Heart of Darkness.

I booted this up on my old xbox and found I got to chapter 12. Hella rusty and getting owned by the fire greater fiend guy.

I bought a transfer cable but it didn't work :(. I wonder if it's broke.
