Just for clarification - the Javik DLC for ME3 is ONLY Collector's Edition content and is not "Project 10 dollar".

The Online Pass only gives you access to the multiplayer mode. Non-CE users have to buy the DLC.

I wouldn't recommend that. While that document raises the valid issues it also nitpicks every single small detail, which makes it a very obnoxious read.

Yeah, while it's a pretty good write up of the broad ideas about that particularly theory there's a few parts that scrutinise some aspects a bit too much. Whether we like it or not some concessions to reality and plausibility are often made in fiction, especially in video games.

You can tear a lot of the Mass Effect series apart if you apply even a small amount of critical thinking, but you enjoy the story and the universe because you turn off the areas of your brain that wonder why: Sovereign lectures me evolution despite his betraying a fundamental ignorance on the subject; their interfaces and technology are basically like ours but with holograms; nearly all aliens are humanoid; reapers killing you to stop synthetics from killing you, every chick has the same massive child birthing hips, large breasts, and weighs 110lbs soaking wet; etc. I accepted that the story and the universe were mostly dumb (with a few high points) and expected the ending to be in the same vein. But it's so much worse than I had imagined.

I understand why people are upset: as dumb as the universe and writing can be, by giving us dialogue and plot options, we have created Shepards who are interesting and personal to us, and the ending shits on that. I know my Shepard would've never gone out the way she did. She might've refused to choose A, B, or C! Maybe we'd rather die fighting than take those 3 options? She certainly wouldn't have made her choice unless she had interrogated the
catalyst
to understand the implications of all the options (although I suppose the implication would be:
it's the same goddamn thing no matter what you choose!
).

I start talking about how it's basically a waste of time to apply logic to the Mass Effect games and I find myself writing a dissertation on why I hated the ending...

It is quite nitpicky i Admit. But it is by far the most eloquent form in which most if not all the complaints are raised. That's why I linked it. I think the document comes across better than the youtube videos addressing the ending.

It is also a small read, give how much fiction is in the game. Should take at most 10-15 mins, given reading speed.

It also points out that the issues that people have with the ending cannot be summarized into the "People want a happy ending", which is what most of the enthusiast media are trying to convey.

You also have to realize that the loudest complainers about the Mass Effect 3 ending have repeatedly said they want a happy ending. These are the people getting mocked in podcasts.

hopefully it ends, when the new ending comes out.

Hopefully it ends with BioWare being sold off for parts. The stuff the ex-BioWare people are cooking up are so much more interesting that the last three games they've shipped. BioWare has managed to strangle to death two properties with amazing potential. Seems they've all but admitted Dragon Age is dead. ME seems headed down the same path.

Thank God they can't ruin Baldur's Gate.

new character in Enhanced Edition. maybe he'll ruin it, hohoho

I haven't gotten to the ending of ME3 yet, and have heard it's BSG-like and will put a sour taste on my love of the series till this point... But the characters as a whole across the ME universe are ones that I've cared more about than any other series this gen. Maybe it's the fact that they carry across three games with significant dialog, or the choices that you make in game. But playing ME3 these past few weeks, it made me remember that one can still care about an ensemble cast of characters in a game.

You will be disappointed.

I wish I still felt like I even had my ensemble. That was my crew--we did a motherfucking suicide mission together. In ME3, I feel like I'm randomly bumping into them in line at Chick-Fil-A.

You must have picked the wrong crew to be friends with, heh. Don't tell me you're a fan of Jacob?

I liked how characters like
Tali and Mordin
not only come back, but you continue on to solve some pretty important shit with them. Their missions in ME3 made me appreciate ME2 more.

For some reason this didn't bother me that much.

From a gameplay standpoint it made sense, since there would be so many variations of the ending for ME2 that developing all those characters animations and such for the sequel would have been too "cost prohibitive".

Also if they are alive they are very integrated into the story, minus the fact that they are not playable.

The first point is a problem for me, and why I feel a little betrayed at how everything is playing out.

The second point is also a problem for me, because it's their way of just slicing through the Gordian knot they tied over the course of two games. Give those characters a nice cameo appearance and a heroic send-off. Job done.

Not saying I have a solution for those messy loose ends and myriad possibilities/combinations, or even that there could be one that satisfies me. But I was foolish enough to believe that one had been envisioned. So I'm willing to accept that much of my disillusionment is self-inflicted.

Some are dissapointed, others are not dissapointed. I am one of the ones that are not dissapointed by the ending and I don't think it was perfect but the outrage over it feels overblown.

I haven't listened to a player one podcast in months and need to start listening again, I still download the episodes just haven't got back to listening yet.

Loved Phil's rant about "Indie puzzle-platformers with a unique artstyle". Completely agreed as well.

I kill about five games a day. But it seems like that many get added, too. What's your name on there? I'll send you a game as soon as I kill some more tonight.

I totally agree with being tired of the indie puzzle platformer with unique art style.

In fact, I'm kind of totally tired of most indie games in general. They were neat at first, but for the most part, I get bored of the whole "do one thing really well" design. I need more depth in my games to hold my attention.

Maybe I just haven't been playing the right indie games though...

P3P is great. I hope to hear impressions for weeks to come.

EDIT: Next generation is incredibly scary for me. I am not looking forward to it at all. Based on the rumours, it sounds extremely anti-consumer. That and the added costs of development for a new generation at a time when developers are already struggling... it seems to be really bad.

That's my biggest concern. The only hope is developers streamlining the development process more and a larger embrace of middleware/engines.

Mike not watching Game of Thrones because it's a "fantasy" series is just so, so wrong. You literally have no idea what you're missing. :(

I'll try it. I have HBO Go. I can almost guarantee you it will bore me int self-harming. Just like Lord of the Rings.

I have a lot of TV/movie selections that other people LOOOoOOoOoove that I have absolutely no interest in ever seeing (or tried, but just couldn't get into). Genres I just have no interest in. One of them might be
The Wire
. Nothing wrong with not being into fantasy.

I thought Lord of the Rings was so boring I could barely keep my eyes open through each movie, but I love Game of Thrones.

You guys should have me on next week. I did radio commercials as a kid, and competed head-to-head against Thor Aackerlund in the Nintendo World Championships!

HBO's upcoming series, Veep, is much more my speed. Mostly because I think Armando Iannucci is a motherloving genius.

It's nothing like the frivolous fairy tale that is Lord of the Rings.

Let me put it this way - would you pass on The Witcher because you don't like fantasy? That's a much better comparison imo.

If it makes you feel any better, the tv show is far less ridiculously overwrought than the books. It's still absurd, pulpy nonsense that gets fairly nonsensical praise as some great achievement but if you pretend that te plot twists are surprising, it can be entertaining.

All in all though it's pretty rote fantasy.
