Game Informer May 2012 Cover revealed: Halo 4

Looking forward to seeing what 343 come up with, I think the series really needed some new blood as to me it was starting to get a little stale, as a multi-generational series it hasn't changed that much at all with Reach being the most different while being almost exactly the same.
The teaser trailer gives me hope I'm not going to feel like a pair of arms attached to a heavy camera with legs that can barely walk at a decent pace in Halo 4, and hopefully feel more like the Super Soldier of awesome I am suppose to be as seen in almost all the Halo Media besides the games.

I'm also not going to assume it is going to blow my mind graphically, like every Halo game before it, they look great, but never as fantastic as their pre-release media does, but then that goes for most games anyway.

Also, fingers crossed for a Halo Wars 2 :D

Will post the possibilities list

-The Didact and Prometheans (pretty much confirmed in CEA)
-The Flood (They are still alive)
-Forerunner machines (we are on a Forerunner planet after all)
-Precursors (
creators of all life in the universe also they are flood graveminds
)
-Ex Covenant (Some races might have joined us and some might want to kill us)

Not ok with Precursors description and fighting Elite zealots is confirmed.
Flood is not going away, I'll bet my ass on this, although major overhaul.

Forerunners, Didact, Prometheans...Sphinxes...I'm so ready. so very much.

There seems to be lots of misunderstanding on "hyping" from GI. Andy McNamara said absolutely nothing to hype up next cover story, and the other editor said "game from our next cover story looks so good my jaw is still on the floor making it difficult to walk" 3 WEEKS ago.

There was no mad hyping by McNamara or anyone from GI. And for those having hard time connecting beautiful graphics and Halo should listen to 343i podcast, they were very concentrated on making it clear that graphics look absolutely great. Anyway, Aegeis and that Ryan from OXM already said it looks much better than reach, so you naysayers just wait couple more days to see SP shots.

Impressions

Halo 4 looks much better than Reach. In person, seeing the engine run and watching match replays, it looks like they've created a global illumination system to go with their 720p, and the level of detail on models and environments looks considerably improved.

Words that left my mouth after our session: if you told me this was a next-gen Xbox game, I might believe you. It looks like a new engine for the first time since Halo 3.

I'm sure plenty of stuff in the game will be picked apart and derided as "last-gen." But it looked (and sounded - fuck, for reals, the sounds) amazing.

I will back this up. I was honestly stunned at just how much better it looks in motion than Reach.

It'll probably be the default gun once again. Ugh. I really hope Halo gets out of the 90's and allows us to hold LT to look down the sights.

Edit: And sprint that's always there.

Not really "the 90's" it's a design decision. Gears is the same way, as is Mass Effect.

ADS in Halo? Leave, leave now and never come back.

Thats like saying Counter Stike needs ADS for every gun.

I think my most damning feeling towards it was that it had no sense of identity to call its own. I'd use the word 'generic', but that feels be an understatement.

I'd use the word 'nonsense', but that feels be an understatement.

To be fair, as just a PC gamer at the time, I used to think so as well - and then I actually played it.

A magazine/online article teaser for an upcoming article where the game is one that i DON'T already know is coming....now that would make my jaw drop.

Have you even played Halo 3? It's the definitive "looks like ass" game. Jaggies everywhere in the sub HD mess. Shame they didn't use any MLAA or FXAA. That was Bungie's downfall. A real shame. I couldn't play the game because of how bad it looked. No thanks Bungie, I'll stick to KZ2, KZ3

Is this a troll post? When Halo 3 came out it looked pretty damn good. You couldn't play the game because of how it looked? "looks like ass"? So much hyperbole. The KZ games look great but halo is doing so much more with much more interesting physics. Plus I remember KZ 3 having pretty dramatic frame rate dips. To each his own, but damn, you're dramatic.

Tashi is joking :)

To be fair, it sounds like by the time he finally played it he had likely already played other games which had been influenced by it, which would make it seem more generic than it was in its day.

I wish I had a nickle for every time I've heard someone say "So after years of hearing about how awesome _________ is, I finally checked it out for myself the other day. Gotta say, I don't see why everyone think it's such a big deal." I'd have a bunch of nickles.

Game Informer covers literally NEVER measure up to the hype that they're given by the staff on Twitter. They invariably end up being a dudebro shooter or sequel to a mainstream, established franchise.

Fucking yawn.

Oh fuck! Do you realise what you have just done? Get out while you can I can hear them coming.

Have always been completely baffled over the popularity of the Halo franchise.

I love posts like this from people who can't understand why things are popular. Is it really that hard to understand? You may not like the fact that it has lots of fans, but I find it incredibly hard to believe you can't fathom how it could possibly be popular.

I have to admit that when I saw the tweet about this month's cover story, I didn't think it would be Halo 4 either. I think Halo games look great, but due to many factors, they aren't going to match the more linear games out there graphically. So I'm surprised that Halo 4 dropped jaws in the way he described. I don't even expect to see much in this cover story, and imagine all of the shots will be of the MP which don't match up to the SP. Hoping I'm wrong here, but it looks like MS is keeping the campaign secret until E3.

Still, the amount of ignorance and trolling in this thread is typical for a Halo related thread. Highly doubt we'd have such rubbish if the game was the Last of Us again or any other exclusive for that matter.

...and every fight. The framerate was never smooth during fights. Never. Halo 3 was way smoother than Halo Reach in this regard.

Actually according to the frame rate analysis, Reach doesn't drop any more often than Halo 3 did, but when it did drop, the frame rate would sometimes drop lower than the minimum frame rates seen in Halo 3 and ODST:

In comparison with Halo 3 and ODST, there's the sense that for the vast majority of the duration, Reach is the smoother game. While frame-rates in optimal conditions are identical, the new game's implementation of motion blur - both camera and per-object based - is markedly superior to what we saw in the old engine. Put simply, the game just looks that much more fluid in motion.

However, on the odd occasion where frame-rate drops, there's the definite sense that performance lags behind both Halo 3 and ODST at their worst. The question is why? Fill-rate is the likely culprit, as opposed to bandwidth or geometry concerns.

Right, and when games like Dishonored are getting revealed via cover no one give a damn and everyone cries "where is my sequel!" GI can't win, right?
