Game Informer May 2012 Cover revealed: Halo 4

Why not? It makes sense that there would be ADS, fuck "realistic" most weapons in halo have a scope anyway so what's the problem?

ADS in Halo would be huge risk and hindrance. It's sandbox levels/combat are not well suited for slowing down movement so you can aim and shoot one of the 20 enemies better.

So why is the AI in halo wars fully clothed and realistic looking but Cortana is a blue naked thing?
They can choose their own appearance.
How exactly would it stop being halo? Or is this some reverse troll?
What's not to get? Putting Iron Sights in Halo is like ONLY having Manual Shifting in Burnout.

It COMPLETELY changes the entire method of shooting. The flow of the game. The usefulness of weapons. You know....the entire sandbox.

You would think that a guy who hates on Capcom for completely changing Resident Evil into and action franchise would understand why Halo fans wouldn't want Halo's gameplay to be fundamentally changed.

Why not? It makes sense that there would be ADS, fuck "realistic" most weapons in halo have a scope anyway so what's the problem?

Actually it wouldn't. I believe the crosshair is part of the HUD on master chiefs helmet, he don't need no stinkin ads! The looks down the scopes when he needs zoom. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I definitely thought that was the explanation.

I gave a damn :(

Some of my favorite more recent covers have been that, South Park and the proper XCom game.

And mines has been this one and the AC3 cover. I understand being excited for new IPs and reboots of cult classics, but the meat of the gaming audience wants big news on beloved and wildly popular games. You've been rather reasonable in your distaste of the cover, but also somewhat misinformed. All signs pointed to the cover being Halo 4, and the impressions beforehand have been consistent with the few in-engine shots we have. (mostly that it looks better than Reach)

We have "ADS" weapons, The BR, DMR and the Carbine.

Having ADS an full auto weapons would be stupid, we have scoped weapons that actually need it.

I always find it odd how some say Halo is generic, while others call for it to play and look more like the sea of modern warfare roller-coaster style shooters we have today.

Frankly I'd rather see Halo 4 focus more on having large otherworldly locations, sandboxy play spaces, great combat and engaging enemy AI rather than taking the route of most other shooters these days.

What I don't get is if Halo is so generic, why is it there isn't any other shooter like it? A generic shooter should be easy to replicate but everything from the look and feel of Halo is unique to that series.

Yea, careful with the Halo nuts over on HaloGaf; change is not a word they want to hear in relation to the game (I happen to agree with them this time).
Change is fine. Just not changes that are detrimental to the goddam game. If was necessary in many maps in Halo 3 due to the low speed. We still aren't given all the new details regarding how sprint will work in H4, so that's undecided. Iron sights are never needed for a game like Halo. You can aim and shoot accurately without it and on the precision weapons a scope is provided.

I seriously don't get all the hate in here. For one thing, we all knew it would most likely be Halo 4, and another thing is it is hardly the only game getting sequels. This is the 4th main Halo game, well 5th if you count Reach. It is hardly milked dry as other have said, and those dissing the graphics...lets wait and see before we go there. I do agree, Halo 3 looked like ass.. But Reach didn't.

Anyways, Im excited.

The first Halo game to implement look down sights will be the first one I don't buy. Think through the implications of such a mechanic to Halo's gameplay. It would stop being Halo.

Well, ADS could just be a cosmetic thing that behaves just like other scopes in Halo, but I agree that Iron Sights, in their COD form, in Halo would not be great.

That seems hyperbolic, it would still have the same Halo style and art, just with a new feature.

And by different style, you mean very different gameplay. The ability to see the battlefield clearly when scoped and not have movement impaired while doing so is critical to what Halo is about.

Making it cosmetic would fix one half of the problem - movement - but leaves the screen filled with a gun rather than the battlefield. I maintain that would be a huge step backward for the gameplay.

I don't understand where it would fit on the controller, either.

Well said.

Thats why I said I agree with HaloGaf this time. Don't make me get into how I thoughtfully pointed out what I thought could be improved (i.e. jumping physics) and proceeded to get slammed by half of halogaf for thinking that a couple core things needed improvement.

The cover is not terrible, not the best work they have done. I think the Reach cover is still my favorite. Look forward to reading new details about the next installment of the franchise.

I'm for ADS in Halo. You basically ADS when you click to scope your dmr/br/sniper rifle/rockets/etc. The only difference would be staring through a scope as opposed to hard sights on an unscoped weapon. If they allow you to hip fire or ADS without penalizing hip fire accuracy, then why not? 343 would effectively broaden their game's audience by keeping the purists happy while allowing those accustomed to CoD and BF to use an aiming mechanic they are familiar and comfortable with.

You're a game designer in training, it seems.

'Having ADS in Halo wouldn't change a thing, obviously!'

You already have ADS on precision weapons, its called a 2x scope.

Halo's gameplay is rooted in combat clarity and fluidity. Aim down sights impacts both greatly.

A quick animation to look down your sights wouldn't impact any fluidity at all and it would increase accuracy. ADS for medium-long range enemies, spray/hip fire for close range enemies. Makes total sense to me.

I don't think it would be very different, you ads when you want to, hip fire when you want to.

Here is the thing, Halo is not and never should be like CoD or Battlefield, Halo is Halo, Battlefield is Battlefield and Call of Duty is Call of Duty.

And jetpacks (Tribes), sprinting (CoD), and Armor Lock (lolwtf)? Should Halo not have adopted any of those as well?

Halo combat relies heavily on visual clarity and small, quick movements while firing. The smartlink scope on precision weapon caters to that without sacrificing movement speed or screen space.

ADS, in nearly every current iteration, slows the player down to a crawl, and blocks significant portions of the screen with either the gun model or a shitty depth of field effect.

No thank you.

I for one would love iron sights added to Halo. MS needs to realize that CoD is king and it's not shameful to steal some ideas/features that would be clearly make the game better. I find it ironic that the Halo story is set so far in the future but the gameplay is so far stuck in the past.

Sorry about that, I was just trying to clarify that there was more information to come based on comments I read here that basically said the only news we had was the new look for Cortana.

We put Halo 4 on the cover because we believe people will be excited about the info inside.

So please, wait and see.

Can not wait to read it. Very hyped for Halo 4.

Jet packs work NOTHING like Tribes, I don't like the idea of sprinting as we should just have a higher default movement speed and we dont talk about armor lock here.

(Seriously, fuck armor lock)

I am ready, believe me. :P

Excited to see what you guys have.

“The game is looking really sharp and fairly far along, which is

always great to see this early. The reveal of [Yoink!] is going

to be the 'Holy sh--' moment. That's going to be the star of our

story, I think."

FUCKING DIDACT BABY.

Let's keep this train rolling.

343 must get rid of the jumping mechanic. It's just not practical for a soldier to jump around. CoD got this right: feet planted firmly on the ground, aim down the sights. It worked for colonial America, it'll work for a supersoldier.

Damn you! not this again! LMAO

This kid might have an easier time breaking the Tashi Ceiling with ADS. You can see why he wants it so much.

Dude ok. The joke gets old after a while.

And that's why the community has largely shunned Jetpacks and Armour Lock (neither of which seems to be making a return in Halo 4). Sprint alone doesn't break or change the game to the extent of Iron Sights.

And what's the deal with recharging shields? C'mon son.
