The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Hmm, I trust your opinion.

Maybe once it drops it price I'll give it a go. But, this quick look just isn't doing it for me.
it's only being sold from GS and Nintendo online store. Nintendo is making it very limited for NA so don't wait too long if you're on the fence. Check reviews too.

It's on the Wii. Slim pickings over there at the moment. If it were multiformat I don't think it'd get anywhere near the same attention.

While there is some truth to that and it has some fundamental problems, it is still a very good game. There are far worse games that get a ton more attention.

That, and it's also in a genre ("epic" console RPGs) that's sorely underrepresented this generation.

I disagree. Until my PS3 broke down a couple of months ago, I've owned every current generation platform, so I'm not limited in my options, and I really love Xenoblade Chronicles. I loved exploring the massive environments (and getting directly rewarded for doing so), I enjoyed the high degree of customization and options in the battle system, and the general premise of civilizations building up on the bodies of two titans is much more interesting that what I find in most games.

The game surely has some minor faults, but I have no problem calling it the best JRPG of the generation.

Yep, plus it's one of the only good JRPGs in a generation lacking of them, and the whole controversy with NoA not localizing it has given the game heaps of attention.

I've tried to understand the hype for Xenoblade repeatably, but I just don't get it.

It doesn't look that nice to me from an artstyle and graphics standpoint with jaggies galore, and the voice acting seems pretty embarrassingly cheesy.

What makes this game so special? I want to like this game since I've been waiting for a good JRPG this entire generation, but I just don't think this is it. Are we that starved for a decent one?

Well it isn't really a 'jrpg' IMO. More of a single player mmo design wise. A lot of great ease of use features and it's well made.

And if you want good jrpgs, there are at least a dozen stellar ones on ds and psp.

I can't imagine Xenoblade will ever drop in price. There just won't be enough copies of it in America to ever get that cheap.

I don't know why but I assumed the combat was turn based traditional JRPG combat. That combat system looks pretty terrible.

Well early game combat in RPGs pretty much always looks terrible.

I'd you like ff12 you will like this.

26 minutes for Xenoblade but 40+ minutes for games like Kinect Star Wars. Yeah I don't get it.

What utter nonsense. It has nothing to do with the Wii. Games like Xenoblade should be in the news for positive things more so than the Mass Effect crap that's been around for the past few months.

26 minutes is more than enough to see that xenoblade chronicles is one of the most interesting jrpgs to come out this gen. with star wars kinect, they're just giving people what they want: footage of them playing bad kinect games, just for the gifs. we actually need more!

Wouldn't you want to see less of a game you would actually play (because of story things) and more of a game you'll likely never buy (because it looks dumb/funny)?

They could have shown off the other systems. And Patrick could have actually known what he was talking about while playing it.

Nah I don't want them to play Kinect games. They're awful and I can tell they hate their lives while doing it. I'd rather them play a game they admire and are interested in.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a fairly complicated game, and if you accept that the GiantBomb staff are never going to play through it in its entirety, they did a good job of showing it off.

They recorded the entire Quick Look in Gaur Plains, even showing the sweeping zone establishment shots that you see when you first enter, highlighting one of the game's most impressive moments. He also brought up gems, fast travel, chain attacks, arts, the importance of positioning and threat management, the affinity trees, skill links, and more. Frankly, I can see people that don't play a lot of RPGs being a little overwhelmed after watching it.

The game's like 100 plus hours long, twenty more minutes wouldn't have spoiled anything. Plus they could've gotten to their third party member I think. Oh well, they had to get ready for PAX East, no biggie.

Also, regarding the combat, Patrick's mistake was that he didn't heal his partner at all. He's not used to MMO-style aggro management, of course, but that battle would've gone better if he'd let up a little on the damage-dealing abilities and healed his tank a bit more.

Also that giant thing got me out of nowhere the first time I saw it Gaur Plains, because I was panning the camera around and didn't see him walking up on me. He's one of the ones that will attack you on sight as well. Next thing I knew, I was in combat and people were dying.

Good quick look, Patrick showed off the game's systems pretty well.

I would be very interested in Xenoblade if I hadn't just recently bought Resonance of Fate and Devil Survivor 2. I don't have the time to play three 60+ hour JRPGs.

It's a shame they never did a quick look of RoF, if only for the Nolan North factor.

It looks interesting. Reminds me of FF12. Whereas FF12 was sparse on story and character interaction, this seems to have systems built around it. The visuals and art style don't do anything for me but wow...that music was really good. I do want to play this but I dont have the time to invest in a 100 hour game, and its probably too late to get it off GameStop. Plus, I don't know, the hype about this game has kind of turned me off it a bit. But maybe I'm just making excuses to myself about skipping it.

I just ordered Xenoblade Chronicles from ebgames.ca. I'm not in a hurry to play it, it's the same price to buy online and from brick & mortar, and I'm worried that this may become another Panzer Dragoon Saga--though not quite as rare, obviously.

Agro systems were (perfectly) implemented in FFXI, not FFXIII!

I've, sadly, yet to play Xenoblade Chronicles, but damn if that NPC wasn't using /ja Provoke <me>.

In fact, when they play a great game it normally really boring to watch and listen to.
Compare Story Hour to Arkham City, Story Hour wins hands down.

Yeah get back to me when games like Arkham City have Bombcrew cameos.
