Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I think it's just fair play, a lot of posters in this thread have had to deal with the on par bs, and now sony fans are understanding some of that pain, personally, I think the specs would be fine and the entire generation will come out better for it.

You'll be a bit happier too, as people won't be so down about the Wii U anymore, expectations of the other consoles are finally being curtailed a bit.

lol, i was just titillating Tom :)

I just wanna say that seeing is believing. Nintendo fooled me once with the Wii and as such i'm remaining very cautiously optimistic until E3. No bullshit. Competent online. Relevant third party support. The whole nine, man.

I'm fine with them taking great head developers and putting them on teams that are doing nothing... Looking at you Mr. Sega leading NST now. I hope I'm in for something great... (1080o, Wave Race, or even something new would be exciting from them)

The NST revival really interests me. Anyone here have any idea what they are working on? Surely they aren't working on Mario Calculator 2.

I saw someone on GAF suggest the Donkey Kong Country franchise was shifted there...

There have been rumors that Ninendo has been working on a realistic racing stimulator ever since the Original Wii was first heard about.

So ye...

I think it was relayed yesterday or before that a lot of indie developers were talking about the Wii U during PAX.

One of the title considered unofficially for the future Wii U digital distribution service is Hell Yeah !, a project from the little parisian studio Arkedo

Here's a link:

You'd think it would make a lot of sense for Nintendo to pick up Yu Suzuki, have him head NST or Monster and just give him the Wave Race license. But yeah, it's Nintendo, so it probably won't happen.

It would be funny if MS go crazy over top high end but focusing kinect and casuals games lol

I dunno. I think they'll keep-up the hardcore output, but they'll up their level of casual/non-gaming focus. If they do it at E3 or another similar event, we'll get a peek at some psyches. Some fans will begin to act like jealous siblings, upset that Daddy is paying too much attention to their baby sister, "Casualita."

You succumbed to the temptation :p
It was too good. And who knows? It may be possible. I'm incredibly skeptical of it happening, but thought that entertaining the possibility was fair game.

...

:D

I'm a huge fan of Yu Suzuki but, what I get from his interviews, is that he's really not interested in such projects anymore.

Posted this in the other thread, but it fits here aswell. USB2 will IMO be enough for WiiU:

20-25mb/sec on USB2 is enough people.

Still faster than Wiis and Xbox360s dvd drive and ps3s blu ray drive.

Ps3s Blu Ray drive is a 2x drive with 72mbit wich equals 9mbyte/sec

4x Blu ray drive is 144mbit and therefor 18mb/sec.

So an external hdd would have the 4.X speed of a blu ray drive.

No complains from my side...

Anything interesting going on in the area of compression technology?

An interesting but non related to the Wii U interview of Brian Fargo concerning the success of the Wasteland 2 kickstarting

I just hope this new approach of funding and developing games will be involved, at least through Nintendo Network, for the Wii U.

Kid Icarus Uprising was in its own kind a fanpressurestarting project, if a lot of gamers and members of media haven't insisted at every showrooms and conferences since many years to know if Nintendo will make something of this franchise, we certainly wouldn't have seen the release of this game.

How about a community funding/probe/feedback pool/board/poll page where we could fund a Nintendo revival of an old IP, a new and original one, etc ? It would be very interesting, fresh, trend-making, it could create and nurture-to-the-point-of-selling-the-project-through-retail new software, gamedesign ideas, intellectual proprieties, new universes/backgrounds, characters, in a more reactive and less financial-risky way.

I asked a few pages back what you all thought about the kickstarter concept, and if anyone saw it as being significant as related to releases on Nintendo's upcoming hardware. No real responses.

I'd be game to put-up some money for good Wii U games. If there are any that are particular favorite genres or historical or fictional settings with certain gameplay dynamics, I'd be willing to put-up a really good amount of money over the course of the generation. There are certain genres of gameplay that are historically under-served on Nintendo home consoles, and this would be a promising means of addressing those insufficiencies. Especially if developers offer great donation bonuses; I particularly like the "Give X Amount and we'll name an NPC after you!" offers.

So I'm reading something about Nintendo getting ready to announce a huge financial loss. I have a feeling we're going to hear some interesting news at the next Iwata investor's meeting about the Wii U lol.

All of this bad news can't be good for investors right now. Iwata may need to announce something news related on the 26th this month.

Yeah, there must be cool incentives for crowd-funding/kickstarting. In Project Cars for example, you can have opponents named after you, advertisements room reserved for you, etc.

And of course, you must have your name in the credits.

I've been out of town for six weeks. Did I miss anything?

Sony and MS execs put on fake moustaches and posed as anonymous devs claiming WiiU can't keep up with PS360. This is now widely accepted as fact.

OS/apps reserved RAM in WiiU is at least 512MB or more, for the time being (Ideaman).

Gearbox seems to be rather excited.

Vigil has now put out 3 statements. Two of them being WiiU > PS360. One says it's on par. Of course the latter is the only one given any credence.

Former Sega hotshot now working for Nintendo.

Mock if old:
ForgetTheBox said:
Rumor: Wii U’s Total Bill of Materials Estimated at $180

(...)
The source goes on to say that Nintendo is assessing the overall market and finalizing costs to determine the price for the Wii U, but it will be no less than $300 retail price when it launches.
(...)
“Nintendo chose an economical GPU and CPU that could keep up with the performance of today’s current consoles, but keep hardware costs down to maximize profits. Nintendo got a bargain price on the custom GPU and CPU that the Wii U uses. There is a bigger focus on downloadable content, applications, video content, digital distribution, and services to create a stream of revenue. Investors will be ecstatic with the news.”

Doesn't sound promising to me, but the way it's presented makes it seem plausible too.

I'd rather have Nintendo selling a cheaply made console for a cheap price. I can't imagine a $300 Wii U doing particularly well against $150 PS3s and 360s.

EDIT: Failed to keep up with the hype train. AGAIN.

*mocks*

That source says the actual console is $130. Wonder what we get for that.

Four GameCubes duct taped.

Funny part is that report saying how Nintendo cut production costs to please investors, and now there's reports that Nintendo is getting ready to announce a big financial loss. Seems like interesting timing.

http://www.investorplace.com/2012/0...le-for-nintendo-and-sony-aapl-sne-ntdoy-atvi/

Nintendo is expected to report net losses for the year of $838 million — Its first loss in 20 years. The company is vulnerable. The Wii U, a replacement for the Wii gaming console, is expected to be released later this year, but even though it boasts a unique controller, the system’s graphics capabilities are just reaching parity with the Sony‘s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 3 and Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox 360 – 2005-era systems that are expected to be replaced by more powerful consoles within the next year or two.

Yeah expect Wii U news april 26th at Iwata's investors meeting.

“Cutting production costs to maximize profits is Nintendo’s main concern with the Wii U. They are cutting costs in the Wii U’s hardware to build back confidence in investors. Nintendo wants investors to view Wii U as a less risky proposition. ”

Why a manufacture company could have access to that info.?

Really doesn't make sense if they are going to post a loss, we will see though, I think the rumors of the other consoles having low specs is more interesting than the Wii U having low specs.

Uh, no batshit insane monsterhouses anymore?
MS would go all out to please 3rd parties, that's what Alberto told us.

It (the $180 quote) looks eerily familiar. Weren't some NintendoGAFfers discussing this exact topic a day or two ago?

And those losses were expected. Expect lots of gloom and doom from the usual suspects soon. :P

I think Nintendo has proven more than once (and to the chagrin of many) that specs don't matter but a few days ago I made a post wondering if the early troubles the 3DS had hadn't made Nintendo gun shy about the Wii U.

It could mean that they've made big changes to their plans since last E3 and console won't be aimed at recapturing the hardcore gamer anymore. I mean if the specs are really as low as some of the new rumors are then it can't be, and it's probably one of the smartest things they could do.
