It is possible, if the USB is formatted to FAT32 (or a small partition at least) or something (not WBFS for sure).
Think you need to change/add to the config.txt file, by adding the storage (SD: sd, USB: usb) and the directories.

Example:
(Default)
covers_path = sd:/usb-loader/covers
[i.e. same directories form the SD Card]

(Changed to USB)
covers_path = usb:/usb-loader/covers


Alternative: Continue on SD, but only leave the covers that you use. (i.e. if you don't use/see disc covers, then erase those).
Also, you could lower the resolution to one of the covers to 512 x 340 and see if you notice any difference (on your set) between that one and the "full-res" version which is the one usually downloaded. That alone shaves around 50% of the total size of the full covers.

Though, I guess Clipper will provide a better/more accurate answer...or contradict what i just posted. But that's at least what I remember doing some time (months/years) ago. :p

I may be having a similar issue not sure. I've been through the whole process of getting everything installed to run the USB loader. I'm using a 32gb sdhc card and when I go to rip games to it I get a message that there is not enough space to do so. Any help would be great.

EDIT: For some reason it seems that I can only select the 2.0 gb card in the drive on the front of the system. How do I get it to use the SD card plugged in the back?

How are you plugging an SD card into the back of the Wii? The Wii can not use the drivers necessary to utilise USB card readers, so if you are attempting that, then that's your problem. Use the SDHC card in the front slot instead if it is your only storage medium.

How big is Xenoblade? Can I use a USB flash drive?

I plan on useing USB loader if the lens cleaning kit works.

So the Homebrew Channel updated to 1.1.0 and now there's nothing on the screen. It's like there is nothing on the SD card but I haven't changed anything at all. I did have Gecko and the shop updater there and nothing now.

Formatted my card, copied everything back on it and nothing :/

Guide, using Indiana Jones:
- Delete any Indiana Jones save games you have on your SD card or Wii.

- Download this: http://bootmii.org/download/
- Unzip the zip, drag boot.elf to your SD card. Do not put it inside any folder. Just drag the boot.elf file and have it on your SD card.
- Plug your SD card into your Wii.
- Boot Wii
- Wii Options > Data Management > Save Data > Wii
- SD Card > Indiana Pwns US Save > Copy to Wii's memory.
- Boot Lego Indiana Jones
- Load the save game.
- You will be in the college. Walk to the Art Room (through the courtyard). Inside the art room, approach the left character standing on a podium.
- When it zooms in on the character, choose the "Switch to" option.
- Lego Indiana Jones will now launch the Homebrew Channel installer.
- Wait while the installer runs tests.
- Press 1 when you are told to press 1 to continue.
- Your Wii will reboot, and you will see a "Homebrew Channel"

I ran into the error right after the bolded part. Can someone help me troubleshoot what's wrong?

Yeah, the HBC can't see your SD card for some reason. If it's a MiniSD or microSD in a caddy, ensure the caddy is fully closed (I had a problem once where the PC provided more pressure on the card than the Wii and only the PC got good contacts with the card until I fixed the caddy).

Also ensure your apps directory is named in lower case (although I haven't heard of this problem before, perhaps it's something new).
 
House of the Dead Overkill plays sooooooooooooooooooo much better ripped to the hard drive. 98% less stutter.

No updates should bother you seeing as you used the newest version of the GAF tutorial. Running the games from the drive is exactly the same as running them from the disc, so you're good there too and won't need to play from the disc first. You can even get them to log to the Wii Message Board properly by using the option listed on the configurable options page.

I bought Punch-Out! way back on release day and had completed the game. I backed up the save file to two of my SD Cards just to have peace of mind. I then deleted the save game file from the Wii itself.

How do you mean?

If you mean literally what you have posted then go on the Wii Shop and in the Channels you will have the option to update the Shop Channel if you haven't got the latest one.

The Wii system update is in the settings. Have a look in there.

However, if you are asking how you can update these without it borking your Wii Homebrew then use the GAF tutorial:

Dunno, but if you Wii is homebrewed then download the Save Manager app from the Hombrew Browser (or get it from wiibrew.org and install it yourself) and that'll restore your saves. It helped me when I had a similar problem with Twlight Princess.

If you mean literally what you have posted then go on the Wii Shop and in the Channels you will have the option to update the Shop Channel if you haven't got the latest one.

The Wii system update is in the settings. Have a look in there.

Thanks for responding. I have Homebrew and USBLoader installed (along with a back up of the NAND flash IIRC?) and the patch that loads the bug that's needed. I might try it all over again, but I'm not sure if things are working correctly or not.

My current problem is that I have nothing loaded on the USB drive. Will the program still launch (it seems it tries to) if there's nothing on the drive? I guess the next step would be to get a program for putting my games on the HDD itself. I also heard there is a program to let you play DVDs as well. Right now my Wii won't read dual layer DVDs so I'm hoping a good lens cleaning will do the trick and I don't have the official Wii one since they're out of stock. I'd be greatful for any help I can get.

There are several homebrew video players capable of playing DVDs (WiiMC and MPlayer CE are the best imo). But honestly, if you are already having issues with the lens I wouldn't use the drive for playing DVDs as doing that is wearing it down a lot faster than most games.

Yes; I just spent the last couple of days using Configurable USB Loader [as recommended in the GAF guide] to rip my Wii game collection to a hard drive.

Frankly, I found that the easiest part by far of the whole homebrew process.

It isn't really obvious. You have to press the + button when USB Loader has started. Took me a while to figure that out. >_>

It does specifically state this in the guide but perhaps you used an earlier version of the guide where it didn't?
 
Is there at way right now to get the configurable USB loader to rip my GameCube games to my USB hard drive vs. the SD card? CleanRip has a hard time ripping Mario Party 5 and the only >1GB SD card in the house are the ones my wife uses for her photography.

I really appreciated the design of this program and those who made it when doing over 40 discs. Sometimes techy types frustrate me because they design something that is easy to use for them and other techy types but which is clumsy and unfriendly to non techy types, like me. Not on this occasion though! Thank you techy types! :D

It's perfectly possible. Just perform the update like the previous poster suggested, or update the Wii and the shop channel normally. There are no issues with updating the Wii via the Internet at the current time.

Yes, either place will do, but it is easier to do within config.txt.

A new kitten decided to move in yesterday a year to the month after our first kitten decided to move in. So we've been managing them to see if they will get on or not :/. So not much sleep and even more hard of thinking today than normal!

I used startpatch to kill all region protection on the GC mode too, but I wonder if it's a BIOS thing. Any ideas?

I'm guessing those are the mods WiiPower made of Cfg to support Dios Mios Lite. Everyone on the Cfg dev team has either disappeared or is too busy to work on it. Perhaps they'll get integrated into an official version again sometime...

Just update the Wii as you normally would. If your homebrew is up to date (meaning you've updated everything within the last year or so) then the official update won't do anything to your homebrew installation.

As for emulation, discussion of the emulators seems to be OK, but don't discuss how to get the games.

Turn on the Vid Patch option for the game. Also ensure the language setting is set to Japanese. There is a font that is only used by Japanese games and you need to turn on one of those patches to have them display correctly.

The hash symbol is for comments, so you'd put those lines in after deleting the hash symbols in the front. Or you can use the Configurator app which comes with the Cfg download to load the current file, change those options, then save the new version in the correct format.

I was looking at the 'FTPii is a homebrew FTP server for the Nintendo Wii' page in our lovely guide, here:

and would really like to do this.

However, I believe my steam driven XP pc does not have a wireless network card. I have a wireless router but the pc is connected via an ethernet cable.

I have no experience of FTP at all so would this make this impossible for me to do unless I fitted a wireless network card?

Or would it be able to function via the wireless router?

If the latter, then from browsing the appropriate page in the guide I am sure that I would be able to follow that and accomplish it.

Sorry to ask such elementary questions but I am really not very techy, despite what all my friends and family seem to think!


I popped into my friendly neighbourhood pc geek emporium on the way into town today and they confirmed that I do not need a wireless network card as FTP will use the wireless router.

FTPii & FireFTP and configured as per instructed but I get error message "Unable to make a connection. Please try again."

However there is one part of the instructions that is confusing me:

    Type ftp://<IPADDRESS>/sd where <IPADDRESS> is the one displayed on your TV by FTPii.

Where am I supposed to be typing? In the 'Address' field of the 'My Computer' window?
