Stupid Questions |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads

I'm going to buy my first smart phone with a subscription and I have a question: When my subscription ends, I have to pay for everything with prepaid cards, right? Can you also use these prepaid cards to go online with the 3G networks or something similar to that?

These questions could be completely idiotic but this is going to be my first smartphone and my first subscription ever so I'm really clueless :lol.

Apparently my contract with Verzion (2 years) expired in January. They are still my provider and I'm on a month-to-month payment now. So, I could leave for someone else, renew and get a new phone, or stay on this month to month and keep my phone.

Do you think that you drink it for the caffeine/sugar content, or for the taste?

If it's the former, I might suggest weening yourself onto alternative drinks such as tea or even coffee. While both of those offer respectable amounts of caffeine without all those nasty additives soda usually has, tea is probably the healthier option long-term.
It used to be for the caffeine. After I started drinking it a lot more I stopped feeling the affects and was just because it tastes good. The thing is my doctor told me that soda is not good for my bones and it's probably not good for anyone's bones. According to my old doctor it does the same kinds of thing it does to a penny and eats away at it. The funny thing is when he told me this I was a teen. I had that rebellous aditude so that made me one a drink more soda so I did. Ever since then I've been addicted. I really don't like coffee and I really don't like tea. I think with enough of the creamers and stuff like that that I could find myself liking cofee.

Where is all content viewed or downloaded from the internet stored on a Mac, or any personal computer?

As in, does erasing an HD and reinstalling an OS make the computer like new? No content what so ever? The reason I ask is because upon searching, most people say content and history is stored in the ram, and I do not know if that is affected in a reinstall.

I really hate getting used computers from local listings, for this very reason.

RAM is cleared every time the PC shuts down, so you're fine on that. And effectively, yes reinstalling the OS on a PC will make it 'like new.' I can't say for Macs but on Windows most media viewed online is stored in temp folders in C:\Users\<username>\%AppData%

A couple weeks ago I was interested in freeing up some space on my main HDD and found some handy freeware programs that allow you to analyze your HDD and see which folders are using up the most space: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-disk-space-analyzer.htm I used SpaceSniffer, the first one in the list. Worked like a charm for what I needed it to do. But if you are trying to do this on a Mac you will probably have to look elsewhere.

Okay, thanks.

My main concern is what was left on this Macbook. I do not mind songs and stuff, but there are a lot of torrent files that apparently were never downloaded, (Sorry, I do not know the term for this, not really sure how people download things now a days). There are other things I am apprehensive about as well.

I am not comfortable with potentially incriminating files on this, and the lack of organization is also bothering me. I would have preferred to buy something retail.

Those are essentially just text files that a torrent program uses to connect to a tracker and download the appropriate information, if I am understanding you correctly. Is the torrent program still installed? You could open it up to find the download directory to see if anything is still there. Hopefully someone who is more intimately familiar with OS X can chime in cause I am pretty unfamiliar with how the file structure works.

But at least, here is a similar program to what I mentioned in my previous post for Mac: http://www.derlien.com/

I have Youtube playlists containing removed videos, all of which are songs. Luckily, the video title is listed so I can still search for another upload of the band's song. However, videos deleted by the uploader are listed as "Deleted video," which keeps me from updating my playlist. Is there a method to learning the title of a deleted video?

Has anyone experienced upgrading a phone on Verizon through Newegg? How does it work? I usually take my parents upgrades because they never use them. In the Verizon store they have no problem with this, but I think it would cause problems online.

quick edit-- Also Amazon Wireless

So, I've been on the Internet for a while, but I never got around to this whole "RSS" thing. What is it exactly?
If you have a RSS reader you can get updates from news sites, blogs, podcasts etc. without visiting the site. Instead of spending time browsing the web aimlessly you can have everything sent directly to you instead. I use the RSS feature in my email client for webcomics, podcasts and news sites which rarely post updates and it has saved me an enormous amount of time. All you have to do is subscribe to a RSS feed and the updates will pop up like an email.

My fiance says that its customary for the bride and groom to give gifts to each set of their parents on their wedding day. I've never heard of this shit. Is that really common? We are paying for our own wedding by the way.

I've never heard of it. Perhaps it's a family tradition, or one from a specific place?

Hey,

I'm looking for an internship in a graphic design agency in the States (New York preferably). Is it hard to find one when you're French?

Anyway I was wondering. Is there a typical North American dish outside Coleslaw?

I think she read about it on some wedding website.
I never understood splitting up traditions. If the parents aren't paying for the wedding or rehearsal dinner, then why is it traditional to give a gift?

I paid for my father/father in law's suits because they spent the bulk of the money for reception and honeymoon.

It's customary when the parents are helping with the wedding, I'm pretty sure.

How can i add a tracklist inside the metadata of an mp3 (like in the ID3-tag)?
I've seen people doin' mixtapes with the full tracklist in the id3-tag but i can't seem to figure it out.

You would probably use ID3's comment field.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

is it just me or did a mod go on a tagging spree? I see a bunch of new ones, my own included. Was hoping for triangles- ▲▲▲ - but that's cool. beggars can't be choosers :o

Does anyone know any software that benches hard drives so that I can compare to other hard drives? I want to upgrade so that Sims 3 doesn't take 5 minutes to load.

How do I get imgur to show my image on here as a clickable thumbnail that expands once clicked?

I know that it is possible because I saw a GAFer mention it but I don't know how and my Google Fu has failed me.

Do you want the image to open in a new tab/window?

Your only option to do it inline it put the full image in a quote box (please don't do that).

Well I don't like images that force me to scroll across the page just to read the text in the post. So I'm just trying to avoid forcing that on other GAFers really.

Take this image: http://i.imgur.com/PSV5S.jpg

In addition to the original, imgur automatically gives you the following:

http://i.imgur.com/PSV5Ss.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/PSV5Sm.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/PSV5Sl.jpg

So you could use one of those three and wrap the image in a URL tag like so:

(quote to see the tags)

Or you could just wrap it in a quote block to resize the width. With the quote block it will make the forum look nicer, but you're still making people download the original large image in its entirety.

That is just what I was looking for!

Thank you so much Zoe; much appreciated :)

Is Sobe life water really as healthy as they make it out to be?

I'm starting to drink it instead of soda in order to lose some weight and make myself healthier.

certainly better than soda, but a lot of that holistic health talk on water bottles and other drinks is probably just marketing speak.

my question: red bumps on the back of my throat, occasional gross taste like tonsil stones, plus my throat starting to swell + hurt = strep throat? (i will see somebody for it, but just curious)

Why do press releases always start with a city's name? For example, when Nintendo releases a press release, why do they always start with Redmond, Washington? I understand that it's where NoA is headquartered but I just don't get the importance of it.

The reason I ask is because I was just reading this thread and was confused why everyone does this.

Most likely.

It's called the dateline; it's just part of the format to show where the report is from.

Are you European? I had never heard of tonsil stones until some of Euro-GAF had mentioned it in a few threads. Is there something over there that causes it to happen more frequently than in the US?

nope, not european. They can happen to anyone but people with deep tonsil pockets, like me, are susceptible. add in that I was a smoker (quit on monday) and I'd been sedentary for the first 2 months of the year and that's a recipe for a fucked up respiratory tract/mouth.

like when I eat mini carrots (one of my fave snacks), I have to rinse out my mouth pretty well, cause they get caught back there easily.

Hey Gaf, when I power walk for a moderate, I suddenly get the feeling of soft pins and needles in my thighs. It doesn't "hurt" per se, but is rather uncomfortable and foreign a feeling. Is it just a lack of exercise? Friction with jeans?

It's a strange sensation. Not sure if anyone here might be familiar with it.

There are two USB game controllers I use on PC for different purposes, the X360 wired controller, and a PS3 Navigation controller with MotioninJoy. However, most programs aren't made taking multiple controllers into account. So when I go into a program there's a good chance it assumes whichever one was plugged in first is THE controller, or that it's definitely Joystick 1 and the other one is definitely Joystick 2. Is there any decent way to switch what is currently considered Joystick 1 that doesn't involve unplugging them both, plugging in the one I actually want to use, and restarting the program? I've tried going to the Game Controllers area in Control Panel and switching the "Preferred device:" setting, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.

EDIT: I found a program called JoyIDs that is able to change what Joystick ID the controllers have, but it doesn't seem to change anything. Running the DirectX Diagnostic Tool I can see that the IDs have been changed, but it doesn't seem to make programs treat them any differently whether they're 1 and 2, 2 and 1, 3 and 5, or any other combination.

For Australians...I'm going to be finishing my Cytotechnology program in August and just out of curiosity I was wanting to see if there are any jobs in Australia. What's the best job seeking website there?

Looking for a name of a movie I remember watching 10-12 years ago. I'll describe what I can recall but it's not much so if any of you GaFers can help me out that would be great.

Anyway it involves a bike gang who go around being all tough and shit, and this guy comes up to them with the power of invincibility, but the catch is they have to kill themself. So one by one they all off themself in creative ways except for this one guy who feels that it's not right. The others who killed themself came back from the dead and want the last remaining member to join them. That's about all I remember, it felt like a 70s maybe 60s film.

A name would be great because I want to watch it again. :)

The original name of the movie is Psychomania.
