New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

Hahah, let's reuse a lot of SMB3 stuff now!

"New Super Mario Bros" is the most grotesquely hilarious misnomer ever, because these games never actually do anything new of note. It's a god damned shame this series prints money so hard, because now there is no reason for them to actually make a compelling and interesting NEW Mario 2D title.

They are so common now we might have to start separating those mainline games into different groups. We got more Mario platformers this gen than the NES era did (actually, more like twice).

And every single one of them was awesome. I'm loving this trend, and Nintendo too.

You know, the addition of a true flying item means that the level design in this game might have to change significantly compared to the last two.

wait i just realized this could be super mario bros. 3-2.

NSMB1's title was meant to be as a new game based on the original NES SMB. Of course, since the game went on to become even bigger than the canon games, it became it's own series, and the name stuck.

Kinda like how the Final Fantasy games have their names.

the continuous running after you stop holding a direction and floaty jumping is really quite bad.

Huh? That's one of the best gameplay mechanics of the NSMB games.

Well... It'll sell but I can't say i'm excited. How much longer can Nintendo continue on with these rehashes and still get rewarded for it? I'd like to see more bold experiments like Kid Icarus Uprising.

Yeah, nintendo...

I like you a lot, but... the same game again?

(If nintendo is pushing same New Super Mario for the third time, we can forget about anything new on animal crossing...)

I like how we have two Mario platformers making it out before an Animal Crossing game announced before both of them.

I hate F2P, but if there was ever a game that would absolutely kill in an F2P format, it's Animal Crossing. So maybe that's the holdup!

Naturally, it's just Nintendo delaying as per usual.

Also, where are people getting this supposed EAD Tokyo vibe from? It looks almost IDENTICAL to all the other NSMB games. Unless they mean the tanooki tail was ripped from Mario 3D Land?

Also disappointed it seems to be using the same tired world themes for the third time in a row. Fucking hell, Nintendo.

Grass world as world 1. That's pretty much convention. Can't really judge the complete content of a game on what is clearly a screenshot of Level 1-1.

Please have online co op.

Yes even with this art style the NSMB series has alot of room for impovements.

First they need online co-op as you said. Then add our "favorite" characters from the Mario universe to play as. I don't want to play as those 2 bland Mushroom men ever again! Finally, give us a real challenge Nintendo. I can live with the art style if these things are there.

It's possible that EAD Tokyo is making the 3DS version, and EAD Kyoto is making the Wii U version. Both are NSMB games.

Nintendo could release 100 new ips but the moment Super Mario rears its head it's "lol Nintendo is creatively bankupt"

So, does anyone else think Nintendo releases the 3DS version in August without Miis and 4 player co-op and releases a WiiU as a launch title with co-op and Miis?

Wait, if this is releasing in August, Nintendo must have something even better up their sleeves for the holidays. That, or it's going to be all about the Wii U. Probably the latter, but I'll keep hoping.

HOLY SHIT @August

...please have a somewhat better visual style and be more like the Wii game, DS one was booooring.

God, I hope not.

Why. Nothing wrong with Nintendo establishing a constant feed of two types of platform Mario games. I could understand any qualms if NSMB was the only Mario platformer maintained, but Nintendo has been maintaining two main Mario platformers. Galaxy / 3D and NSMB.

The other three screenshots all show level themes past NSMB games have both covered.
Its a little disappointing, but if the level design is decent I can deal.
