Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

I've been wondering, will Ubisoft and EA be able to show any Wii U stuff at their respective E3 conferences? Considering that they'll have theirs before Nintendo?

And I'll just add my personal guesses here:

I looked at Nintendo’s first party studios, and a lot of them are working on mystery projects. I included the known projects, and projects that came out recently.

▪ EAD Comprehensive Group - ??? Nothing
▪ EAD Group 1 – Mario Kart Wii U? The Wii U Sports/Fit shown on the E3 2011 trailer for Wii U? Mario Kart Wii U
▪ EAD Group 2 – Animal Crossing Stick Out Animal Crossing, Wii U Play, Wii U Sports
▪ EAD Group 3 – Skyward Sword, Wii U Zelda Tech Demo? Zelda 3DS, Zelda Wii U
▪ EAD Group 4 – New Super Mario Bros. 2, Pikmin 3 New Super Mario Bros. 2
▪ EAD Group 5 – ??? Wii U Fit
▪ EAD Tokyo – Super Mario 3D Land, ??? (they have two development studios) Group 1: Pikmin 3, Group 2: Super Mario Wii U (Super Mario 4?), Flipnote Memo
▪ SPD Group 1 – ??? (Sakamoto is probably crying over the Other M bomba) Another Metroid with Team Ninja either for Wii U or 3DS
▪ SPD Group 2 – Oversees External Projects with partners and out of house teams Endless Ocean 3
▪ SPD Group 3 – See above Working with Retro, Monster and Curve, probably new IP, Wave Race Wii U, and a new downloadable Wii U game respectively
▪ SPD Group 4 – Same as above Maybe Wii U Party?
▪ SPD Group 5 – ???, (Maybe Brain Age 3 or some eShop title?) ???
▪ Nintendo NSD – ??? Nothing
▪ Nintendo SDD – ??? Nothing
▪ Nintendo Software Technology – They recently hired one of the co-creators of Sonic… Donkey Kong 3D Land
▪ Monolith Soft – ??? (They teased some project) Wii U game, 3DS game
▪ Retro Studios – Hiring noteworthy staff recently New IP
▪ Brownie Brown – ??? Fantasy Life
▪ Intelligent Systems – Paper Mario 3DS Paper Mario 3DS, WarioWare 3DS, Advanced Wars 3DS
▪ Project Sora – Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Smash Bros. 4 SSB 4, SSB 3DS
▪ Nd Cube –Mario Party 9 Wii U Party
▪ HAL Laboratory – Kirby: Return to Dreamland, Super Smash Bros. 4 (?) Kirby 3DS

And this isn’t including the plethora of Nintendo’s partners (Grezzo, Good-Feel, Next Level Games, etc).

The fact that the 3DS Nintendo Direct news last night was actually relevant to the Wii U discussion here lends me to believe that we could get insight in our speculation by examining Nintendo's past recent E3 efforts.

It was? What did you guys take away from that for WiiU, folders? I'm not actually joking there, I mean everything Nintendo does/fixes/embiggens in the 3DS OS we should see on the U right? One thing that struck me as neat and completely ignored is the game note function (which admittedly I myself haven't used yet). Could be nice for stuff like adventure games, personally I lost my drive to play 999 when I lost my sheet with all the solutions, so having that in the OS accessible any time would be sweet.

GAF will react in its own usual way when it comes to Nintendo things. It'll be an appreciation thread, which will attract plenty of other sentiments. It's the way tings are. *shrug*

But definitely a worthy endeavour!

fair enough. Might as well give it a shot. I'd say after E3, but maybe a month or two before the Wii U launch.

In truth, it doesn't seem that important. Would a higher resolution really affect the game?

Hmm, I just looked up "upscaling", to be certain. It doesn't even mean rerendering at a higher resolution, it's just some sort of screen-stretching method. Don't TVs do that anyway?

Well no, but SMG in 720/1080p would be amazing. If the Dolphin emu can do it, why not Nintendo? And upscaling = such as when putting a regular DVD into a Bluray and getting a higher resolution.

You're talking about patching Wii games to upscale? Can't be done because the hardware can't output a 720p/1080p signal.

And upscaling isn't what Dolphin does, it natively renders games at higher resolutions.

Yes. The fact that a Nintendo system now has -- or will very shortly have -- folders (and patches and DLC) makes it almost a certainty that the Wii U will have those features out of the box and not as of some vague after-launch sytem update, which was a big problem for the Wii and 3DS.

Really stood out to me because just the other day I had a thought that is accentuated by those outbursts quite well (not that it's new or radical or smth).
I mean really, the way I'm navigating my 3DS and soon the WiiU with touch controls, folders multimedia and all the jazz...it's a full blown OS, i power on my system get through boot insert a game and then start it up. It's a PC (with windows 8 it's really getting similar), which while being nice is still somewhat moving away from the 'plug in & play no worries' consoles used to be and which is still championed in every PC vs Console argument.
Now for something that won't happen: on the Wii with homebrew, you could have a video playing after boot, which had the nice side effect of being able to define hotkeys to the Wiimote which would directly boot into channels also allowing to start a game immediately.

Something like that would be so nice, bit I'm living in my Kirby Dreamland.

Dolphin does it badly with many-core systems. The Wii U would have to be more powerful than a top of the line PC to achieve similar results. Well, maybe. It depends on exactly how they handle the backwards compatibility. But it's not particularly easy to do.

Doesn't a TV display any standard resolution you give it at full screen? That doesn't seem to be any worse than upscaling to me.

That's what upscaling is. LCDs are fixed resolution. Everything you see is always 1080p. The TV upscales/stretches lower resolution content to its native resolution.

So… no matter what… the Wii game will be upscaled.

…right?

If that's the case, then I don't understand the original question, which was 'what if they offered patches to upscale certain Wii games into HD would you pay?'

Right. What people really want is for games to be RENDERED in 720p/1080p. That's what makes Dolphin look so good.

Yeah it was just the technically incorrect term.
Of course Nintendo could write a way better emulator than dolphin and may be able to get games in higher rez on U. Would be nice to have, "free" AA like that (even if it's just a tiny bit) would go lightyears for games like Galaxy.

No coincidene! Anthony, you're such an attention whore :lol At least I'm only hyorish.
*cough*it's a trap*cough*

I made that post before refreshing the thread. Little did I know 30+ "FOLDERS! MEGATON" posts were already made :lol

You know GAF man, one of us! ;D

I was going to do a Hype Recap about that, actually.

Also, yes, I will include Sony and Microsoft hype.

(Really wondering if GAF would accept such a thread.)
Not sure on that one. We'd essentially have four conversations going-on at once in the thread..at the minimum.

I still think it'd be worthy!

Oh good. Then I understood the question correctly. I had parsed it in my head as "Would you pay extra to see your game fullscreened on a TV?" :D

A lot of people use "upscale" in place of "render at a higher resolution." The terms aren't interchangeable, but you can usually assume that is what they really mean.

I'm digging the "root shell" they have there at the upper-right, even if they should have a "#" where they have a "$". :)

No it's actual code from the Wii-U. It's the one to print money.gif

I guess I can agree with that; the 'U' off to the side by itself looks a bit.. off.

I wonder if there's a pronunciation difference.

It's the Nintendo Whew!

Also, money is boring to Nintendo, they have way too much of that stuff HT, you should know that ;D

I'd love to see an updated version of that gif.. :)

(and is it me, or does Iwata look bored there?)

It's very excellent idea thread about "This Year in Hype" for the three companies. BY2K would outline big events in Hype over the past year, including reactions here at GAF.

Oh it won't be just the last year. I could go as far as 2004. Just need to do a bit of research.

Holy crap.. that would be one hell of a project.

You'll be starting in this year and moving backwards, I presume? That's gonna take some time. This past generation was incredible for hype.

I won't do them all. Just some here and there until E3.
