I love the Liquidmetal Coating deck a ton, it's like the ultimate asshole deck.

Why no Crush though? Birds of Paradise would make the deck more explosive too, and really nothing says screw your $300 decks more than turn 1 BOP - turn 2 coating + crush taking out their only land.

Do you have to have a liquimetal coating in your opening hand or ?

Yea pretty much, the deck is entirely dependent on it. So I either need 1 in my opening or draw 1 early.

It's a deck for a goof, not something I'd ever play competitively.

Because Birds are expensive and I only have 1.

Oh and sorry I missed your invite WW, I didn't realize I'd left MTGO running.

Hm, I think its time to rebuild my U/B/W EDH deck. I dismantled it after playing Sen Triplets got me killed every game because everyone was like "kill the guy with the Sen Triplets".
I'm on the fence between using Sharuum and Dromar. Dromar seems like he'd be incredibly annoying though, and Sharuum doesn't feel as splashy as I like for more casual games.

Yeah I mean if you wanted to keep it budget, Llanowar Elves would work. I think this deck is crazy good as a land destruction deck and the Crush play on turn 2 would make me so giddy.

Either way I love this concept, will probably sleeve it up at FNM just for kicks. Total awesome budget deck.

Now I kind of want to get into MtG...

Join ussssssssss!!!

I notice that this thread is actually quite popular in GAF. It's usually on the first 2 pages....(but I've subscribed to this thread long ago).

My EDH decks are: -

Niv Mizzet (without Curiosity and Ophidian Eye)
Mimeoplasm (sort of retired)
Azami (a bit of a snore fest....didn't have much fun playing this)
Edric (Deceptively powerful deck..had a lot of fun with this)
Rune Tail (Defensive life gain deck)
Scion (Under construction...was supposed to be a turn 2 Hermit Druid deck, but didn't feel like making it)

On another note, I'm looking for a playset of Tarmogoyf and Scavenging Ooze. Anyone has 'em? I have some Unlimited duals up for trade..(underground sea, bayou, scrubland and tundra).

*sigh*

I'm relapsing into MtG for maybe the 6th time in my life. Staved off the desire with DotP last year, but the game looks like too much fun right now. The first order of business is to rebuild my Phelddagrif EDH deck. It wasn't competitive to begin with (obviously, it's Phelddagrif), but I'd really like to turn it into a fun casual deck. Lots of friendly cards like Eledamri's Vineyard, Oath of Druids and the like. Any recommendations of what to play in UGW with a lot of spells beneficial to all players? I've missed a decent amount of stuff since I last quit at the beginning of Lorwyn block.

Also, in case there are any Phoenix area players, identify yourselves!

I relapse back into MtG one time....and if I ever quit again, I'm never EVER gonna give the cards away or sell 'em off!! Cause the itch will be back again!

I tried out my Black/Red sligh deck today against a W/U delver variant. I got him to low health so many times, but all it took was a Mirran Crusader equipped with a Batterskull and it was GG for me.

Stupid lifelink.

Felt the urge to play magic again after stopping about ten years ago. I'm considering getting the missing staple cards, and I feel way past buying boosters and trading.

Three I know of are Troll and Toad, Starcity Games, and Cool Stuff Inc.. I haven't really heard anything bad about any of them and I rotate depending on the price. Depending on the card one may be a couple bucks cheaper than the others or they might all be the same price. I just got 4 Huntsmaster from Troll and Toad since they were on sale for $20 but were still $25 elsewhere. Depends really.

I've never really bought cards online, but I've done a ton of trading through Reddit and to a lesser extent, here.

Depends on where you live.

I wouldn't recommand ChannelFireball, though. Made a relatively big order there, never received it. They swear they shipped it, so I guess it may be USPS fault or something, but no way to prove it either way.

This too. See if there's somewhere close by or be willing to wait. I'm in the NE of the US and it takes about a week no matter where I order from. If you can find a place closer so you'll receive it quicker it may be more worth it.

What's a good starter set to buy for someone who wants to get into Magic? I've told a cousin of mine who lives abroad of Magic 2012 on PSN and he's liking the game and would like to try it out IRL.

For standard/staple stuff I've had pretty good luck with just going to Ebay and searching for the card I want + free shipping.

Forgot about this too, I think the condition of the cards are even better from Ebay in my experience than the online card shops, go figure. And you usually don't need to find free shipping since it's usually like $1.80 for each auction, just make sure they're not trying to price gouge on shipping. Once in a blue moon you'll still see people who act like that.

If you just want to get the feel of it you can buy the starter decks, they're nothing spectacular but it's a 50 card deck (No legal for playing Friday Night Magic) but still usually pretty fun to dick around with. The new ones for Avacyn Restored should be out soon but you can get any really.

Ex: http://trollandtoad.com/p321620.html

Or if you want to spend a little more, they have slightly better decks that are 60 cards and you can use for Friday Night Magic and can do ok depending on the level of decks at your store but still fun to play.

Ex: http://trollandtoad.com/p323596.html

Again, they make them in different colors and color combos and different for each set, Innistrad, Dark Accension, M12, Avacyn Restored, etc. The Avacyn Restored should be out in another couple of weeks or you can get one of them. But they're pretty cheap and fun to play with until you decide how much you want to get into it.

Edit: Or you can do like he said below, depends on if you want a pre made deck or looking to buy booster packs and go from there.

If you mean Theme Decks, the last good theme decks were 6 years ago.

If you mean starter sets, then, well, you can't go wrong with M12 considering it is supposed to be the Core Set to ease in new players into the fundamentals.

Best game ever. Do it.

It really is an amazing game. People across the entire world enjoy it, and as long as Wizards keeps up the good work, the community will grow.

My friends and I run a Youtube channel that covers our local FNM. I never expected it to gain widespread appeal, but we've been getting some views from unexpected places. Some include India, Norway, Macedonia, South Africa, Serbia, Bolivia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Peru, Venezuela, Hungary, Malta, etc...

Assuming these weren't complete accidents, it just goes to show how great Magic really is.

I didn't include the channel URL because I didn't want this to feel like a shameless self plug, lol.

I believe these are all actually 60 cards now. Dunno when that switch happened. They are still only really good for casual magic or getting started because the card quality just isn't there (which is why they are so cheap).

Did they? Last I bought was Zendikar/ Rise of Eldrazi and they were still 50 there because I had 80 sleeves and had to buy another set because I was 20 short. They could have upped it since then since that was a while ago.

Yeah, they were a good deal when I played in high-school because everyone was so casual that all of our decks were cobbled together from a handful of boosters and a few precons, but now that everyone buys significant amounts of cards there's not much value in them anymore

Sligh deck is a very old term MtG...during Ice Age/Alliances era. Basically, the most efficient spells/creatures at the right mana curve.

Here's an article on it.

Here's an article by Wizards themselves.

Nowadays, in legacy, this mono red deck is commonly known as Burn. Plays efficient creatures such as Goblin Guide, Keldon Marauder, Hellspark Elemental...and they are already testing out Vexing Devil. The rest of the slots are just pure burn spell.

The Dark Ascension event deck that uses red is a pretty straight-forward and well-put together deck.

Anybody else think that

DevastationTide.jpg

might be a sleeper?

It MURDERS token setups and would put a crimp in any kind of Frites deck.

Also, what's with the flavor text recalling Force of Will? That's strange.

My friend is playing a deck with Helvault and Worldslayer.

Think about it :D

I thought about it long and hard -- wanted to put it on an Invisible Stalker -- and I never could get past how expensive it is to play Worldslayer plus its equip cost.

What kind of scheme is he running?

The moment Helvault gets destroyed by Worldslayer, all the permanents he exiled with it will come back post-total-boardwipe, pretty much ensuring a GG if you had exiled 2-3 of your creatures beforehand.

Yeah, I know that. But again, Worldslayer costs 5 to cast and 5 to equip. It's a super expensive trick to try and set up. Not to mention Helavault costs 3 to cast and one to activate.

It depends on what kind of setup you have going on, but it's slow to set up and incredibly fragile as a combo. All it takes is one Ancient Grudge to put this down. I know I know, "dies to counter lololol" but I'm telling you, any deck worth its salt should be able to prevent a Helavault/Worldslayer combo from going off or simply out race it. It's just slow.

I'm curious as to whether his friend figured out a way to reliably push this combo off in a manner that wasn't asking to be cut down.

Ah yeah it was just with our group of friends he pulled it out and nobody was really expecting it :p It's not much more than a fun trick, exactly because it takes so long to set up. There might be a way to set it up that isn't horrible, but I doubt it'd be any good in a serious environment.

edit: Now that I'm thinking about it harder, if you go blue/white control~ with Invisible Stalker / Grand Abolisher it might not be too hard to get going.

I haven't posted in this thread before, but since moving to Taiwan a few months ago a few friends here has gotten me into Magic, after basically avoiding it my entire life. I've been working on a wolf/werewolf deck and I think it is getting pretty good. I know where the holes are, but it isn't like I can get some of the cards I need/want easily.

10 Forest
10 Mountain
1 Kessig Wolf Run
1 Kazandu Refuge
2 Copperline Gorge

24 land

1 Huntmaster of the Fells
4 Mayor of Avabruck
3 Instigator Gang
4 Immerwolf
3 Reckless Waif
2 Wolfbitten Captive
2 Hanweir Watchkeep
2 Daybreck Ranger
2 Young Wolf
1 Mondronen Shaman

24 creatures

1 Naturalize
2 Hunger of the Howlpack
3 Full Moon's Rise
4 Moonmist
2 Clinging Mist

12 spells

I'm having the most trouble with the spells. I really need some more protection when I can't just overwhelm someone in 5-6 turns.

Cloudpost/glimmer post artifact ramp might be able to do it. I've seen some crazy Eldrazi shenanigans with those.

No idea what my friend was doing with his deck, it was just mono blue with invisible stalkers and random cards he had, plus worldslayer and helvault. This is my super fast iteration on a blue/white helvault/worldslayer shenanniganry deck:

Creature (19)

3x Hero of Bladehold
3x Grand Abolisher
4x Invisible Stalker
4x Champion of the Parish
2x Angelic Overseer
3x Geist of Saint Traft

Artifact (5)

2x Worldslayer
3x Helvault

Instant (11)

3x Think Twice
4x Mana Leak
4x Vapor Snag

Land (25)

11x Island
10x Plains
4x Seachrome Coast

Maybe?

Gideon Jura
Sun Titan
Venser, the Sojourner
Indomitable Archangel
Adaptive Automaton

Probably too hard to get going, but I have fun thinking about stuff like this :)

If I were going to do this deck I probably would do a green ramp scheme with it so I could get the mana out and combo off as fast as possible. This is as streamlined as I can think to make it, but it would probably really suck.

Creatures
  • 4x Llanawor Elves
  • 4x Birds of Paradise
  • 3x Huntmaster of the Fells

Artifacts
  • 3x Sphere of the Suns
  • 2x Pristine Talisman
  • 3x Worldslayer
  • 2x Helavault
  • 2x Spellskite
  • 3x Batterskull

Spells
  • 4x Rampant Growth
  • 3x Green Sun's Zenith
  • 2x Gitaxian Probe

Land
  • 12x Forest
  • 1x Mountain
  • 4x Copperline Gorge
  • 4x Rootbound Craig
  • 2x Ghost Quarter
  • 2x Kessig Wolf Run

You want as much early game ramp as possible because A) If it gets picked off there's always more to draw on and B) If it sticks it's awesome. Eight mana creatures, five mana producing artifacts and four rampant growth should ensure you're going to just be cooking along the ramp curve, and if you're short a mana dork there are three Green Sun's to help.

You have heavy threats in both Dungrove and Batterskull. Batterskull has good evasion if you have the mana to use it and a Dungrove can wear it if need be (hell, so can the birds or elves). I'd honestly like a better threat than Batterskull because a CMC of 5 is hard to swallow along with the Worldslayer costs, but this design is kind of off the cuff at work. I originally had Wurmcoil, but that's even pricier. Batterskull is also an amazing card to land after blowing up a Helavault though, so it has its ups in inclusion.

Spellskite is in to protect your ramp investments (and maybe your Worldslayer/Helavault combo later) if you can resolve it. Tragic Slip is a lot less effective on a Birds if you change the target to your opponent's creature, or hell, to the Spellskite itself. You'd also probably rather see Spellskite die to Doom Blade as well. It's worth the life investment early game, especially with Pristine Talisman and Batterskull.

It's a very single-minded idea, and I don't know if it would work, but it would be my first attempt at making it happen.

Edited: Took out Dungrove for Daybreak, then Daybreak for Huntmaster. Changed red splash to a bigger splash.

I feel like the spirit of the combo is to load up a couple of threats in the Helvault and have Worldslayer break it open. Dungrove Elder is probably the worst possible creature to try that tactic with, since you won't have any forests left. ;)

I thought about that after I hit post. lol Then I said fuck it.

Maybe Daybreak Ranger, but I wanted a 3 drop with evasion.

Suggestions?

Edit: I feel like if we just bumped up the red mana presence a tad and took out Daybreak we could get Huntmaster in as a good threat. You probably won't cast anything on the turn you blow up the Helavault, and if he lands chances are your opponent won't have access to two spells either.

Ooh I hadn't thought about a ramp. I'll have to think of that a bit more.

But yeah, I figured if I could get even a couple Champion of the Parish in there with another card, maybe a Hero of Bladehold, they'd basically be toast. That's why I was considering Adaptive Automaton, too :D He can come in as whatever type would be most beneficial.

Undying anything.

I didn't think about this either. Undying guys come back after the world is destroyed! Hum :O

So has anyone been reading the new ReConstructed column over at DailyMTG? It goes into more depth for individual card choices then a lot of other sources I've seen, I'm really enjoying it.

If you're ramping in mono-green, you could just use Predator Ooze and other undyings and skip the Helvault entirely.

While we're dreaming, just imagine giving the sword to Avacyn. :)

Undying anything.

I stayed away from undying to preserve the quick ramp. Strangleroot Geist is a great two drop but if I'm trying to ramp I'd want to play two mana dorks or a Sphere of the Suns instead. Plus, Young Wolf isn't that great and Vorapede is expensive to cast.

My thoughts on the combo are you're only going to have time to ditch one or two threats before needing to pull the trigger. It'd be great to have a Hero in there with an Automation, but it might be really difficult to do especially since the Hero is ALWAYS a target once it hits the board.
