The Nazis beat the French, but then again they also kicked Britain right the hell off the main continent too afterwards. Then London was getting bombed. Everybody likes those Keep Calm and Carry On signs, that was a sign designed by the British government to be posted everywhere for when Britain surrendered. That's how close it was, an official sign. The Nazi war machine was a blitzing steamroller, France borders Germany, France was the most important strategic target. France got the full effect and got it first. And there was still a French Resistance after the government capitulated.

At the risk of derailing the thread, that's not true. Britain was never "close" to surrendering, and that's not what the sign was made for (though it is true they didn't actually use the sign very much). The sign was designed before the war started.

Vietnam too, and got bailed out in WWI. That's where it comes from, French modern military campaigns.

See, the U.S. didn't surrender, per se, they just weren't fighting. Strategically, this was important. Our pants were down as much as everybody else's and we needed time. But it sure doesn't make us look more badass than the French. They fought and lost.

The U.K. had 400 planes left, after starting with 2,000. Over 3,000 British citizens were killed in one day in December right before Hitler gave up. It was pretty close, man.

But they didn't lose the Battle of Britain or ever really come close to losing it. In addition to the British losing fewer aircraft in the actual fighting, the attrition rate of planes and pilots for the Germans was far higher, for a number of reasons, which caused the Germans to call off the daylight attacks. Despite relentless attacks, the British air defense system as a whole was never really in jeopardy.

Given the defiant tone of British propaganda and public figures, I would be shocked if surrender was imminent. After that campaign ended, and especially after the huge influx of US troops began I believe in 1942, a Nazi invasion was pretty much out of the question. Nuclear weapons would have complicated things, though.
