Steam frame and steam controller likely being announced next week

Anyone else hoping the steam frame isn't VR at all?

Yeah I'm not buying another headset. All in for that controller though. Track pads make so many more games viable on a TV.

Even stuff that has built in controller support, like for instance Monster Train 1/2, is night and day better with the track pads.

Yes. I know there are a minority of people who are die-hard VR fans, but I have felt since the beginning it's a big over-hyped waste of resources. I have no confidence any new VR hardware will significantly change the direction of the medium. It's a software problem.

I had a Steam Controller. It was interesting and had a really nice shape in the hands, but the goal of adapting KBM inputs to a non-standard controller never worked for me. I spent hours trying to get KBM only games to feel like they had dedicated controller support by tweaking the Steam Controller, and it never worked. It was always awkward and frustrating. I eventually gave it away to a friend.

If their plan is to sell this new controller for use with dedicated controller support games, and the track pads are just for using a mouse in menus, then that would probably be a much better approach. That seems to have worked great for the Steam Deck. And nearly every game that can offer dedicated controller support these days does.

I am hoping it's the Steam Exoskeleton Suite that Gaben ia producing to create Valve legion hellbent on world domination.

Maybe the Emperor from Warhammer 40K was Gaben all along! Here is a highly realistic picture of this setup!

Why? We need more vr stuff. And its been kinda leaked they have home console type system in works too, wo more choices
VR had its chance and failed. its now with the Kinect in useless crap heaven .. Only time when VR will be good is when you do not need any glasses at all.

You said physics haven't improved since HL2. Therefore there are still a lot of improvements to make.
Perfect for the grav gun or portal gun. You know it makes sense.

Because physics is already in end state. Sound didn't improve much from 1997 either. You can't make sound 2.0. Physics outside of total destruction already is in the game and total destruction is limited by game design not by processing power or lack of technology. Players could already destroy level in Red Faction before Half Life 2 was even made and yet Half Life 2 didn't include it.

Portal gun much like full destruction limits game design as you won't be able to have open environments, that's why portal games take place in those complexes.

No glasses at all huh? Next time I read one of your posts will be when Neogaf broadcasts it directly into my brain.

I really hope that Valve Frame will have battery and processing done on puck in your pocket not on headset itself. It would be massive win comfort wise.

It is without a doubt VR and it's going to be awesome and the tears from VR haters will be the icing on the cake. :messenger_savoring:

It's typical "I don't own it so it sucks" thinking. Ton of people will get VR headset if HL3 will be announced in VR. Alyx already did that but Valve never promoted it as proper HL sequel.

Do you understand this curve? Ever seen it?

Just dropping arms at early innovation stage is not what these peoples are betting on.

Also obligatory

Yeah, I could care less about VR outside of a general like "oh new technology I wanna know the details" type of thing. I've owned multiple VR headsets (OG Rift, PSVR, Quest 2, PSVR 2) and while I've definitely enjoyed some stuff overall I'm just meh on it. I unfortunately get pretty bad headaches within an hour of most titles.

Gran Turismo 7 by far is what I miss the most not having a headset anymore. That game was absolutely phenomenal.

I really just want to see the controller and the "console".

Honestly outside of betsheda, valve and few other games VR games mostly suck ass because developers there are mostly focused on motion controls rather than making compelling games first.

PCVR is thriving mostly thanks to mods like UEVR or Framework for Capcom games and PCtoVR mods done by other people which just convert already great games into VR. Cyberpunk 2077 in VR is just insane experience I wish everyone could see.

Quest 3 is fine for me and my VR needs at the moment. There hasn't really been many compelling games that I have wanted to play since Quest 3 launched on that platform or PC, so I'm in no rush for the next VR device.

VR games have largely sucked because 95% of them are indies, and not just indies, but super small indies developing their first game ever. The few "AAA" VR games from major Pubs/franchises have been farmed out to shitty, cheap external studios, or C-team green staff interns to get their feet wet developing. Alyx and the Resident Evils are the only true AAA, AA, or even single A games VR has seen in a decade.

I'm looking forward to the eventual reveal as VR, for me, is the best way to play. A standalone package with access to steam sounds great, as long the tech is a step up from quest. If it approaches PS5 visual quality then I'm sold on it.

No. HL2 wasn't the end game for physics in video games.

For example, you mentioned destruction. Why not have modern voxel or hybrid mesh systems to let players actually break down environments into realistic materials. Wood splinters, rebar bends, glass shatters dynamically etc.

Real time deformable materials. Metal bending, flesh ripping, fabric tearing.

True fluid dynamics where water, fire, smoke, and gas behave as continuous entities, interacting with objects and temperature realistically.

You said the gravity gun was "gay", but what about a new, improved gravity gun? A gun that can manipulate fields, not just objects. Bend gravity locally, change inertia, or alter mass dynamically. Imagine flipping a room upside down mid-fight or creating a localized zero-G bubble!

Think outside the box. HL3 needs to be as revolutionary as HL2. Not just a slight upgrade.

Japanese official decks retailers website has gone offline

the last meta head set barely sold million units.
Reported some year, plus previous models are still around and other headsets. Theres steady flow of games and mods too. It might be nice, but its not a failure.

Nobody owns a Valve VR headset yet.

I don't hate it if it's on the VR headset. If that was the only way to play then I'd buy it. I just think if it is VR only then it might be held back.

Why not make it for both VR and desktop?

How many decades does vr need on that curve? 🤣

Doesn't matter how long. For your no glasses thing? Unreasonable ask and timeline.

I think most peoples would have their jaw drop with a wide FOV and slim headset and a couple of iterations. Already in the prototype phase it's heading in the right direction.

Most peoples would be fine with ski mask / glasses.

It's niche until it isn't. Stopping releasing products and research is a good way to miss the train.

It's absolutely part of the future, now it's which company have on the roadmap to achieve it, while releasing products along the way of course to have an userbase and fund the R&D of future headsets.
