Heh, bets all over the place. I'm sticking with my prediction/avatar bet of it not breaking $250m in the US.

Everything I've heard about the movie from people's opinion I respect is that it's an average but fun movie but not one that they'd go out of their way to watch again in theaters.

Man, so fucking wrong...There is no way it doesnt break $250 million.

Who did you have that bet with? 250M is a lock by 2nd weekend.

So I just got back from seeing it for a second time. (this time in 3D, which I didn't really care for)
It reminds me a lot of Battleshits.
The Avengers has amazing (this can't be stressed enough) action sequences. The cuts to every character throughout the extended action sequences well choreographed and every character is utilized with innovation.

It has some real zingers, good one-liners.
The Captain - Police bit was so damn corny though.
A couple like that fell flat for me but overall great comedic timing to combat all
the doom and gloom.

Now the plot.
Or lack thereof. The whole film is intro and then the huge battle. That's all there is to it in my mind. The set-up of the villains and getting all the heroes in one place and then kicking ass. That's fine, the action and kicking ass is great. But it's very shallow.

The ending reeks of deus ex machina. Skarsgard scientist guy conveniently was able to resist Loki's spell and put in a work-around? This isn't hinted at, at all. I also like the portal business. Apparently nuclear missiles work in space? Why doesn't Iron Man then? Shouldn't it be an either or situation? Follow reality and they don't work or this story's universe they both can work in space. No?
So is
Black Widow, Maria Hill etc's prominence because of Joss Whedon's feminist influence?
Why we still
got unnecessary extended butt shots then? I mean I like them, but come on.

Captain America by itself managed over 176 million in the US. Avengers has a ton more hype

Among fans of those movies, which is why I think it won't be a big hit as some are predicting/hoping.

Only a week left so we'll know soon enough, but I'm confident I'm right...

No offense man, but I can't stop laughing. It will make $200m the first week alone. For it to now break $250m domestically is just laughable.

LOL you're a cool guy and everything but you're absolutely delusional on this. It will make 250 like nothing.

that's a shame about the spoilers. I don't give a shit about this film's story though so I don't mind but what a dick-move. I'm just expecting a string of fun action scenes mashed together by some dogshit plot. Sculli and jett's review put me in line with expectations of a fun time.

To be fair to him, usually international audiences have to bail out of Film OT's all the time once it releases in the US because somebody is always going to talk about the movie openly.

It's been out for 4 days now in overseas territories. But yeah, spoiler tags are always appreciated.

It's absolutely baffling how people don't tag spoilers. For a gaming forum at least, spoiler tags should be a button in the new reply area by default. Even still, I have a feeling some people really don't give a shit. For some threads in gaming, people post blatant ending spoilers and defend themselves by saying they didn't think it would be deemed spoiler worthy. SMH.

Months of being able to avoid spoilers, and the first post I read is that guy's.

Glad to hear the movie is good. I'm not a Whedon fan, but these movies can be easy to screw up. I think we might be 3 for 3 with super hero movies this summer.

John Carter isn't a superhero and March isn't summer.

We'll see. I think people are expecting too much from a movie that's had very little hype/advertising. I've yet to see any trailers beyond a few billboards.

3N16MA.

As I said, we'll see.

It is tracking to make $150m+ opening weekend alone. For it to not break $250m would be failure on the level of John Carter.

I am not a Whedon Fan either but this was probably the best Marvel movie since Iron Man 1 which I think is still the best one.

Enough! Everyone just take a moment here! The fact is, we're still alive. A hole hasn't burned in the thread, roosters has edited his post and the thread hasn't been locked.

gotta say though, that
extended shot of everyone fighting in the city
and specially the part where
iron man bounces his beams off of cap's shield
was pretty much the highlight for me. Looked at my friend and we were both beyond geeked out. So much fan service. Whedon was the right man for the job hands fucking down.

Figured this would be the best place to ask this. Since it's a question i doubt it's a spoiler but just to be safe.

has any news about future marvel movies come out? Most curiously a Hawkeye or Nova movie

Here's the list of movies confirmed to be in development

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Cinematic_Universe

Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2. I think an Ant-Man movie is being worked on, and a Shield movie may be in the works.

Ant Man is something I would be incredibly excited for based on Wright alone.

There is nothing interesting about Ant Man as a character. Wright is a competent director. He'd make a great Ant Man movie, but the character is still Ant Man. Boring, uninteresting Ant Man.

Ant Man doesn't belong here. It would be one hero too many. One obscure comicbook character too many. He doesn't deserve his own film if Hawkeye, and Black Widow, who held their own, and played a major part in the Avengers, haven't gotten their own flick.

Stop Marvel. Please stop it now.

Yeah, I've no clue who Ant-Man is yet I'm anticipating it due to his and Joe Cornish's heavy involvement.

Very interested in seeing how Iron Man 3 turns out with Shane Black at the helm as well.

Iron Man is going to be balls-deep awesome. Shane Black writing for Tony Stark/RDJ in an action film is a dream made in heaven.

That's not really a spoiler, but nothing is cornet atm, apart from maybe a Dr. Pym movie (Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket), but who knows if it will be part of the Avengers or a standalone thing.

At the San Diego Comic Con in 2010, Wright confirmed that his script is an origin story, and that doesn't work for Marvel's chronology to include Ant-Man in The Avengers. Wright stated in January 2011 that he resumed writing the script for the film. During a Q and A at SXSW for Cornish's movie Attack the Block, Wright and Cornish stated that they had been recently rewriting the script. While attending Kapow-Con in April 2011, Cornish revealed that Wright and he had delivered the second draft to the studio. Then on July 2011 Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish delivered a third draft and some concept art to Marvel Studios.

Kevin Feige confirmed that Henry Pym is referred to in the film Thor as the friend that Dr. Selvig e-mails that had previous "experience" with SHIELD, though his name was cut out of the scene.

But just last month this is what Feige had to say about it;

"It's somewhere. I'll just say it's closer than it's ever been in its long maybe eight year history, and I usually e-mail Edgar every two or three days and over those eight years its got further away and closer," said Feige. "We are now closer than we've ever been. So I hope it will come together shortly."

Either way, if it does get done, it seems like they will be following two timelines, 1960s for Pym and then jumping to modern day to follow Scott Lang. Who know what'll come of it, though.

I'm hoping for a Black Panther movie soon, though. I doubt they'd do a standalone Hawkeye or Black widow exclusive movie, it'd probably be a SHIELD movie with them being main characters (along with Fury).

I agree. It will wash away the bad taste Iron Man 2 left in my mouth.

Not that interested in Ant-Man either.
Frankly, I'd rather have She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, (Spider-Woman), (Quicksilver), Dr. Strange or Luke Cage.

Ant-Man would only be acceptable in combination with the Wasp.

this movie raised the bar so high that now i'd feel kinda bored watching a marvel movie with just one superhero on it :p

obviously Shane Black fixes all that tho

also i wonder how they're gonna handle Cap 2. Set in modern times i guess?

I feel like it's waaay to early to have those characters join the Avengers if you don't even have the main original cast yet. Apart from perhaps Dr. Strange, I wouldn't really want most of those for Avengers 2.

I assume so. though I hope they will take the Brubaker approach of having relevant flashbacks to WWII.

Oh I agree. I was just listing characters I prefer instead of Ant-Man. Also, they definitely need more girl power. Obviously they found enough for Black Widow to do, but they need a heavy hitting girl. I'd love for it to be Jessica Drew, but with the licensng problems, I assume Ms. Marvel would be their best bet.

PS: Wouldn't put it past Whedon to put his own creation Agent Brand in Avengers 2 (if he was to direct it).

I have to chime in and say this movie blew away my expectations, great popcorn movie. Especially HULK, who although is not my fav character in general, but man....for once he lived up to his potential in a movie!!!

I don't think he resisted the spell at all. It's just a secret fail save and in theory can only be operated by Loki with his spear.

I don't think the portal opens up into actual space, the enemies can breath (?) there etc. It's just like the "magical" world of Asgard etc. (I could be wrong because I have no knowledge of the comics).
Anyway, IIRC the reason for Iron Man's malfunction was that he was out of energy. He was even told that he won't have enough energy to come back etc.)

On the ending:

Iron Man ran out of power, that's why the suit didn't work, IIRC. I can't remember the exact line but Jarvis said something about running low just before he goes for the portal. And it worked up to the point where he lets go of the missile, didn't it?
