I agree 500M is looking like a lock but I'm being a bit conservative.
Foreign daily totals are going up, but lets be conservative, ignore the trend and take only 30M.

Wed: 30M
Thu: 30M

Total is upto 320M. It will go up on the weekend + add territories like Russia & China.

Fri: 40M
Sat: 50M
Sun: 40M

Total is 450M based on foreign gross alone. You dont think it will have an opening weekend of 50M domestic?

Again, these are HIGHLY conservative numbers.

People must be smoking some good whedon to think that this film is hitting 1b.

Indeed.

I think all of that is usually factored in when tracking a release like this.

Dark Shadows will do well but I don't see it cutting into The Avengers box office that much. I think The Dictator has a better chance of doing that.

Never underestimate Depp's appeal overseas.

As for Dictator, can't see it making much of an impact. The trailer for it played before Hunger Games, not a single laugh in the theater.

Let's hope Fox comes to their senses as well.

Spidey and Wolverine in Avengers 2... HHHHGGGGGGGNNNNN

I don't see this happening and I don't really want it happening. In the MCU, the X-men don't have a place. The entire universe is written with the understanding that there are no mutants and it isn't an issue in the world at all. Trying to introduce that this late in the continuity is a recipe for disaster.

I completely forgot to account for Wed/Thu. Even then my numbers are off.

They will wait until Amazing Spider-Man comes and goes. If the movie isn't a huge sucess for Sony, I honestly see them just taking a paycheck from Disney for rights to use Spider-Man in their own Marvel Universe films.

It's Spider-Man, it'll be a success.

They're so confident of it that they've already announced a date for Amazing Spider-Man 2; they're not going to be showing up at Marvel's doorstep anytime soon.

What about Ghost Rider? Do anyone think Marvel will regain the rights after the last movie didn't do well?

I think that falls under "so what if they do" since I doubt anyone is in particular hurry to actually invest significant effort into that property.

Whedon smash.

Depending on how it was handled, I don't know if it'd be any more a disaster than it was in the comics themselves. The concept of "mutants" wasn't originally part of Marvel Comics either.

I think it would work if framed in the same way as some of the 'retro' x-men stories casting a darker light on the early days of mutants showing up in the MU. All these costumed adventurers are established and the population is acclimated to the idea. Then these mysterious new people show up, appear to be more super heroes, but something is "wrong" with them. A few of them have physical deformities and word gets around that they're "monsters".

It'd be quite epic to pit the previously established MCU heroes against the x-men, with the mutants being considered villains or at least dangerous anarchists. Made worse by Magneto actually behaving as a legitimate terrorist.

I'm really surprised at the numbers, but not at the same time. Of course this movie was going to be a fucking hit. Cynical internet bullshit actually had me thinking otherwise at one point. Fucking internet.

It's too much of a mess to really be worthwhile honestly. Fox has no reason to give X-men up because they have invested a lot of money and time into building a substantial continuity there already, and honestly as a fan as much as they have screwed up some movies, I like what it is. I wouldn't want to see it all wiped away and rebooted "Marvel" style only to complicated the MCU in potentially negative ways.

They've already established the last 8 decades or so in the MCU, and there really isn't a place to do X-men justice in this continuity. I really don't see it happening in a way where it will be satisfying for everyone. It would be better for audiences to have a good robust X-men movieverse, and a separate MCU. Win-win for everyone involved.

This articles stirring up some controversy:

Girls Guide to Avengers

As your boyfriend probably told you, "The Avengers" is hitting theaters this Friday. And you, dutiful girlfriend, are attending. But you hate action movies and you've never even read a comic book. (Of course, that's not a slight against the girls who actually do read comic books -- i.e. real fans, actual people with varied interests -- but for this, let's just go with the stock view of ladies, ladies!)

Still, there's no need to fret. Beyond the fact that Joss Whedon's action film is Awesome (note the capital A), we've created a streamlined girl's guide to ward off any confusion or mid-movie what's-going-on whisperings.

Including cocktail introductions a la "Bridget Jones's Diary" and boyfriend impressing tidbits, below is everything you need to know about "The Avengers."

The Backstory
Six superheroes who cross paths and come together to rescue the human race from an extraterrestrial annihilation.

The Main Players:
Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr): Quick-witted billionaire; created his superhero suit during a life-threatening kidnapping.
Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans): A hunky supersolider created during WWII, he crashed into the Arctic on a mission, effectively freezing him for 70 years.
The Hulk/Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo): After an experiment oopsie, he was exposed to massive amounts of gamma radiation, thus creating an easily angered green monster.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth): Exiled from his homeland of Asgard, the blue-eyed demi god is charged with protecting Earth from his power-hungry brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner): "The World's Greatest Marksman." 'Nough said.
Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson): Ex-Russian spy, fluent in martial arts, marksmanship and weapons knowledge. She has an affinity for tight outfits. She and Hawkeye are "friends."
Loki (Tom Hiddleston): Loki is Thor's adopted brother. He felt slighted growing up and now he's out for ultimate power. (Typical.)
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson): Head of S.H.I.E.L.D. (see Terms); ring leader of the Avengers initiative.
Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg): S.H.I.E.L.D. agent; Captain America fanboy

Terms:
S.H.I.E.L.D.: Fictional C.I.A., which deals with superhuman dangers. (Stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate.)
Tesseract: All-powerful prism that contains unknown amounts of energy; acts as a space portal, which helps Loki bring an evil alien race to earth.
Asgard: Thor and Loki's extraterrestrial hometown.
Helicarrier: S.H.I.E.L.D.'s flying aircraft carrier, which houses our heroes.
Chitauri: Creepy aliens who team up with Loki to attack earth.

Girl Crush:
Still riding high on Katniss Everdeen's bow-slinging prowess? Well, odds are you'll favor ScarJo, too. (See what I did there?) Her dude-crushing moves are on full display -- there's even a sexy chair number! -- and despite her obvious appeal, here she's far more superhero than damsel in distress.

Boy Crush:
These heroes are so much more than strong! They're sweet and sensitive! Dr. Banner -- when he's not "the other guy" -- is focused on helping others (awww); Captain America calls everyone ma'am; Nothing gets Thor's hammer going like his earthly crush, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman); Hawkeye only has eyes for Black Widow; Iron Man says he's a playboy, but he's totes smitten with his assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

What NOT to say:
"Do you think Scarlett Johansson is pretty?"
"Oh, so it's like the 'New Years Eve' of superhero movies?"
"Who could concentrate on the story with all those biceps?"
"Boys are so weird."

What to say:
"Thank GOD someone did the Hulk correctly."
"I can't wait for 'Thor 2.'"
"Joss Whedon is the man."
"Yeah, you're definitely Iron Man. If he were buffer."

I'm really surprised at the numbers, but not at the same time. Of course this movie was going to be a fucking hit. Cynical internet bullshit actually had me thinking otherwise at one point. Fucking internet.

The Internet said Avatar would bomb. Needlessly to say, the Internet knows nothing. NOSSEENG.

It's The Avengers, not the shitty JL. Of course it was going to be a big hit

Yep, even being conservative, $600m seems like a lock. It may be able to reach the high $600m-$700m by monday depending on china and russia.

So Gaf. I only watched IM, IM2 and Avengers. In what order should I watch Hulk, Thor and Cap?

Pai Pai Master said:
Just watch them in that order. The movies go perfectly together in the order in which they were released.

Perfect :)

If you're curious, Thor, Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2 all take place during a very close timeframe. Certain events in Thor and Hulk are going on at the same time as certain scenes in Iron Man 2, for example. Captain America leads directly into The Avengers.

Yup. Add 20M to those foreign numbers and a 150M domestic opening will mean 600M. Again those are also reasonable numbers and not over-estimations.

With 600M in less than 1.5 weeks, it will need HORRIBLE HORRIBLE legs to crash and not reach 1B.

So... anyone able to tell me if this movie is worth watching in 3D? Or is non-3D fine? Not usually a big fan of 3D movies but if it's well done I'd consider it.

So, just confirmation before I see the movie tomorrow night... There should be an extra scene in the middle of the credits, and then the super secret last minute scene after the credits, right?

There is a reasonable chance that it will hit $500m international by monday alone. Unless it just somehow drop off completely, it should be able to do $700m+ international.

Supposedly Depp will somehow bring it to a halt.

I'm assuming you're seeing it in the US? If so, then yes... mid-credits scene and post-credits scene.

Dark Shadows looks fucking stupid. Why are they even bothering using that name when it's nothing like the original series? How many fans did it even had that would come out to see it?

wait....so 2 extra clips now? One at mid-credits, another at the tradional end-credits?

Probably the only thing more predictable than The Avengers being a huge hit was the legion of trolls the movie would bring out. JUst look at the Top 10 posters in this thread. :lol
