So I have been wanting start reading some classical literature again, so I figured I would start with Homer pick up The Illiad and the Odyssey(last time I read them was in high school). My only question now would be to choose the translation. From what I have seen, my best bets are either the Richmond Lattimore translation, or the Robert Fagles version. Sway me with your mastery of logic and rhetoric please GAF, what do you recommend?

I have not read any English translations, but you should be aware that there are translations in both prose and verse. Think about which type you'd like to read before deciding a translation.

Fagles and Lattimore are two of the finest so you can't really go wrong with either.

Personally, I'm quite fond of Samuel Butler's translation.

Give Alexander Pope's translation a try as well if you have the time.

I dunno about those, but damn, the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War & Peace was SOOOOO much better than the old Penguin Classics shit I had tried to read before.
