I never claimed it wouldn't. I said comparisons are pointless as they don't take the 3d tax into account.

And yes, it is pretty low in line with the inflated tracking. I was expecting in the region of $25 - $30m opening night for it to hit $175m opening weekend.

$250 is a stone cold lock, that's all I care about. Joss is waiting for you.

175 seems a pipe dream if the midnight take is any indication. 155 is what I say.

People weren't working/school was out when HG hit?

The Hunger Game audiences are different. Looking at the biggest midnight opening, it's HP, Twilight, HG. I forgot the link to the article, but it was discussing how woman are more likely to buy tickets in advance and go to these midnight showing. While male tend to be more spur of the moment. We just have to wait till friday numbers.

Oh, what next? You are going to discredit Avatar's records too?

lol

People who predicted 170-180 had the midnights at 15-20M, with 20M being the ceiling. I suggest you take this to the boxoffice forums and get laughed at. ;)

My midnight showing skimped on the trailers. We got Prometheus and Frankenweenie. No TDKR. Nothing else.

It was an IMAX 3D showing in Canada.

BOX OFFICE NUMBERS

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-report-avengers-earns-midnight-records-320371

18.7 million midnight, 0.2 million more than Dark Knight (The number is slightly disappointing if you consider inflation)

The record holder is still Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 which made 43.5 million

The Hunger Games grossed $19.7 million at midnight for reference. it had an opening of 153 million (reference for current inflation)

Had a feeling it wouldn't trouble the record. Inflated tracking strikes again.

$250 is a stone cold lock, that's all I care about. Joss is waiting for you.

lol. I'm genuinely shocked by how well received it's been. I was expected a mediocre movie with some good action.

175 seems a pipe dream if the midnight take is any indication. $155 is what I say.

Yep. All that inflated tracking talk of it beating records, etc is pretty funny in retrospect.

Calm down, dude.

I didn't follow tracking for Avatar, but if they were comparing it to 2d movies that were years old, I most certainly would have had something to say about it.

"Deathly Hallows, Part 2" brought in a whopping $43.5 million at midnight shows last year on its way to its record weekend and ""The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" made $30.3 million in midnight shows on its way to a $138.1 million debut.

More recently, "The Hunger Games" brought in $19.7 million from midnight showings on its way to a $155 million opening weekend. "The Dark Knight" earned $18.5 million at midnight back in 2008, and went on to a $158 million debut weekend.

Seriously, midnight record don't mean everything. Beside HP7.5, midnight showing is all over the place. If you are going by midnight record, then Twilight should have the second highest OW, yet it not even close.

I'm done wasting my time with you here. :)

Terrible terrible terrible midnight numbers, I dont think Avengers will gross 250M domestic.

I'd rather have that than a justice league movie.

Would work better as an animated movie. It'd be too hard to sell the current Batman as a genius strategist who is able to out-think and outplay Supes at almost every turn.

I really want a Silver Surfer movie. A big space epic would translate really well to the big screen and the CG SS in the FF sequel shows they've got the design and look of SS down.

Iron Man 2 scored almost $130M weekend off of a $7.5M midnight. This is the highest midnight number ever for a super hero movie.

Also, if you look at every superhero movie that has opened in the first weekend of May, you will see that they all held better on their first Saturday (compared to their opening Friday) than the Hunger Games did. Different demographics.

For what it's worth, DH2 had almost twice the number of midnight shows as Avengers. HG had a 30% higher presales than Avengers yet the midnight numbers are very close.

And for the record, I dont think TDKR will beat DH2's 43M midnight numbers yet the weekend will be record setting. How does that work now?

I'm inclined to agree on a lower figure because the movie is going to be a tough sell to women and there are other action blockbusters on the horizon (MIB 3, maybe Battleship lol).

Take a few breaths before you meltdown completely.

Jesus.

Dark Shadows should draw the female crowd.

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - $43.5 million
2. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - $30.3 million
3. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $30.1 million
4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $26.3 million
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - $24 million
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - $22.2 million
7. The Hunger Games - $19.7 million
8. The Dark Knight - $18.5 million
9. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - $16.5 million
10. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - $16 million

The film’s big North America opening early Friday morning can be attributed in part to the 3,800 theaters that had midnight screenings.
But The Avengers in Digital 3D, RealD and IMAX 3D still made a gargantuan $18.7 million from about 2,500 North American theaters

I agree with you. Looking at 1-7, what audience do they have in common? lol
Just looked at the midnight opening. HP:DH2 opened at 3800 theater for midnight while Avenger only had 2500 theater for midnight.

Am I the only one who thought
Phil's death scene was awkward as hell? I really liked his character, but I'm going to be honest, it made me want to laugh because it seemed awkward as hell
It was horrible in every possible way.

250M domestic, all I can say.

Tobor, you better bring it with that avatar ;)

He bet with Enigma actually, I'm just rubbing it in. My bet is an even easier lock, since I literally can't lose. All I need to happen is a Joss Whedon movie with "From the director of The Avengers" on the poster, and Good Job Bob gets a Whedon avatar for three months. Lol.

Read it again.

What about my posts even implies a meltdown?

Usually telling other people to calm down and suggesting other people are about to meltdown when there are no signs of any such things happening is a sign that the person saying that is on edge. Just saying. :P

including the midnight opening with friday numbers I see this happening

Friday - 74 million
Saturday - 54 million
Sunday - 42 million

OW:170 million (beating the record for OW by 1 million)

Warner can't even produce a good Superman or Green Lantern movie, and they can't get Wonder Woman or Flash off the ground at all, and you actually want them to make a Justice League movie? Really? Lol.

Yeah, would Warner even take the time to get the characters known for a JL movie. Avengers worked because they were able to make much more household names out of the characters. People know Captain America and Hulk, but Thor and Iron Man weren't exactly big name superheroes to the average, non-comic reading, movie goer.

The money will be more evenly spread through the weekend and not completely blown on the first showing.

And as for Avengers not having a record midnight, I wonder if many other theaters did similar stupid stuff like mine, like not having any 2D showings and only one 3D showing (with extra charge for reserve seating) for presale so people just ignored it and are waiting for the weekend. The full Friday numbers will be more telling though.

WAT

Bob bet with me (one month avatar) that Avengers wont cross 890M WW. Dude is in for some abuse.

There are pretty obvious signs he was having a meltdown of some kind.

The exaggerated posting style, the use of capitals exclamation marks, etc. Classics signs of someone who is about to or is losing control.

My theatre did the same. One IMAX 3D screening at midnight. Completely sold out. They even had to bring in a couple chairs from the dining area because they oversold the tickets. I don't know if they would have sold out two midnight showings, but surely their was more demand than what they were supplying.

I think it's possible to de an ensemble JLA without the origins movies, but it's far more difficult. GL bombing makes it even more difficult.

I think WB thought they had the next Kevin Feige in Geoff Johns, and now they're back at square one.

Saw it last night.

Awesome, best time at the movies in years.

Can't believe how ballsy Marvel is by setting up future movies with the extra scene that they showed.

Was there really a second post credits scene? I was told there was only the one in the middle.

There is only one in the middle for all of us outside of the US who got to see the film a week early. For US audiences there is an extra scene after the credits as a consolation for suffering a week of extra hype.

Just got back, was not ready for DAT HULK swag!

So many good one liners
Thor: Loki is my brother
Widow: Your brother just killed 60 people
Thor: Step brother

LOL

And

Hulk fucking Loki up

So good.

Captain America was awesome as well.

The concession stand at my theater was nuts. All the managers were working it and commenting about not staffing enough. Basically they didn't know so many people would show. I know that early Thursday there was only the 2D, 3D, and LieMAX screen showing it. But when I went to the concessions at 1130 and heard them say this I look up and saw that they added 3 or so more screens total and people were still pouring in the front door.

THEY MUST BE POINTLESS!!!1
Really? You cant even get obvious sarcasm.

My only mistake was trying to reason with you.

I'm so glad I didn't bet. 4 weeks ago I was figuring Avengers for an uder-performer. Now I am a true believer. Reviews and WOM are all strong, and that will make or break a movie like this.

Saw the midnight showing last night. This movie was a lot of fun and I was super impressed with the chemistry between the actors. May go see it again. (Saw it in 2D).
Pumped for a sequel with Thanos!

My city has a large Lebanese population, so our shwarmas are cooked to their style. I haven't tried every ethnic variation, but I find Lebanese cuisine to be the best Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine.
As someone of Lebanese descent, I was excited to see Shwarma mentioned, lol.

Is it tomorrow yet? lol

For point of reference I left right when
Cap and Iron Man capture Loki

3D wasn't awful, but it wasn't great, and I'm happy I'm not paying to see it in 3D.

Best nothing I've ever spent for a movie!

It's fucking amazing so far.

If you say so, bro.

I suspect now that you've calmed down, you're trying to spin it as sarcasm. It's cool though, tracking is serious business when one is as invested as you are.

From the reviews and people that I know that went to the midnight showing, there will be massive legs. Everyone loved it.
