Thor is a pretty good movie though

but it seems GAF thinks otherwise
'Pretty good' or 'ok' doesn't cut it if you're comparing to Avengers. My point was everyone was expecting this movie to be on the same lines of CA and Thor, but it's turned out to be MUCH more.

All you need to do is look at the numbers in comparison to realize they're on different planes.

Guys

Just think about it

We saw a movie with Hulk, Thor, Captain America AND Iron Man

All at the same time.

And it worked.

wow
I know, if reveal years ago you had told my comic book nerd self this was going to happen, and end up good, I wouldn't have believed it.

I do have to say

As a proud card holder of the Joss Whedon hateclub...

Im very surprised at what he pulled off. Like Solo said, he really nailed the script for the most part, and not to mention the humour worked as well, the movie is paced rather well, and the action is also very well set up, with great payoffs.

It terms of box office this film is gonna make bank. The 11 o'clock showing I was at was filled and there was a line of 50 people just waiting to get in to that theater when I walked out and they have it playing on 5 screens.

"Solo's been compromised
."

Solo reference made me lose it.

"Want to be like Mike" Yet look like Mario Van Pebbles. lol

I just got in from the movie and have to turn right round and go back out for a few hours, but I just had to comment on The Avengers first.

My god, these are strange days. How in the fuck did Joss fucking Whedon of all people write and direct a movie that is so, soooooooooooo much better than the first 5 movies? It was like, completely amazing. The dialogue, character banter/interaction and the chemistry between the actors was absolutely fantastic and a joy to watch from start to finish. Without a doubt it carried the film. Hulk absolutely stole the movie, but every character had a bevy of great scenes and "fuck yeah!" moments, and it all felt so natural to me. It was fucking hilarious too, perhaps the funniest superhero movie ever. The crowd was absolutely howling at a few key moments. On top of that, Whedon actually did an absolutely incredible job of conceiving and directing the action sequences, of which there were several standout ones. Throw in some incredible CG work and breathless pacing, and I was a very happy camper.

Better than the previous 5 movies combined and the first great movie out of Marvel Studios.

Spider-Man 2 > Batman Begins > The Avengers > The Dark Knight > the rest

Solo loved it? We're through the looking glass here, people.

Which is all the more impressing me, since this his second feature length (and the first I've seen from him, personally). Tight Direction, solid writing and superb pacing are no easy feats.

Ultimates style?
Hey Hulk! Those guys on the spacemopeds said that you like boys.
Haha, Ultimates Hulk was the best. Yeah, they could have went that route more in fish-baiting him into beating everyone, but it wasn't that necessary to include in the mix of chaos, tbh.

Solos list is great but get Spider Man 2 the hell out of there. That movie was still benefiting from the collective belief that superhero movies were crap. So every competent contradiction was venerated.

Xia awesome job. There are still some slight aesthetics I love about Nortons Hulk but you guys nailed it.

One thing I was disappointed with that they mentioned once then forgot about:
when Ironman and Thor are fighting in the forest, Ironman's power output gets boosted 400% when Thor hits him with lightning. I was expecting them to do that again in the final battle but it never happened.

That's a very cool idea. Being "disappointed" it wasn't in there? Not sure about that.

Btw, personally I always believed in what Marvel was doing. I was probably one of the few people here who defended the SHIELD stuff in Iron Man 2, while everyone said it bogged the movie down. That might be true for someone who doesn't care about what Marvel is doing with the larger plan, but from that moment, I knew that Marvel was serious about building a movie universe which doesn't have to feel isolated with each movie, but rather try to flow characters and plot threads between movies, all leading up to a major crossover event.

It's how it is done in the comics, and that is how they wanted to execute it in film. It's a totally insane idea, but goddamn they pulled it off and I'm STILL grinning about it. :)

Thank you Bruce

Spiderman 2 is, dare I say, the most overrated comic book film and does not hold up well. Spidey 1 still holds up damn fine though. See my rewatch thread from a few months back.

Definitely, I was always okay with it, and now it's clear that the payoff for all that has been totally worth it and more. I've always wanted them to be able to just casually mention stuff that's going on in the larger Marvel universe like they do in the comics.*

*Editor's Note: See Iron Man 2

Um, i'm still processing what I watched but...

The Avengers will go down as THE greatest comic book film adaptation yet released

Yes it's even better than the Dark Knight

Whedon knocked out of the park. He made a film for comic book nerds. Not teenagers. Not couples. Not focus groups. Not the fucking Academy.

This film is for everyone out there who has loved comics since they were a kid.

This whole mentality that one good movie has to be better than another good movie is ridiculous. Both are good and entertain me, I'm happy.

Kind of off-topic, but seeing the newest Spider-Man trailer attached to this film, sold me on the movie. Holy fuck it looks epic.

It was strange. When I saw the Imax version it had the first Amazing Spiderman trailer instead. Didn't realize it till I saw the new trailer online today.

cosign. I was grinning and nodding to myself every time the SHIELD guys were onscreen.

I didn't want to jump in on that post but now that you mentioned it I have to agree. Spiderman 2? No freakin way. That movie doesn't hold up at all these days with the current bad-assery in superhero movies.

One of my favorite things about the movie was how Stark and Banner immediately became bros and bonded over science lol.

I haven't seen Spidey 2 in years, but the train fight is pretty cool, and I think what makes it stand out is that Doctor Octopus is a really ironic and cool villain, and they pulled him off really well.

Spiderman 2 is awesome, and the best marvel movie to date.

It is - dare I say - the first superhero movie where the villain wasn't corny and well developed.

...and so many awesome scenes (doc ock hospital, bank fight, train scene, spidey stuck in elevator and most importantly rain drops keep falling on my head!)

Edit: damn you duckroll, for beating me to say the exact same!

I find it funny that Solo still holds up Spider-Man 2, despite his dislike for TDK. For me both are the same. They hold up terribly on rewatch. S-M2 is definitely worse than TDK but both just get worse and worse with each subsequent rewatch. Terrible lasting value.

Both movie are also pretty similar in that the only thing worth a damn in either of them is the villain, doc ock, and the joker.

One of my favorite things about the movie was how Stark and Banner immediately became bros and bonded over science lol.

It's pretty funny because they don't even really like each other very much. Their personalities are just so ill suited to be put together, but yet they're both just so geeky about technology that they can put all that aside to just talk tech. It's awesome.

If Whedon isn't directing the sequel then I'm going to flip shit.

You know, I never thought I would ever in my life actually say the words "I really hope Joss Whedon directs the next movie too." for anything. But here I am. Shit, Whedon, you son of a bitch! :)

If Whedon isn't directing the sequel then I'm going to flip shit.
The only way he doesn't direct the sequel is if he dies before they start on it. Otherwise, there's no chance in hell he isn't going to be involved again. Especially after this success (and his other recent successes).

What @ better than Dark Knight or Batman begins. Avengers was alright and had lots of decent action, but let's not go crazy.

Final, definitive, irrefutable list: Batman Begins > Dark Knight > Spiderman 2 > Iron Man > Spiderman 1 > X-Men 2 > Avengers > Hulk > Captain America > X-Men > Superman Returns > Iron Man 2 > Spawn > X Men First Class > Fantastic Four 1/2 > Incredible Hulk > Blade >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thor = Green Lantern

Renner was a bit too stone-faced as Hawkeye
even after he was freed
, but he had a lot of badass moments. I'm more of a fan of wise-cracking cheery Hawkeye, but I guess we have too much of that on the team already and they went more with the Ultimate Hawkeye personality. He surprised me though and I do think he's a good fit for the role in the end, and had some really cool shit to do.

I love the Nolan Batman films but this is why I think it's impossible and ultimately stupid to just keep going back and forth with list warz for these movies. Everyone has really differing tastes. I definitely gravitate more towards the brighter, funnier and clearly more comic-booky Marvel movies. I'm getting tired of the dark and brooding Batman movies and I really hope Man of Steel doesn't follow suit just because the Nolan films have done so well. I don't know if I can take much more SUPER SERIOUS stuff when it comes to comic book movies, but these don't come off as mindless popcorn movies to me either, they have a lot of heart and there's clearly a lot of talent being poured into them.

For me, the lighthearted nature of the Avengers movies, the witty dialogue and absolutely nerdtastic fanservice that truly shows how much they appreciate Marvel lovers...I go apeshit for that stuff.

Thor? Thor suffers the exact same problem (Destroyer one punch KO is totally unsatisfying). Aside from that it's completely epic. It has great dialogue and a solid premise.

I actually liked that part... It makes the film special : it's not the standard super-hero movie where an innocent guy gets new powers and struggle to master them and fight the big bad evil. Thor is a god, a very powerful one, and that's his main problem (it turned him arrogant, selfish, impulsive...). The Destroyer scene conveys that idea : once he has his full powers, he is unstoppable. Only he had to deserve them, because might is not everything (actually the weakest part is the way he got them back). That's why he spends the whole movie powerless.

Hmmm... speaking of going crazy... :P

Spider-Man 2 was the best movie out of the Raimi trilogy. If anything, the first movie was over-hyped. Spider-man 1 had a great first hour before dropping the ball in the second half. I enjoyed my experience watching Spider-man 2 the entire time I was in the theatre. Same thing was true for the first two X-men movies. First was ok. Second was great.

The thrill is too new for the Avengers to declare it my favourite Marvel movie, but it is definitely in my top 4 with Spider-man 2, X-men 2 and the first Iron Man.

Holy crap so much no, especially with regard to the laughable "lowest tier." Let's just stop doing this altogether.
Why do so many people on this forum dislike Whedon? I really don't understand it. The guy's resume is pretty damn good if you ask me.
*shrug* Always liked him myself. Never really dug Buffy or Dollhouse but I love every other property he's touched.

Why the hell do people want to play Sophie's Choice with these movies.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Someone post the damn BTTF gif. Spiderman 2 still holds up fine, same with the first.

My top 5 right now (need to give Avengers a few more viewings/time):

1. Dark Knight
2. Spiderman 2/Avengers
3. Spiderman 2/Avengers
4. Iron Man 1
5. Spiderman 1

No one is going to agree with any of these lists posted. 10 years from now we are going to have people posting lists of 50 different comic book related films in order from best to worst.
