You really shouldn't, though. It's plastic cards. Some are expansives but still tolerable for a non-competitive hobby. Black Lotus/Power 9/Alpha Beta is just an irrational huge waste of money. And even then they allow proxies of those at tournaments generally.

You could probably get alot more of fun out of boosters boxes that would cost you the rough equivalent of a small couple of these cards.

Well, sure. If you want to be rational and shit...

Don't they allow proxies only if you own the cards and have them off to the side? So you don't have to risk damaging them by shuffling them?

Depends on the tournament but most vintage events will allow a certain number of proxies in a deck without owning the cards. It's usually only like 5 or so I think, but I don't play vintage so I could be wrong.

Griselbrand is actually rather hot and will stay that way, he is a great re-animator target with an immediate impact.
Entreat the Angels is like an 18 dollar card right now, it can be broken.

True... But as high as he is now? I would think he has to drop at least a little.

So....found a seller who has the full playsets of Black Lotus, dual lands and a ton of the Alpha-Beta power cards. Like, 4 time walks.

I'm about to piss the wife off really, really badly.

Buy the duals at least. Revised duals are probably the best investments in Magic. Pretty much never to go down in price and easy to unload if you ever need the money.

Not enough guilt trips :p

I can fix that. :D

But from what I grasp, he is a casual player, who likes to have fun with his wife and friends on any given evening. Does he needs the lands? No. Can he buy like two boxes of boosters for the price of a set of ONE of these types of lands? Yes. So what is the best investment for him?

It's all plastic cards. If he was a serious, "I-make-my-money-out-of-MTG-tournament" fellow, then such an expenditure would be justified because it'd contribute to helping him win and thus make money. But a casual player? What is the use of spending so much money on them lands? What is the use of spending so much money on the Power 9? To better crush his wife and game table with them? What a brilliant investment! :D

It's also why I trade away all the rare non-effects lands I open in boosters at my local game shop. I don't need/want them when I play with my friends. Vital in competitions, not so much elsewhere.

Well, actually, you're a bit wrong. I also like the collection aspect and have tried my hand at tournament play.

In all honesty, I'm likely not going to buy most of the cards. But I WILL buy the dual lands. I will also start tourney play.

You have somewhere that has regular legacy tourneys?

Our card shop was able to sell us 2 boxes last night and some fat packs. Man, one of my buddies came out on WAY top. Never seen such a great pull. This is what he got.

Entreat the Angels - $20
Tamiyo, the Moon Sage - $39.99
Temporal Mastery $39.99
Vexing Devil X2 -$14.99 ea
Zealous Conscripts X2 $2.49 ea
Craterhoof Behemoth $2.99
Wolfir Silverheart X2 $1.49 ea
Descendants’ Path $1.99
Sigarda, Host of Herons $14.99

Lucky devil. With the Vexing Devil he pulled on prerelease and trading for one, he already has a play set of them. All I managed to pull was Entreat the Angels, Bonfire, Cavern of Souls, and another foil Angel of Jubilation. I also got a foil Silverblade Paladin for buying a box but that doesn't count. Not too bad of a pull but it looks way dull to my buddy's pull.

Playing against a set of Vexing Devils, my thoughts are while it does hurt to take 4 dmg right away, it was hard for my buddy to sustain w/o a body on the field. Silverblade Paladin was awesome every time he came out. I will definitely get more of SP when I can. Riders of Gavony was underwhelming due to RDW having all sorts of creature type in it's deck. Definitely think it's a sideboardable card though. May still remain in the main deck but I need a few more matchups to decide.

My deck look something like this:
4 Champion of the Parish
4 Doomed Traveler
2 Thalia
4 Grand Abolisher
2 Mirran Crusaders
1 Silverbalde Paldin
2 Field Hunter
1 Riders of Gavony
2 Angel of Jubilation

3 Righteous Blow
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Call to Serve *my sub for Angelic Destiny since I don't have any :(
1 Entreat the Angels
1 Terminus
2 O-Rings
1 Faithless Shield

4 Glacial Fortress
2 Moorland Haunts
1 Cavern of Souls
15 Plains
*Would add Seachrome Coast if I had any

Lots of room for improvement, but that's what I threw together with what I had last night.

Alright, I haven't drafted in over a year (since Besieged) but my friends and I won enough packs at the pre-release that we're doing Avacyn Restored tonight. Here's hoping I'm not too rusty.

I can fix that. :D

Just to destroy his wife should be reason enough!

This is why I'm so hesitant buying a box. I'm right on the edge because it's a cool feeling but I know the box won't be as good as I want it to be. Plus it's $120 after tax at my LGS and I want to wait until it's $100 on Amazon like it usually is.

So I don't know anything about Magic (aside from the fact that you "tap" lands or something) and I'm not really interested in learning or anything, but my dad used to play a lot and I loved to check out some of his cards, look at the cool art, and read the awesome flavor text. They were almost always clever or interesting in some way. I was always fond of Fodder Cannon's text.

What are some of your guys' favorite flavor texts?

Flavor text hasn't been really interesting for a while I feel.

Which is ironic considering how much they amped the role of flavor in this game.

I do love the flavor text on Selfless Cathar, but then from an overall flavor perspective I think that's my favorite card in the block. Every single aspect of this card, from the art to the mechanic to the text is just spot on.

That's a pretty tasty box, great trade bait in there. I'd flip Tamiyo, Temporal Mastery, the Devils, and Entreat for Caverns, Sigarda, Snapcaster, and anything else that I could use for decks. Hoping to do a lot of flipping tonight at the release tourney, gotta get rid of Scars and M12!

Really regretting not picking up Conscripts @0.49. It's a future $5-$10 card, IMO.

so... how did this thread dodge the great subforum migration anyway?
I think it helps that we're not particularly insular - newbies are welcomed and never go ignored. Plus, we don't randomly slag other users who've never participated in the thread.

It seriously makes me sad how dead trading is at my LGS that I can't flip stuff like that at all. :/ And it's already down to like $10 per devil on ebay so it doesn't seem worth it.

Edit: Well not all the sports threads slag newbies, Ijust think no one cares for the time being but you're all jinxing it just talking about it.

In the long run you got the better deal, assuming you both keep your cards. Cavern is going to see play in all formats and should be on side board at least for all decks. 3rd set syndrome will ensure it stays high. I'm thinking of trading a bunch of my rotating standard stuff for every one I come across.

Just won my cube draft finals on game 3. Guy has Avenger of Zendikar and a bunch of tokens out. All he has to do is a draw a land and he wins.

He draws for turn, no land. Attacks me, I block what I can. Second main he plays and cracks a Mind Slaver.

On my turn, he completely devastates my board. He wins next turn.. except for the fact that he has about 3 seconds left on his clock when my turn ends. He ends up losing on his attack phase because he doesnt have enough time to get to the combat damage step.

And I laugh all the way to the (time spiral draft set) bank.

Here's my W/B deck:

Creatures
4x Champion of the Parish
2x Doomed Traveler
3x Mirran Crusader
2x Blade Splicer
2x Hero of Bladehold

Enchantments
4x Honor of the Pure
2x Intangible Virture
3x Oblivion Ring
2x Angelic Destiny

Planesalker
2x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
1x Elspeth Tirel

Sorcery
4x Gather the Townsfolk
4x Lingering Souls
1x Revoke Existence

Lands
4x Isolated Chapel
1x Cavern of Souls
3x Swamps
16x Plains

Sideboard
1x Go for the Throat
1x Celestial Purge
2x Surgical Extraction
1x Revoke Existence
2x Doomed Traveler (possible replacement Restoration Angel)
2x Blade Splicer (possible replacement Angel of Jubilation)
1x Doom Blade
2x Angelic Destiny
2x Hero of Bladehold
1x Divine Offering

I'm thinking of putting in Restoration Angel or Angel of Jubilation for either the Doomed Traveler or Blade Splicer. I only have 1 of each. Gonna get 4 Vault of the Archangel next week. I still need 2 Intangible Virtue. Need to get Cavern of Souls later, but waiting if it will drop. It's too high atm.

I wish I had a playset of Vexing Devil for my red deck.

OMG Mono White in DotP 09 is bullshit second round. She gets a first strike, double strike flying monster while none of my decks (besides Blue which is weak) can do shit against that. EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

This game cheats at times, I swear. :|

Nevermind. The Flamewave Invoker with a lucky land being drawn ("PLEASE PLEASE JUST GIVE ME THE LAND!") and Prodigal Pyromancer chipping away her life from the sidelines while making sure she didn't gain too much life from those stupid life gain artifacts saved my ass as a 2 life win. Yay.

Now I'm having issues with Garruk and he's like the last one before I can start unlocking new decks. :/

Ended up buying a box, though I kept telling myself I woudln't with this set. An ok box, truth be told. I got a Cavern of Souls, Griselbrand, the cast from exile sphinx( I guess its a gryphon but the art looks like a weird sphinx to me), the 10 CMC green mythic, a foil silverblade paladin, and Malignus. I got one Conscripts, a Terminus and the R/W land and R/U land. Otherwise it was a bunch of junk. My luck had to run out at some point, the past 5 sets I've managed to get at least 1 of every planeswalker at either the pre-release and or buying a box on the day it comes out, along with most of the other money cards.

Popped my two boxes, not great could be worse.

Japanese Tibalt , avacyn, Wolfrir Silverheart foil and normal, alchemist's refuge, lighthouse ,Bruna, Light of Alabaster,Angel of Jubilation english Cavern of Souls, entreat of angels,Griselbrand, Restoration Angel, Bruna, Light of Alabaster, Angel of Jubilation, Terminus, Bonfire of the Damned, Slayers' Stronghold, foil Ulvenwald Tracker ....various others obviously.

Tomorrow we are having a box draft so hopefully my pulls in that and the league starting on tuesday will fill in some holes.

Nothing more disheartening then being mana-flooded, at five life, casting Amass the Components and drawing three Plains.

Other then that Avacyn draft was pretty fun tonight. I ended up putting together a W/R/u angels thing that did pretty well, and I walked away with three rares that I cared about and would have pursued anyway: Bruna, Desolate Lighthouse and Infinite Reflection. The only money in our pool was a single Cavern of Souls, so we were all pretty happy that we decided to draft with them instead of cracking them

Played FNM tonight. Had a lot of trouble against red. Stromkirk Noble with Stormblood berserker or Vexing Devil. Don't forget Thunderous Wrath and Brimstone Volley. Not great to play a human deck against them. Gotta work on my sideboard. Can't complain too much. Got a free promo foil Restoration Angel.

RDW will fold to Timely Reinforcements. Vexing Devil really isn't that good.

Also in tokens you should be main decking at least 3 Blade Splicers, they go well with the Restoration Angel as well.

Went pretty far in draft, went final four. Pulled a Grislebrand, Avacyn, Bruna and Tamiyo from the packs I bought. Which is funny, cause I will use literally NONE of those. Only got 1 Cavern of Souls....sigh.

I went W/R humans in the draft. Still convinced this is the deck for AVR.

Yeah, there are some sick red humans for Limited. Throw in a couple of the Vampires and you have a brutal early game.

And I know f0rk hates it with a passion, but I'm still a fan of vexing devil. I'm a fan of direct damage cards though like Bump in the Night. They're always a nice surprise.

Well my booster box didn't come yesterday so I got impatient and hopped out for a fat pack. Hoo boy, glad I did. Temporal Mastery, Craterhoof Behemoth, Descendants' Path, Reforge the Soul and Devastation Tide.

Somehow between my prerelease packs and the fat pack I almost have a full set of druids' repositories...not sure what the chances of that would be...hopefully I can find some use for them. :P

edit: also finally noticed miracles have a special border, making them a bit easier to spot as you draw them.

Me and my friend sat down and opened 3 boxes and a fatpack between us. Things looked down when I did a 4 mythic box, then things became worse when my friend did a staggering 2 mythic box. Things were compounded by opening 4 archwing dragons and 3 zealous conscripts in one box.

The 4 mythics I pulled were good tho, Grisel, Temporal Mastery, Entreat the Angels, and Bonfire of the Damned. My friend also now has 3 Tamiyos. Some seriously staggering statistical improbabilities occurred last night.
