I'm not even a comic book guy and I would totally be down with seeing them take Batman in a much different direction like Batman Beyond after Nolan's done.

Batman Beyond adaptation, let's go crazy on this bitch.

Hulk making a guest appearance in Iron Man 3 might be nice since he gets along so well with Stark, but if they do that they better keep it a secret and not put it in the trailers.

Actually I'd quite like it if Hulk was a mainstay character in the Iron Man series instead of getting his own series.

my theater was sold out of the 2d showing. this just does not happen around here. i was shocked. the movie really is pretty huge.

The real winners with these box office numbers are international audiences, since studios are finally realizing that releasing their shit to us first should be in their interest. :D

My 320pm Friday showing wasn't sold out. It was only around half full, maybe slightly less. However, when we got out at 6pm the line for the 710pm showing was already all the way outside the building.

I think not as many people went to midnight/afternoon showings because school is still in and people had to go to work. I have no doubt that all the evening showings were sold out.

If the movie is good :P

80.5M for Friday means 61.5M without the midnights. Kids are still in school, so Saturday could stay even or slightly increase from that number (the 61M, not the 80M).

Yeah it'd be nice if Avengers started a trend...although I think it was done to get one more week in before the euro dominates people's lives.

$80M? Goddamn.

I'm starting to lose faith in the "TDKR will outgross Avengers everywhere" thought now. Will it out gross it anywhere might be the new conversation....

I really hope they take it in that exact direction.

Nolan is wrapping up his Batman films with perfect timing, I think, as the Marvel movies and especially Avengers now are turning audience expectations and tastes back to a heightened "comic book" reality. TDKR should provide a fantastic juxtaposition to this in the same year as Avengers but I think the grim-and-gritty well has run dry, and the next Batman cannot be nearly as morose as Nolan's (and even Burton's) while avoiding the campiness of Schumacher's.

Assuming I've interpreted that correctly, Loki basically calls her
a whiny cunt
in a PG-13 movie.

And that's why Joss Whedon is a genius.

Just watched this yesterday night and wow, the greatest ensemble of super heroes ever! So many epic moments and funny bits, absolutely fantastic movie! Can't wait to get this on bluray!

I watched it in 3D and the line was so long. After i left i saw another huge line... Just for the next 3D showing. There are even more showings of the 2D and XD version inthe same theater.

I still stand at my prediction of $180 million! the Avengers!

I remember people refusing to eat crow in regards to Avatar's success, trying to find excuses for the single-digit percentage drops, it was pretty ridiculous. :lol

There were a lot more people surprised at Avatar's success. Least with Avengers, a lot of people knew it would do well.

I think the strategy works out great. The hype that the international box office creates can be quite impressive, and all of that acts as a final marketing push for the NA release. I think studios are coming to the realization that good press from magazines simply isn't enough. Nothing generates buzz like the actual global internet fandom praising the movie.

First mover advantage. There was no reason for TDKR to take the final release window of the three major super hero films this summer.

Somebody needs to dig up the posts from that guy who expected something like a 50M opening, and 125M total. There was more than one prediction of a <$100M opening on these forums as well.

I'm too lazy/embarrassed to look up what I guessed but I was definitely pessimistic on it up until a week or two ago, I probably would have taken the under on $120 million opening. I quietly ate crow when the international reviews came in though, I knew it was going to be a much bigger deal after that.

Reading all this WB JL speculation and the financial (& critical) success of the Avengers makes me laugh. When Geoff Johns was asked at Comic Con about a connected movie verse he said something to the effect DC did it's own thing and their individual characters being strong enough for individual mega franchises or some BS.

I think Waller was placed in GL to setup that possibility but the failure of GL put an end to that. It's all up to MoS now. DC could also ignore GL 1 like Hasbro is ignoring GI JOE.

If you haven't seen it yet, you HAVE to watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk

It's a bit long, but it's worth every second. It says a lot about John Peters. :)

I watched that whole Kevin Smith thing was like 4 hours long on EPIX, my mind was fucking blasted (if blown signifies, shock amazement, blasted is the implosion and you brain just committing suicide), when he said all that shit

Same here. It was absolutely packed. We got there an hour early and there was already ~30 people in line for the 8:30 2D showing. I had to park over a 1/4 mile from the damn theater!

It was all worth it though as it was purely fuck awesome. I have to see it again this weekend just to take it all in.

BTW I need some help. I was never very much into the Avengers when I was kid tho I knew who they were. I've watched/own all the current Marvel movies on Blu-ray so I'm definitely a fan now. Can anyone recommend some graphic novels that delve into the backstory and universe of these characters? I especially want to get to know
Thanos since he looks like such a badass in the credits!

Had GL been a huge hit, I think Johns would have been put in a Kevin Feige style role at WB. He'd be running the properties. He shit the bed of course, so he's lucky they let him stay in charge of the comics.

My predictions were way too low as well. I think I thought $150/$350 domestic, and something embarrassingly wrong for the worldwide total.

However there is a difference between that and predicting that a film with 4 years of build up would do less than the Incredible Hulk because you thought the trailer was bad/hate Whedon.

TDK got a boost because of Ledger's death and performance. TDKR isn't going to have that extra hype going for it.

I still think Batman will probably outgross Avengers WW when all is said and done.

I think Avengers will also benefit more from repeat viewings than TDKR. Everyone will rush out to see TDKR (so much so that even if Avengers does break the opening record I can see TDKR breaking it again 2 months later), but its the end of the series and looks sombre as fuck. Not sure if thats something people will want to see again and again. Conversely, I can see people going to Avengers multiple times.

On the other hand though, TDKR has MUCH less competition after its release than Avengers does.

So who knows?

Doing some PC surgery right now on two towers, transferring a HD and then about a TB of data, and I have the soundtrack blasting from my main system. Going to see this again in 3D this afternoon and taking my 10 year old nephew who reads the comic. His mind will be melted from the awesomsauce.

I have a feeling TDKR will not do as well as TDK box-office wise.

$500 million domestic is just an insane box office number. I wouldn't predict TDKR exceeding that because you can't honestly predict anything exceeding that (except for maybe Avatar 2, and even then). That number is never ever a sure thing and requires a certain kind of luck and alchemy to hit, regardless of the movie.

Man, to be 10 and get to see this movie. Lucky kids.

I KNOW. I actually really appreciate Whedon making this as broadly-appropriate as possible while still keeping it intense.
One moderately violent death
, almost completely bloodless and I think Fury says "ass" once? I would DEFINITELY take an eight-year-old to see this and maybe a five- or six-year-old depending on how worldly they were. I saw Empire Strikes Back when I was three and ROTJ when I was six and I'd say they were on par or worse in terms of violence. It's really close to PG save for the cumulative amount of smashy violence and action, I guess, and the one spoilered bit.

Saw it again this week, still awesome. I noticed the slow start more, the opening scenes are definitely the worst part of the movie imo, but still we all had a fantastic time. Reminded me of my favourite line from Thor,
"You mortals are so petty...and tiny."
:D
