I agree, because the dark knight wasn`t THAT good of a movie. The hype was bigger than the movie and i`m pretty sure the third one won`t do the same numbers.

Hype doesn't account for the repeat business.

If it was hype only, it would have had an exceptional opening week and dropped like a brick, as most movies that rely solely on hype do.

Well.

It was big, it was loud, and it was a mess, which was basically what I was expecting. But in spite of my ambivalence, seeing Captain America and Iron Man fight Loki in front of the Terminal Tower was pretty cool.

Really, just seeing the Cleveland bits was worth the price of admission.

Doubt he could kill off a character like Rhodes unless Marvel Studios wanted it.

He's already signed back on.

I didn't enjoy his performance in IM2 either but he's generally a good actor, maybe they'll make it work this time around.

They don't have to kill him. Just have him wade into the new threat overconfident and get his ass handed to him, then he can sit in a coma for the rest of the movie while Tony gets revenge. Shane Black is an 80’s guy, he can work with that.

the good thing about the humor was that it wasn't too cheesy.
the hulk punching thor
was a little cheesy but for the most part, things were genuinely funny.

fury to loki:
"let me know if 'real power' wants a magazine or something.

also, slow scenes in this movie were pretty great. thor and loki talking on the mountain; rogers and stark talking
after coulson's death
these were great scenes.

Some thoughts after watching the film:

Whedon absolutely nails the interactions between the characters. The helicarrier scenes are the best part of the film.

For the most part, the characters all get good representation, even Black Widow, which surprised me.

The crowd went crazy during the Hulk scenes. However, I was disappointed that
Hulk didn't have more interactions with the other Avengers in the final battle. Maybe it's because I've been watching Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes, but I would have liked Hulk to have more lines of dialogue.

Gweneth Paltrow was absolutely smoking hot. Barefoot in those short shorts, yum. She definitely has a softer edge to her character after being so irritable and bitchy in Iron Man 2.

The final battle was underwhelming. The aliens didn't seem all that threatening. I would have liked more powerful ground and air vehicles instead of all the infantry.

And finally, the post credits scene reminds me of this:

Can't wait to watch this again.

I have no clue if this has been discussed or not, but why the fuck did they call it "Marvel's Avengers Assemble" in the UK?

It sounds like a terrible translation of a foreign title.

500 million dollars is gonna be tough with the competition coming up.

I think 500 million is achievable. Earlier in the morning, I was speaking on behalf of TDK and TDKR, but even I have to admit an 80 million dollar opening day is insane and with an A+ Cinemascore, plenty of bets are off.

I think Battleship is gonna get crushed and Dark Shadows will do alright but it won't make much of a dent on the Avengers. MIB3 will sadly probably be the first movie to actually impact the Avengers but by then, the train will be at full steam. I don't think TDKR will match The Avengers' opening weekend because of the 3D factor, but 180 million is achievable TDKR and then add in summer weekdays and hopefully good WOM, both could do 500 million. Which is insane. 2012 box office is looking to be the year we dreamed it would be.

The theater I saw it in last night was a piece of shit ghetto theater that people generally avoid in order to not be stabbed/shot while watching their movie and it's usually empty. Last night was the first time I've ever seen the theater so full they were turning people away at the box office.

When I realized that the Battleship trailer was for Battleship I honestly couldn't stop laughing during the entire thing. Other people were wondering what the hell was wrong with me until the title popped up at the end.

I don't know how Universal ever approved the film and gave it a 200 million + budget.

And while it did ok internationally initially, Avengers is sucking all the air out of the room.

By the way, Speedymanic and I did have a ban bet on this. Found it in an old thread:

Hell, I'll take it further. I'll bet a one month ban that it doesn't break the $200m barrier in the US. That's how confident I am that it's not going to happen.

Your funeral, bro. Easy money.

We'll see. Opening weekend will set the pace - 60-70m and it will be downhill from there.

Saw the film last night, and it was spectacular! High action, comedy, and drama tied together with a great cast! With the direction they intend to take this, I'm not sure if they'll be able to top this first film. Crowd was great, except for a group of ladies in front of us who were squealing and giggling throughout the movie, at inappropriate parts (mainly lusting after evans and hemsworth).

So many great one-liners, delivered perfectly. Gonna watch this again tomorrow!

LOL I remember this

Does today's audience have ADD/ADHD? The attention span of a goldfish? I CAN'T believe people are really thinking that Steve
hands the $10 buck to Fury because, you know, he being from the 40's and all that as a tip to the black dude?

SERIOUSLY????? It was just minutes before that Fury mockingly bets $10 to Steve since the later says "nothing can surprise him anymore" ....... jeez...

welp got to see it,....movie was the truth. Special shout out to Tom Hiddleson who was the glue that held it together. Not only was he evil but he kept a hint of "mischief" about him which is the core of Loki bravo good sir. This summer is gonna be crazy, Spiderman and Batman look great too.

They did a great thing using both the ultimates and original enemies to craft an origin story for the team.

That shot in the trailer of the camera circling the Avengers and the Hulk roaring was soooo fucking good in the movie. Got major goosebumps. Goddamn the movie just kicked ass

Yeah, it seemed laughably bad in the trailer, but in the movie, its placement is fucking perfect and works great.

What? Where have you seen this happening?

Solo liked a Joss Whedon movie?

I'm out. I have seen it all. Peace.

Oh man. I'd totally forgotten about this, but I'm down for this if it means one less month of wearing that godawful Whedon avvy.

Lucky we don't enforce ban bets!

Well it's lucky for everyone, because making fun of his lack of foresight while he's still around is far funnier than banning someone for a bet! :D

lol.

Man, this is going to haunt for me months.

4chan, although /co/ and /tv/ are the most unlikely places i'll read something like that and this really caugth me off guard:

I'm sure those aren't the last post we see about this matter

Was anyone kind of surprised that they got away with Loki calling Black Widow a "mewling quim"?

Nice touch and a a superb way to get crap past the radar.

Thats no fun! I think you should keep the avatar an extra month. :)

God no. Seriously, no.

I'm honestly just thankful it's not more embarrassing. Also love my MS PR tag at this moment, can't see that being changed any time soon, so I only have to get through 3 months of wearing a Whedon avvy.

The shame will pass, until my next not so finest moment/stupidly shortsighted bet.

Only months? If you're lucky maybe, GAF has a long memory. ;)

Bob will take some the heat/attention off.

...

I hope.

even if that would have been the intention of that scene i would see nothing wrong with that. it was established that he's out of touch with the modern world. could have made a ok gag if done right.

Omg guys, I'm sitting in the theater right now. In 7 mins the movie will start. I'm so hyped I'm about to shriek like a little kid. Will post impressions in a few hours.

BTW, all the seats in the theater are filled.

Strange days, I know!

It's weird because I stayed away from this movie like crazy. I had very little faith in it.

I love Joss Whedon, but even I thought to myself, "Whedon doing an assemble superhero movie? Captain America sucked. Iron Man 2 was iffy. Thor had its moments but damn was it mediocre. There's no way this will work."

I had zero hype for this being good, didn't even check RT score, and haven't watched a trailer for it in months.

And I had a blast. Weird times, indeed. I am thoroughly happy that Whedon finally has a huge hit on his hands. Given the right material, he can be the Fincher of popcorn-action/nerdy/sci-fi.

Well, he basically called her a cunt. It's just not something I was expecting to hear in Disney/Marvel's The Avengers.

I didn't know what it meant. I don't think anyone else did either. lol. We just knew it was supposed to be bad. The way the line was perfectly delivered hurt my feelings.
