In terms of value-for-money, this one gets a 10/10, but in terms of overall storytelling, I'd probably give it around an 8.
Loki's motivations weren't really clear, outside of "I want to be king!" Maybe that was part of the point of what Thor was trying to tell him, but yeah. And like I mentioned, I thought Fury's dialogue in the beginning was more than a little cheesy/forced.

Thanos was controlling him. He wants the Tesseract to kill the universe or whatever reason we'll see in Avengers 2, he turns Loki into a servant and sends him to Earth with his army to get it. I assume ownership of Earth was just something he'd give Loki in return.

Just returned from the movie, best Super Hero move ever. I am so excited about the scene after the credits. I can't wait for the next movie.

Really? He's known for putting together enormous, million dollar action movies? You fucking sure? Because he's never done it.

I said the movie was great, that every character stood on their own, and I'm getting this stupid nonsense thrown my way. Fuck, people, I loved Firefly too, but there were legitimate concerns about Joss handling a picture of this magnitude. I said that he handled it and made a great movie. Christ. Find somebody else to stand in for your pre-written rants.

They're saying he's known for handling ensemble casts well. Lighten up.

It really is amazing how nearly universal this experience is.

But yes, MidnightCowboy is correct.

Ok, cool! I knew it was something-God, "puny" is a good Hulk line.

It's great to see it with a whole audience, it made the whole movie even that much more enjoyable. There really isn't much of a plot, but it doesn't fuckin' matter. It's all about the wonderful character interactions and superheroes doing superhero shit, and they did it on a scale that's never been done before. I knew that Whedon would get the ensemble cast right, that's kinda what he does; but his action was phenomenal as well. Everybody gets cool moments, there's a great sense of scale and danger, but he keeps the action close and personal. I can see why the Avengers is on track for the biggest domestic opening weekend, it's just a real crowd pleaser of a movie. Mission accomplished, Marvel/Joss Whedon.

I really hope Whedon is coming for Avengers 2
with THANOS!

This is quite the overreaction. Chill out, man.

This is definitely up there with Spider-Man 2 and Superman 1 in terms of "best comic book movies of all-time."

...I'm hoping The Amazing Spider-Man gets on that list too. Same with The Dark Knight Rises. The trailer for it was awwwwwwesome in the theatre. Very creepy.

i think its pretty clear that hulk is the strongest, everybody fears him. it's:

1. hulk
2. thor
3. iron man

large gap

4. cap
5. black widow
6. hawkeye

It's funny, this is kind of the same order as "good heroes to shitty ones," but Capt 'Merica probably goes down to Hawkeye tier

This is such a strangely aggressive response to an otherwise innocuous, one-line post, heh.

I absolutely loved this movie. It was awesome seeing all of the Avengers work together at the end. Even Black Widow and Hawkeye got some good time in considering they're not as strong/powerful as the others.

Even tho I'm not a big fan of Iron Man, I liked how Captain called him out for only caring about himself, only for IM to almost sacrifice himself to save the city from the nuke.

Thor/Hulk were badass the entire movie. I also enjoyed Captain American even though I haven't seen his movie yet. I have no clue who Thanos is, but hopefully the sequel is as good as the first!

Just got back from seeing this.

Holy shitballs was this movie awesome.
The only negative thing I've got to say is the forced 3d but I think that's just the theater being dicks since they're the only one in town.

The whole theater roared at the smashdown Hulk gave
Loki, do I even need to spoiler this?

Yes. That is one moment that should absolutely not be spoiled for anyone.

Whedon is known for putting together action/fantasy pieces with ensemble casts. Who cares what the budget is the movie is done in his style.

Yeah, weird how me saying "I loved this movie" was cut down to say "I hated this movie." That tends to be really fucking annoying.

And I said he did a fantastic job. You realize that, yes? I really don't know how to make that any clearer. Do I need to post the dozens of articles that questioned Joss's ability to handle this project? I was simply saying those people had nothing to fear, that the movie was great.

Going to an IMAX 3D showing in a hour. Excited as hell, went to free comic day (first time ever) and the buzz for this was super high. Everybody was in a great mood.

Also I marathon'd the Marvel movies leading up to this last Sunday. So...... Hope it's as good as I expect it to be.

BB with impressions later tonight.

Edit: it's sold out!!! Looks like every IMAX showing here for today is!

One example of dumbed-down dialogue that I can remember from the start of the movie:

"Doors are open from both sides."

Did a "wtf?" at that one.

This is a fuuuuuuuun movie, but I think once the dust clears in a few months, people will be a little more objective about it.

Am I the only one disappointed with the sense of danger at the end? The giant army is supposed to be so deadly, but they really aren't intimidating at all. They get beat quite easily. In fact, that mega quake thing when Loki first appears fucks way more shit up. It wasn't a bad fight at all, as the action was choreographed well, but the stakes didn't live up to Sam Jackson's fear/Loki's threat.

Damn, I wanna go see the movie again a third time, but I don't know if I dealing with another packed theater is worth contributing to opening weekend, lol.

EXCEPT for the fact that had the Avengers not been there-the world would have been decimated and/or NY would have been nuked. And even with them-NY is completed fucked up.

Well, pretty much the entire island of Manhattan is rubble and was turned that way in what, 20 minutes?

One of the top scenes no one seems to be mentioning is
Thor holding his hand out in the fight with Hulk. You kinda picture the hammer breaking its way through the ship to reach him, and as soon as it does he counter-smashes the Hulk.

Thats why this should be the next movie:

I have to agree with the reactions that other people had, I really like Captain America, he is probably the character I am most interested in terms of seeing his story unfold. Iron Man is great as always and while I am still a fan of Norton I think Ruffalo did a fantastic job and was the highlight of the film. It was strange how I didn't really feel anything during the opening but as the film kept going I kept getting into it. I felt like I was right next to these characters as they were interacting. There is nothing that felt truly brilliant here except for maybe the large special effects spectacle towards the end, but it didn't matter, this was an example of a director just focusing in and doing an excellent job. This was the Marvel formula condensed to its purest essence.

One thing I must say, I knew about pretty much all of the spoiler beats beforehand, and if anything, it just made the anticipation greater. Don't know if I'd like it as much off the beat without knowing that stuff
judging by my reaction to watching Serenity spoiler-free

Yeah, there were a bunch of stuff that was weird for me motivation wise.

I'm still not very sure why he let himself get captured. As an insider he did not do much and I don't really buy the fact he was setting them up against each other by merely sitting there. Also, he seemed to know they would get back together later on and did not really seem to care about it when they did, making it look like they weren't a threat in the first place.

He wanted to manipulate and get to Hulk. That's what Black Widow got out of him at the cell.

Saw this last night with my girlfriend. It was the first time in years I watched a movie the day it came out, and it was so worth it. It is such a fun, hilarious, ass-kicking movie. Seemed well balanced in both character focus and power level. Character interactions were great, everybody had at least two or three shining moments for me. And I absolutely loved both Bruce and the Hulk, Ruffalo is a great fit for the role and I hope to see him in the future.

Only few disappointments, one being that one moment being spoiled and its impact lessened (same one discussed not long ago) and the other being that Nick Fury isn't a character that yells a lot, haha. My girlfriend was also disappointed that it was a movie Samuel L. Jackson didn't yell in.

But good lord nothing had me as hyped as the first post-credits scene.
Literally yelled out "OH SHIT IT'S THANOS OH MY GOOOOOOOOOD!"

Superb movie all around. I'm going to watch it again with my dad sometime soon (also a first).

Basically, anything with the Hulk was fantastic. Him going apeshit after Cap says his "smash line" was the best part. I cannot wait for the first Ruffalo Hulk movie. He absolutely nailed Banner in a way that Norton and whatshisname never did. In those movies, I just sort of tolerated Banner. "Get to the Hulk already!"

But Ruffalo does such a good job here, I could watch him through a whole movie.

...but he's not stronger than The Hulk.

There have been power ups and downs, but Marvel has generally held the two to be roughly equal.

ThorStrength19Defenders10.jpg

Thor, Hercules, Juggernaut, Gladiator, Thanos, and maybe one or two others that slip my mind don't really HAVE limits to how strong they are and are all drawing on virtually infinite power sources. The only difference between Hulk and these guys is Hulk will not hold back or pull punches if he gets into it with you. (most heroes from superman on down to spiderman have this as a blanket excuse as to why they don't instantly kill anyone weaker than they are.)

Movie thor is a completely different story though, I agree- they're definitely on two totally different strength tiers.

The only thing i did not like in the movie was
after the nuke went off the enemies on the ground drop dead/stop moving . It's a really easy way to stop the fighting without much work .

Still that did not stop the movie from being great .

Agreed. That always feels like a cheat whenever it happens in movies.

well, at that point (portal closed, mothership destroyed) it's basically cleanup, so why draw that out?

tying everything up neatly and plausibly is the mark of a good script, imho

Shut your damn mouth. :-D

Cap...may be "dry", but he's a great super hero.

I want to see them grow his leadership thing. That's generally been his biggest asset. Not that he can just kick butt, but that he inspires everybody else around him to do the same. They need to really bring that part of his character into focus in Capt America 2: America Harder.

you want Shawarma now don't you? lol

lol looks like they were having a good time

and Cap was great. He's an old-fashioned superhero, and I think they needed somebody like that. He was down for the Avengers from the very beginning. Liked that he isn't afraid to kill a guy or use a machine gun, either. The man's a soldier, albeit a super one.

Cap is fucking awesome. He would have fucked Iron Man up if Tony put the suit on.

haha hell no. but it's good to see he has that confidence.

No hesitation at all in going head to head versus gods, or Tony Stark if that's what the mission calls for. I'd like to see more of that in Cap 2
