"Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power. For identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."

I would imagine that Whedon will be given the keys to the kingdom creatively for Avengers 2 and that the budget will be absolutely insane.

I will say this for Avengers though: I felt like I saw all $220M up there on the screen.

Evan Almighty had a budget of $175M. I'm forced to ask: Why?

There are 2 types of high budget movies: there are those where all the money goes into the production and you see it all gloriously up on screen, and then there are those where half of the money goes to lining actors' pockets.

Steve Carrell gotta eat.

I fucking LOVED this.

Animals, big CG, Steve Carell, crazy mismanagement probably; shit like that makes budgets inflate to the size of the tits in your avatar

Holy crap, Young Neil was in that film! Love that guy.

So, what about Green Lantern's 220m budget?

edit: Too late

I don't know what brought this to mind, but Solo, what did you think of Cap in this? I only ask because I remember you hating Captain America the movie like poison. :lol

Reminded me of Skeletor from the movie when he was dressed like that. Even more so when he screamed out "KNEEL".

Brought the house down

Did Whedon really write all these comic lines? If so, wow
Him and Zach Penn worked on the story together, but yes, Whedon actually wrote the screenplay.

I don't see why it's surprising. While the haters may feel he got a bit too 'witty' in his shows (he was Diablo Cody before Diablo Cody), I think everyone would agree that these sorts of interactions where always his strong suit.

If anything, he's come full circle and is scripting his dialog more like he did back when he penned Toy Story, etc.

What's the Galaga and Legolas scene again?

Galaga was answered so...

Steve Rogers: All right listen up. Until we can close that portal up there, what we need is containment. Barton, I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you've got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash.
Clint Barton: Want to give me a lift?
Tony Stark: Right. Better clench up, Legolas.

I thought he was handled really well. The combination of having him as a fish out of water in the future, having Stark around to mock him, and having his very own fanboy Coulson to drive him really worked for me. I'll NEVER come around on that movie, but I had absolutely NO problems with him here. Ditto for Black Widow. I don't like IM2 and hated ScarJo in it, but thought she was great in this.

Basically this whole movie is like a perfect alignment of a bunch of things happening at exactly the right time at exactly the right rhythm. I honestly don't know if its humanly possible that this movie could have turned out any better than it did.

I just read an article yesterday where Whedon said he threw Penn's script out completely and rewrote the thing from scratch. Penn acknowledged it. Penn still got a writing credit though.

I read in his GQ interview he just hijacked the whole thing. I think the story credits were more for contractual reasons.

I think the main problem with Cap here is that he's sporting that squinting 'hurt' face too much, something i'd almost never see in the comics. Aside from that, his lack of tactical genius. Ordering people =/= tactical god. They need a way to make us see some of his decisions as 'godly' or something, where no one else can see what he sees, but they have faith and follow what he orders.

That's Cap. Maybe in A2..

Just got back. The group I was with saw it in 3D because the 2D showing we went to was sold out, and the next 2D showing wasn't for another three hours. It was mostly inoffensive, but still would've liked to see it in 2D.

I had a great time, but that could've been in part due to the group I was with. The movie was really funny, and it took me a couple of seconds to get that "flying monkeys" line. Great action, good pacing, couldn't follow it at parts but the parts I could follow got me through the parts I couldn't.

Would see again.

Also, did I detect seeds of romance between Natasha and Banner or is that a reach? It seems like it's barely there, but the look on her face when he transforms in the helicarrier, and then her passing him his bag in the ending (they were riding together?) made me think something was there.

I didn't notice it, but my gf did, and she brought it up on the ride home. Would almost make sense too as foreshadowing: Banner left with Stark in his car, Black Widow is an IM character and will most likely be in IM3. If we assume Banner will be involved in IM3 in some regard, maybe a few scenes here in Avengers were placed just to foreshadow a romance that develops between BW and Banner in the next IM3? I could see it...

What more does he need though? He worked the story, wrote the script, directed it, and was given a $200+ million dollar budget with a ton of advertising.

If anything, he basically already had the skeleton key. Sure they could (and likely will) give him more for the next movie, but it's not like the production was financially constrained very much. That's a pretty big budget.

She's not in IM3, apparently.

I just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D and this movie definitely lived up to all the hype for me. I've loved all of Whedon's work in the past and this movie is no different. The humor reminded me a lot of the humor in his other movies.

And I'm not surprised this film is having such a huge weekend. I'm pretty sure the theater I went to was completely sold out. I don't think that often happens around here on a Sunday afternoon.

Heh ... even better.

Regardless though, my point was that Whedon alone was credited with the screenplay (ie script). He wrote the dialog.

I don't dig it. Too abstract for something like this.

I definitely wouldn't mind if only he could see her, and they left it up in the air as to whether she was a real thing, like crimonspider says. But don't have her definitively be a being, like in the comics.

They should make it that he is talking to air right next to him, make him seem crazy. Then when one of the heroes is near death, then he/she will be able to see Death right next to Thanos with him still talking to her.

Apparently she likes getting slapped around by dudes.

She's not in IM3, apparently.

And neither will be Banner: IM3 is going to so focused on Tony, a return to the world of Stark in Iron Man 1 rather than the wider world of IM2 and Avengers. I'll be surprised if we see War Machine, to be honest (I know Rhodey's in it, but whether or not he'll suit up is a different question).

Ahhh, just came back from watching it...it was FANTASTIC! I've never been a fan of the Avengers really, not for any particular reason, but this film was absolutely brilliant. Funny, superb action and the drama was well done. I especially liked the scene with Fury and Loki locked up. I actually think Sam Jackson did a really good job, and was a lot less Sam Jackson-y than usual. And the scene where the team are all arguing was great. Really funny and entertaining.

Hulk smashing Thor in good quality (you can hear the audience laughing too)

Lol, this scene got a roar of laughter from my audience. Brilliant!

Oh and I think Alan Silvestri did an amazing job. The scene I mentioned earlier, with Fury and Lock in containment had some really superb music in it.

Overall, a marvelous film.

Whedon has also said in interviews he was doing doing a lot of rewriting on set because he had a lot of dialogues in there that were just way too long. He also said his first cut of the film was three hours because of it.

I can't wait for those DVD extras.

Thanos will work better if they don't actually have Death being a being that exists in the MCU, and instead just make him a total headcase who believes he can "court Death". Besides, he needs a serious flaw to undermine his ridiculous strength and intelligence.

edit: love this

He has one.

Just saw it. I thought it was good, definitely one of the better superhero movies I've seen... but it didn't really surpass any expectations I had, which were modest going in. A lot of it seemed pretty typical, and I guess lengthy action scenes where the stakes aren't high (obviously everyone would make it out okay) don't really do it for me anymore. It was well directed and acted though, and the standout scenes that have been mentioned a lot already (hulk hitting thor, schwarma, hulk destroying Loki) were funny. It just felt really overdone to me, which is to be expected with this type of movie, but I guess not something I'm super into. I'd still be down for the inevitable sequel though, the chemistry between some of the actors is pretty entertaining. But I guess I'm just not as impressed as a lot of people; then again I wasn't very hyped to begin with.

Apparently there's several scenes of Cap trying to fit into 21st century America, like one in his apartment and one where he meets present day Peggy Carter.

Kinda want to see that, but I get why it wasn't in the film, it's already 2 and a half hours and the punching bag scene kinda told most of the story anyway.

Hmmm..... we just need more Hiddleston. He should at least pop up in Thor 2, I would imagine.

I know it might betray the comics (or not), but I would love it if he were to somehow switch sides between now and Avengers 2 and actually be an Avenger in it.

Yeah, I can't wait for the extra 30 minutes of footage. Also, i'm a sucker for all the behind-the-scenes shit.

Somewhat surprising, considering the espionage nature the plot is going with.. Do we know the status of Ruffalo as well?

In Houston, specifically. Haven't been in two years or so, has it come around since then?

Have you never been to the Phoenician? Or been to Hillcroft and Westheimer?

So now that I've got a good sleep after watching The Avengers, it has just occurred to me that this is the best superhero movie ever made.
