Marvel's The Avengers |OT| (Dir. Joss Whedon) [Spoilers unmarked]

Somewhat surprising, considering the espionage nature the plot is going with.. Do we know the status of Ruffalo as well?

He's not in IM3 either, if that's what you're asking. I don't think Marvel has exercised any part of the other 5 movies he's contracted for, unless he's part of that secret short that they made recently.

So this was just another superhero movie.. could not point out one single thing it did better than the countless other mediocrities we've seen the past few years.

Not necessarily surprised - all they have to do to get 90+ on the rotten tomatoes meter and box office hype through the roof are to sprinkle with some one liners here and there. Disappointing that so many competent people move through this genre and none of them leave a trace of originality or personality.

What is this I don"t even

Saw it yesterday, loved the shit out of it and this is the first Whedon real life production Ive enjoyed (characters actually have different senses of humor!)

Dont know how you could improve this movie. Loved that they managed to make Cap the leader and not the main character at the same time.

They never bust out the "Avengers assemble" line, right?

This was no better than the Thors, the Iron Men, the Hulk movies, although to be fair they were all overrated as well. Only thing approaching character here is Ruffalo's bits, all the other stuff points towards a phoned in, spineless script where no one dared to spend this much money on something that's not proven to sell. Whedon does not show his face at all. There's seriously nothing here - just tame action, and I desperately wish to see some unique action choreography in a superhero movie soon.

When are people going to ask for more with superhero movies? For anything? For any sort of vision or direction?

I love fun, by the way. I don't mind it all being action and explosion. I just wish any of these movies had anything of their own, to separate them, to make me feel like I haven't watched it all (and like I couldn't predict every snarky one-liner).

'We have an army'

'We have Hulk'

And Cap America giving instructions to the cop who says 'why should I follow your orders' made the audience laugh the most too.

That moment was perfectly done. It was actually my personal favorite in the movie. Just the way it was shot and the way the actor transitioned so seamlessly.

Biggest reaction in my theater was the first shot of the avengers assembling from the trailer. The hulk catching ironman got nothing. Really wish they wouldve left that out of the trailers. Would've been a nice surprise. Cap balling up behind his shield also got a big pop. I somehow missed that. My friend had to tell me what happened.

This was no better than the Thors, the Iron Men, the Hulk movies, .

Is it worth reading the rest of your post? Because The Avengers was much better than these movies. :p

edit: just remembered of a scene that made everyone laugh: the old man giving Bruce clothes (after he falls from the sky as Hulk)

He asks: Are you an alien?

'No'

'Then you have a disease'

LOL

If you seriously don't see Whedon's hand all over this thing, then there's nothing left to say.

Nah, you didn't predict Galaga.

I hate to even have to reply this post (because this argument will go nowhere) but you're way off base. A team based battle on this scale has simply never been done in the comic book movie realm and it's rarely done well in other genres. A battle where everyone had a purpose, everyone had a job to do and no one felt out of place. Every moment felt very cohesive where it could've very easily been a jumbled mess.

And I don't see how this action wasn't unique. It is very very rare to have so much play between characters in an action scene. That entire scene with ironman fighting with cap was very well choreographed especially with the shield deflection pay off. These are things that the xmen movies should've been doing but didn't. There was also a moment between Thor and hulk on top of the flying thingamajig that had a similar pay off. I missed it personally but my friends caught it.

My main gripe with the film was RDJ. You can tell he's a little tired of playing that character. Either that or the writing was just awful for him. I really couldn't tell. I didn't look forward to seeing him on screen as I did in the ironman movies.

u mad? This was his best outing yet. He was on fire throughout the movie.

We're gonna have to degree to disagree on that one.

The bolded is as close to a factually incorrect statement as a subjective opinion can have. If you had asked me to guess the director, I would have gotten Whedon within a half an hour.

You must be a whole lot of fun in real life. I'm so glad I'm not as negative or critical a person as you are...

Wow, I got just the opposite, I thought RDJ had his best performance yet as IM in Avengers, even better than he did in his own two standalone movies. He seemed in his prime this time IMHO. I'm amazed that I don't feel he stole the show seeing how good he did here, and that is a true testament to Whedon developing all of the Avengers enough to not LET RDJ steal the show.

Just saw it again in 3D, kind of have mixed feelings about 3D. Surprisingly I actually think the 3D adds more to it during the slower parts of the movie because its a little more immersive, but in the fast paced action scenes at times its harder to focus and tell whats going on, at least thats how it was for me. So I guess seeing it in both formats is the way to go. The 2nd time seeing it there was definitely not as much cheering/laughing/clapping as the midnight show that i went to, but some of the moments that im sure you can guess still got big applause, and the theater was still packed.

The exact line was: "Well then, son, you've got a condition".
But yes, it was pretty funny and got a good reaction out of my crowd too. :)

I couldn't disagree with you more, but in twelve months this will be general sentiment. Just as Avatar, TDK etc. etc. got backlashed.

I saw it in 2d opening day at a local theater and 3d at IMAX. I thought the 3D was handeled pretty well overall. The stand out for me was Hawkeye shooting the blinking red arrow at Loki. That part was the only 3D moment that really stood out though.

However, the Amazing Spiderman trailer looked fantastic in 3D.

To say that this film is nothing more than "action and explosion" is to completely miss why each and every audience that watches the Avengers breaks into uproarous applause. And the reason for this - which I'll leave you to figure out - is inextricably tied to the obvious fact that you refuse to accept: this film screams - screams - WHEDON.

Here's the thing:

It WORKED. The fact that it even worked shows that it had great vision and direction.

Whoa. Are you from Peru by any chance? Did you write this "objective" spanish "review"?
"Avengers critic: It'll do great money-wise, but is it a good movie? The answer here!"

I'm sorry, but I have to vent. I have never had a movie ruined for me by the audience in the theater...they laughed at EVERYTHING loud and long enough that I couldn't hear the next line EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I thought I was part of some experiment where they pumped laughing gas into the theater and me and my girl were somehow immune. Lines that would illicit a chuckle at most had people gasping for air. When is the last time anyone has heard a "guffaw"? I heard several today. I'm sorry if it seems like I didn't like it...I enjoyed it for the most part, but I have to see it again in a relatively empty theater to even have an decent opinion on it.

TLDR: I liked it, I think.

I will admit, I missed a few lines due to the crowd laughing so hard too. I didn't mind it so much because I was laughing too. Can't wait to buy this on blu-ray and watch it over and over again in the comfort (and serenity) of my own home theater system.

If you want a quiet experience for a big popcorn flick like this, you generally are best served by waiting a week or two into release before seeing it.

I know a couple of friends specifically waiting for Battleship opening weekend for their Avengers watch.

I actually like the energy from a packed theater on opening weekend for a big flick like this. I went to see TDR opening weekend. I don't however like (or go to see) comedies though, so I think that may be the issue.

Yeah. I didn't for Avengers obviously, but I usually tend to lag my viewings of the big summer movies a week behind release. Works out great for the most part.

I'm probably one of the few who'll agree.

Not saying it was a bad movie by any means, but it wasn't anything special and it's certainly one I'll not bother to watch again. Sure it had a few funny bits but it's nothing overly memorable.

If you seriously don't see Whedon's hand all over this thing, then there's nothing left to say.

The Hulk / Loki "confrontation" was so very Whedon-esque, it'd be hard to imagine it coming from anyone else.

Also, the killing off of a major supporting character in heroic manner.
No actual knowledge, but they are going to turn him into The Vision....right?
Probably not, but a guy can hope.

Just got out. Well, it was pretty good, not great by any means but good. It's chock full of cheesy dialogue, something of a whedon staple, but the action was well done, set pieces were all good and the laughs were well done. Had a few issues, which I'll detail when I get home.

Overall, I give it 3 out of 5, very surprised whedon pulled it for the most part.

I got whedon'd upside the head. Lol.

Okay wow, couldn't really catch fully up with the 5+ pages of new stuff here since I checked-in yesterday, but I'm about to go again to see this at Sawgrass (either 8:15 or 9). Anybody coming?

This is the first time in a long time, fewer than 5 times in my life, that I legitimately just want to pay full price to see the movie in theaters again and help out the weekend box numbers in some small way, to encourage this caliber of entertainment to continue.

Wait, you guys think coulson is dead? It was my impression that fury's second in command saying the cards where in his locker, and there for being bloodied was impossible, as well as fury's line afterward that his death was a ruse.
