There was nothing about their fight (Loki v. Cap) that looked like it was anything special. They weren't fighting quickly or seemingly with great strength. It was just a few punches and kicks if I remember right. Just some dude in a silly blue outfit throwing mediocre punches and kicks!

Is Loki some kind of hand to hand fighting expert or something?

did you watch Thor? Loki fought Thor one on one and did pretty well.

He got an arrow off, and she dodged it.

Another one of my unproven theories on this movie's plot point: Hawkeye and that Doctor from Thor get mind hijacked. The Doctor was able to fight through it enough to build in a way to stop the device if they had to. Therefore, Hawkeye could've had some control. Moments where this may have occurred include his Black Widow fight, and shooting Fury in the vest at the start of the movie.

He fought Widow hand to hand, well hand to Bow.

he struggled with Widow. he would be dead against the other guys

He fought Black Widow with a knife and lost.

They do show him fighting with his bow in melee combat. He used it like a staff.

Right, cheers, thought I remembered something like that. Also, lol. Black Widow is too good.

martial arts skills. but is below peak human unlike the rest of the avengers minus stark sans suit.

Yeah, figured as much. I guess decent level special ops combat skill means fuck all in comic book world. :lol

loki is thousands of years old, yes he knows how to fight

I'm not convinced the failsafe existed because of Selvig's pure will. It's entirely possible Loki himself ordered the failsafe because he didn't trust his handlers completely.

Man...Movie Captain does not exude the awesomeness you guys are all presenting here. Movie Cap would get busted up big time.

Do you guys think Movie Cap is at all a good representation of Cap's abilities in the comics, then? I swear, Movie Cap doesn't inspire any confidence in me that he could stand toe-to-toe with a master marksman starting at a large distance apart.

Read Millar/Hitch Ultimates.

Hawkeye probably has a special arrow that could take down Cap. Or he'd just take an indirect approach. Shoot an exploding arrow in front of Cap, use like a net arrow or something, some sort of boomerang arrow that turns around and hits from behind.

I mean Cap would still probably win, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as you might think.

They do show him fighting with his bow in melee combat. He used it like a staff.

He also whipped out an arrow and started stabbing dudes with it like a knife. I thought that was pretty badass.

Read Millar/Hitch Ultimates.

I just may...saw in that article posted by someone here that Ultimates is a good place to start with the Avengers.

If they're on Comixology I'll probably read them on my upcoming business trip.

Ultimates 1 and 2 are amazing. Stop after that though. 3 doesn't exist.

Best Cap ever is the Mark Waid/Ron Garney run. And yes, movie Cap is how Cap should be, considering he's barely out of the ice.

Just to chime in; in the comics, Captain America actually trains Hawkeye a bit and now and then he makes that reference as to "why you can't defeat me, silly villain".

Well, when Waid and Garney took back over after Heroes Reborn it was not as good.

But Ultimates does show Cap at supreme levels of badass, but his personality is just complete douchbag and it ruins him for me. Give me a movie with classic Cap personality (like the movies have so far) but with him kicking ass as hard as he did in Ultimates and you will make everyone happy.

not when everyone else has been tragically altered, have a super powered element, or is a near cosmic entity

50 yards would take Cap probably 3 seconds. Which is 1-2 arrows from Hawkeye. He would block one with his shield dodge the other and separate his head from his shoulders with his shield.

My one gripe with this movie is Captain America isn't as badass as he should be.

This.
50 yards would allow Hawkeye maybe two shots, first shot would probably be expected to be blocked so it might be a feint with the second the true shot but that is with Cap coming full steam.

Is Ultimate Comics Avengers any good? I never really gave it a shot after that entire continuity got pulled through the shitter.

1&2 are awesome. they influenced the movies quite a bit. and also Sam Jackson as Nick Fury was from the comics first.

edit: we're talking about Ultimates right?

Not really. I can't even remember what happened. Or maybe I didn't finish it.

No, it's this:

Saw the movie last night. Though cheesy as hell, I had a huge fucking grin once Shoot to Thrill suddenly started playing in Caps fight vs loki.

Absolutely amazing, I've been collecting comics since I was a kid and somehow just kinda missed out when they were coming out. I went and bought Ultimates 1 and Ultimates 2 in hardcover. Read both in two days. Just amazing, and really these movies take alot more queues from the Ultimates than the regular Avengers.

It's not the Ultimates he's referring to, but Ultimate Comics: Avengers. It came after Ultimates 3.

I mean that first run. Some of the best comics I ever read. Theyre available in Comixology, I might have to re-read them.

Their initial run before the Heroes Reborn shit was fantastic stuff, I will agree. It is funny because they were given the book pretty much knowing it was going to get killed for the Reborn stuff, and they wound up turning it into one of the best books and people were pissed they killed it.

Ultimates 1 is available for 2 bucks an issue on Comixology ($28), or you can buy Vol. 1 (1-6) for $11 and Vol. 2 (7-14) for $15.

...anyone know if the experience is at all different buying them in volumes vs. a la carte?

So are Ultimates 1 and 2

Millar is a talentless hack

Oh god I'm confused.

Okay okay.

If I was to buy an avengers anthology... which series would I go for? Assuming there is a bound book for it?

I don't think it is

I think they still download as individual comics

Or at least they did, dunno if they offer trades now

Captain America Vol.1 issues 444-454, in case anyone is curious. I guarantee you will love it.

I was going to say Avengers Assemble by Kurt Busiek but I just checked Amazon and volume 1 is going for £90 so er, yeah.

Digital version is available on Nook. Not sure about other places. And the first two volumes of the Busiek/Perez run are fantastic. Especially volume 2, as it has Ultron Unlimited.

I've been enjoying the old school Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers paperbacks. Been reading them at lunch, at the office. :lol

I do wonder if we'll see how much sales have increased for these volumes thanks to the movie. Would be interesting to see.

I know every book store I have been in has tables full of Avengers trade paperbacks where normally their trade selection would be Long Halloween, Maus and an Ultimate Spider-Man book

I'll ask around at the owners I know, but the previous movies have all increased sales by a moderate amount so I imagine The Avengers is going to increase that even moreso. That coupled with Free Comic Book Day being the same weekend as the release of the movie probably skyrocketed Comic Sales for the weekend.
