What do you feel about the word Nigga?

All about the context.

Myyy nigga.

I'm white. My grandpa uses nigger on a daily basis, my dad used it when I was growing up but doesn't any more, and I used it until I learned that I shouldn't when I was in middle school.

Haven't said it since.

grow up where I'm from and its hard to find people my age who don't say it.

Anyone from the hood uses it, or has used it(black, white or puertorican). It is natural to say in the street when you're referring to a "dude" (not just to someone black like racists) if you're around it, but I've come to a point where I have stopped using it simply to improve my vocabulary. The word can be taken as a racist slur(and it's derived from that), but to me it is just a vulgar word so I stopped using it. It still slips out from time to time.
summed it perfectly for me.

The only time I say it is in reference to what my friend said when I was playing Colossus in MvC2 and hyper KO'd him... "That nigga flew!!!"

In actual conversation, no.

I never use either word, but my gps uses it all the time.

My sister-in-law's name is Negar : "You are have arrived at Neggars place"

Garmin, shame on you.

Feels like we have this debate every year but nothing ever changes. I wish the word would die in a fire, and it always drives me nuts when black people try and rationalize the use of it. Some words don't need to be reapprorpirated; this is one of them.

I had an Asian kid who always called me "nigga". Keep in mind if you don't already know that I'm whiter than fucking white.

Somehow it didn't seem racist when he said it...

My Asian friend always called me "nigga," and another called me "chink."

I'm not Asian, by the way, lol.

May as well ask it here:

Is Neogro-GAF racist? I randomly thought of it and can't figure out if it's acceptable.

Are you part of the tribe? If you're not then it is kind of offensive I guess. I call myself a negro but I don't want someone who isn't black calling me a negro.

Yep, this is me. I grew up in a hood, where I was basically the only white kid. All my life 99.9% of my friends were black. The word was everywhere growing up, and nobody cared if I used it. Pretty much all my friends have said they 'see' me as black. Hell, I was encouraged to use the word at points.

I've tried to cut it out of my vocabulary for a variety of reasons now. I won't censor myself when saying lyrics, which I think is ridiculous, but I've pretty much completely cut it out of my everyday talk with my friends. They still use it all the time though, which makes it slip out at at times.

I'm black and I don't use it. I don't like the hypocritical stance of "it's OUR word" so I don't use it no matter what company I'm in. I don't find it empowering or anything like that.

I'm Brazilian which is Latino I guess, I use it with my best friends who are Puerto Rican and Colombian themselves. I use it in a light context as a way to say dude or bro i.e. my nigga as a greeting or etc. I have a close black friend and I say it to him as well and he doesn't mind, at least he's never said anything about it though if he had I'd stop to respect his wishes.

I always think that it depends on the context overall. Though I have to say that nigger almost always seems to be used in a racist way rather than nigga. But if I'm around a black guy who I'm not close with then I won't call him by it but if it comes up in a song or something I'll say it.

Though I live in Brazil now so nigga doesn't really mean anything. There's negão which is used to refer to a black man, which depends on the closeness between the two people and unlike nigga it's only used to refer to a black man instead of dude or bro kind of like with nigga for some people.

I grew up saying the word around friends/family and I likely won't ever completely remove it from my vocabulary. I hardly ever use it around mixed company and of course I never use it in a professional setting. And really, if two non-black people wish to call each other a nigga then that's their business, just don't fucking call me one or use the word around me. Fact is, I find it insulting when most non-blacks use the word around me. And that is neither hypocritical nor inconsistent when I use it because I am black. I'm not sure why someone growing up not using the word would care one way or another honestly.

I find it to be a mark of ignorance whenever I hear someone use it, regardless of race. It just sounds uneducated and hopeless.

Is it weird that it bothers me when hispanic people use it? Not saying I WANT to say it, but it seems presumptuous when they DO. Just curious.

Never use it. The N word is quite often heard in my hometown because it's a bit backwaterish and I remember the first non-white person settling in here about 20 years ago or so I've heard lol.

For example the generation of my grandparents use it almost exclusively about black people, because that's what they were taught in schools back then...

Finlaaand.

Thread is self explanatory. What do you feel about it? To those who aren't black do you feel as it is a word that shouldn't be restricted as the NY Times guy said a few days ago? Do you feel that you should be able to say it if others can say it? Do you use it yourself? Do you not use it? To those that are black, do you feel as if it is a word that pushes the ignorant mindset of others upon you?(ala chamillionaire) Do you use it yourself? Do you not use it? Do you have a problem when others who aren't black use it around you or do you have those that you are cool with that can use it whenever? Do you feel as if there is a difference in the use of nigga and nigger?

I think Louis CK said something along the lines that they do not have the right to be offended. Not sure where that leaves me.

Personally, I never use the word. Not anymore anyway. I do not have the fall back of having lots of black friends.

But I look at words as being contextual and those who use slurs and such, the words are not offensive unless they are meant to offend.

Example, my mother is Jewish. My friends know this and they constantly make Jew jokes. They also know that I have a sense of humor and am not offended by said jokes.

It does not bother me, but I understand that for others it is much deeper and darker. For me, slurs are about intent. If you say nigger or fag, where is that coming from? Is it mean spirited? Or is it just joking around?

It is always about context with me. You can say whatever you want. Actually I would hope that people I know use the words that they want to use. I can then judge them on their intent.

I realize the history behind the word is hurtful, but I am somehow unable to view language as anything else but a tool for communication.

I don't seek out a reason to use the word, but I find a glaring, gaping difference between colloquially calling someone the word and using it for hate speech.

I'm also reasonable and respectful enough to realize that other people have different opinions. Unfortunately the taboo around the word ironically only gives it more power.

What a bunch of n
innys.

Growing up, a lot of the people I hung out with used it. Didn't matter race or religion, it was just something we used when talking. Just the way it was.

I just treat it like "fuck" or "shit", and just remind myself that it isn't acceptable in talk outside of people you're close and comfortable with. I've used it less and less as I've gotten older, but I'll still catch myself saying it when around certain groups of friends though.

With any racism, it all depends on the persons intent.
I could care less if someone makes a joke for the sake of joking.
If it was intended to be spiteful or insulting, then it's a no-go.
I make mean spirited jokes sometimes, but I know if others are okay with it or not.

I do hate it when white racist southerner guys say 'nigger' though. It's such a harsh sounding word.. not even taking in the account to the meaning or history behind it. And the attitude that comes with it is the worst.

He's right. Restricting the usage of certain words to a particular race is fucking stupid.

What if I'm half black? What if I'm black but was raised by white adoptive parents? Conversely what if I'm white and grew up in South Central?

You can't have it both ways and choose whether or not to be offended based on the colour of the mouth from which the word is spoken.

I won't use any word that people in my company may find personally offensive but black people claiming that its cool for them to throw the word back and forth while instructing us whiteys to watch their step is bullshit.

every non black person should be able to call a black person/each other a nigga/nigger to his face and in public without consequence.

I never use it unless I'm singing along to a rap song in private. I used to live with a black guy from Tennessee who, while never claiming to be hood, had only ever lived around other black people and spoke with a particular dialect. He actually thought it was funny that I avoided saying it, because for him it was so normal.

I'm a white dude. I think the -er is pretty much fucked up either way. I feel that -a has become a term thrown around so much that it doesn't mean shit... sorta like biatch. Then again, what the fuck do I know. I just hate when I get caught in the moment during a rap song and I can't rap a verse because its got nigga in it. I don't want to offend anyone. I just want you to feel me flow.

gee, that might have something to do with white folks using it against us for hundreds of years as they fucked us over and called us subhumans. but hey, that's ancient history, right. them brothers need to get the fuck over it.

If its so horribly offensive to your ears don't use it. Like I said, I won't use a word that you may find personally offensive in your company - in fact when it comes to the word nigger, I prefer not to use it at all.

However, to claim that the word itself should only be uttered by black lips is assinine.

I wanna know what other things black folks have the right to find offensive. do tell.

That cracked me up. Sniggers.

Haha... A friend of mine had a dark elf character in Oblivion that he called "Snigga."

I guess I say it occasionally if I'm with my close group of friends. But it's usually when quoting a song/movie/video. I don't use it in my regular vocabulary. Like others said, context is important.

When my friends and I wish to sound ignorant and shit we say nigga a lot, usually drunk though. It's used more in a self depricating way. We're also a mixed race group of friends as well.
