Cost of damage to New York City as depicted in The Avengers? $160 billion

According to the Kinetic Analysis Corporation (KAC), the total cost to restore New York City if The Avengers wasn't just a movie would be $160 billion—$60 or $70 billion for physical destruction, the rest in various types of economic impact. For real-world comparison, the 9/11 attacks cost $30 billion, the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami $122 billion, and Katrina and the federal floods over $90 billion, all according to KAC.

To its credit, KAC got into the spirit of the occasion. The title of the two-page document is "Chitauri Invasion of New York City." Among the report's conclusions:

"Cleanup from monster attacks and alien invasions often have complications not found in natural catastrophes."

"There was considerable collateral damage of questionable necessity by at least one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives (Hulk)."

What a magnificent pair of sentences. I am liking this day.

I might have to go back tonight after watching the first 5 over Sunday and Monday nights and seeing this yesterday. I haven't been hooked on a universe like this (after going in mostly blind) since The Wire a few years ago.

Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America on Blu Ray = $80 + 20 assuming I see this for a second time. A little out of control.

I'm sure S.H.I.E.L.D.'s accounting department will be silently cursing their team for all the damage; Tony would probably get Pepper to figure out how they can foot part of the bill too.

oh, not too bad.

I'm surprised people don't know what a shawarma wrap is :S

Its like those architects that estimated the cost of a death star.

I think more people have had it than may realize it, they just maybe didn't hear it called that before.

quivering quim is making a comeback. Get ready to deliver the ultimate in trash talking the likes the world hasn't seen for 300 years.

That reminds me of this GREAT segment in an Ultimate X-Men issue when Nick Fury is more of a James Bond action-spy type. He has this ridiculous array of gadgets and equipment that gives him near-superhuman abilities, but all of them are directly tied to the S.H.I.E.L.D. accounting budget in real time and he can only get a few seconds out of each before burning through their finances. I think there's even a shot where they give him like 5 seconds of intangibility and he loses a gun because they run out of money before he can get it through the wall.

That's when they're actively capturing the X-Men to find Cable, right? Or am I remembering the wrong part...

I'm watching the pilot of The Incredible Hulk TV show. You know, they made some interesting changes to the origin. Interesting in a good way.

Ruffalo is definitely channeling Bill Bixby. Also, in a good way.

I'm surprised that people are surprised that this movie was the first time a lot of people have heard of shawarma. The fact that it's pretty obscure, at least here in the States, was the entire joke when Tony mentioned it. "I have no idea what shawarma is, let's go find out."

I'm surprised by this!
Where do you live?

I'm not. It's really not that known/popular of a thing. MUCH more in NY than other areas. While I'm sure places exist anywhere that those cultures are found, it's not something you can just walk out and find in the vast majority of the country.
Heck, the only reason I knew what it was going in was because of Infected Mushroom and Wikipedia, and I've lived only a few hours from NYC.

Nope nope. It's quite early on. It's when Fury is sent by SHIELD to investigate the weird bio-signature that appears to be mutantlike but not human, and it's like a crazy organic blob weapon of mass destruction.

What does Whedon personally stand to make from this film? In his open letter to fans he joked about getting a percentage of the gross, which - if true - could make him more money than he's made in his entire life so far.

I'm hoping for:

2013: Iron Man 3 and Thor 2
2014: Captain America 2 and Avengers 2

I don't want to wait any more than that for another Avengers movie. Sorry Marvel.

He is going to get the moviemaking equivalent of a blank check (as well as something close to an actual one) for the sequel as a result of this success.

It's strange, I've been easily able to find shawarma places where I live & work (Oasis Grill in SF I pass by every morning serves them and there are several joints throughout the East Bay) but I can imagine that it might be more obscure in places that lack a Middle Eastern food presence. But, I can say that if you'd at least had a Greek gyro before, it's similar to a shawarma.

Oh yeah... I kinda remember that part - it's been so long since I've read UXM. But yeah, it's one of the reasons why I was hyped that Samuel L. Jackson actually stepped out as Fury - as it was lifted from the comics.

Why? I feel like the 4 year wait for this one just made the payoff even sweeter.

If they started doing an Avengers every two years, the impact of it being a big EVENT would quickly wear off.

The east bay is pretty diverse in terms of food, it's not too unlike New York. I live in the valley, you will not find it so easily here unless you're looking for it.

Definitely. It's the build up and the satisfying paid off that made it all the better.

I don't want them to run the idea of The Avengers into the ground either- these guys should only come together when the threat is massive etc

Agreed on the East Bay having tons of options - it's nice to actually have choice in that regard. Also true about not being able to openly find a shawarma place unless looking for it. Ended up using Yelp to find a place after I watched it on Saturday and laughed that there were basically more than 20 easily within driving distance - I chose a place that had one of the higher ratings and was close by. Ironically, it seemed that everyone was ordering chicken shawarmas that the place ran out of it.
