EA DICE withdrew nearly every official server from BF3 (PS360)

i swear to god i made a post when the mw2 pc dedicated server fiasco was going on, that said basically "watch dedicated servers become the next big thing for consoles, then console gamers will line up to bend over for them", and here we are.

I think that as we see MP modes become increasingly more popular (cue "SP games aren't profitable, need MP to avoid churn" tin foil hat party) I think you'll see dedicated server rentals on console become a big thing, certainly.

Wouldn't surprise me if COD did it with BLOPS2 or the one after that. From a publishing standpoint if offers the consumer more "choice" and it offloads a cost onto the consumer. When games cost so much money to market and make, only to see the active userbase crumble after a few months or when the next big FPS comes out, it certainly makes sense for them.

I cant stop laughing at these posts, EA hate is such a riot mentality here lately and people were bitching in the insomniac thread... Someone give me some BF3 server stats ASAP.....

Turn the game on, plenty of servers for everyone.

I just wish that we were able to host our own dedicated servers without having to rent them from a third party on any platform.

Yeah, but rented by who? A player. So I guess my statement stands, a player has to rent the server for $30/month for anyone to play?

And? Welcome to pc gaming most of the time the official server are empty in most server list i looked in.

'' Battlefield 3 will no longer be playable online from March 4th, continue the war in Battlefield 4.''

Haha i can see Ea doing shit like that. They really build some good will mid way this gen with providing Deadspace and other awesome games and now they are really destroying the little bit of consumer relationship they had with the more informed gamers.

private server owners are the reason nobody plays on ea's servers:

servers are often rented by a group of friends/clans, they will always play on their servers, so the server is certain to have players on it. Official servers don't have that and matchmaking puts people in games with players / the server browers shows games with more players on them first. So since the official servers stay empty as long as nobody actively tries to fill them

If true, then this doesn't seem so bad. Sounds like EA isn't being the bad-guy we were expecting. I still think it would be interesting to see the fallout from a server blackout, though.

It also means popular games don't get shut down.

The only thing that annoys me with the current battlefield model is that there aren't any "unranked" servers anymore. This makes modding way more difficult and the servers are actually cheaper that way since you can set up your pc to be one (and who cares about stats anyway)

the old bf's are still running and there are still servers being rented for bf2

I for one am still upset that EA removed their official servers for Battlefield 2 and 2142 and have to rely on community run dedicated servers. What happened to justice?!

If they're really doing this though, they should offer incentives for people to rent servers.

As they're now essentially running the online and allowing other users to play, maybe rent a server for a month and get so and so % off an EA title?

the problem is that the servers are so popular that there is no need for EA to incentivise the server purchase.

it would be nice if they did that but it is EA after all.

after a 200 page thread about how IW is the devil for not offering private servers back during the release of mw2 this thread does make me laugh

Actually it is the solution. I've been gaming on PC for years and if I don't like the rules of a server I simply find one to my liking.

The server admin payed for the server and they can run it however they see fit.

You're forgetting the fact that anyone can set up a dedicated server on PC. There is no option but to buy through EA/DICE for this.

that isn't really true for bf3 and bad company 2. You can only rent servers from ea / ea-partners because all servers have to connect to the master server for stats.

so far DICE haven't released the files for "unranked servers" like there were in bf2/2142.

I normally understand EA complaints, but isn't this what happens when a lot of people rent?

I mean, BF3 needs X servers to serve its player base. When you rent a server, you gain admin control of one of the existing X servers. If you have Y custom servers, you're only left with X - Y official ones, as otherwise you have twice the number of servers as needed.

This is a company with the audacity to bend you over, fuck you up the ass, and then complain about how dry it is. Refreshingly honest. Stop giving them your money.

And when the rental numbers drop, do you think EA is going to pick up the slack again?

I mean there are 350 billion TF2 servers, and I'm pretty sure Valve still runs their own.

The thing that makes this shady is the rental part. If it was like OTHER online games, where you could run a server whenevs, it wouldn't matter. It's going "pay for the game, and also you have to pay us to run a server so you can play the game."

Ah really? Shows how long I've been out of the PC game!

EA shuts down official servers and everyone whines

EA allows for private servers so a game can last forever and everyone whines

Typical GAF

Game can last forever if MS were to take back control of the servers. EA could continue to sell private servers if they wanted, but MS would be in control of P2P, which would stay live for years.

really that's the best you can do??

how about supporting custom servers and providing official servers with vanilla-rules for your games?

also known as:common sense.

you don't let the custom servers be the main servers, unless its a 5+year old game.

Vanilla servers still exist on console.

you can't run a game like battlefield on a P2P- connection.

for what its worth: servers are still being rented for battlefield 2 and that game is from 2005, as long as people rent servers the game will be playable.

I stopped playing BF3 a couple months ago. Has private servers significantly changed the experience?

Yep, for the better. Being able to tweak options so you don't have to play Tehran Highway at all, ever, is fucking win.

I was under the impression that the official servers only vanish at a private server threshold(?). The only shitty thing about BF3 console is that you can't set up a private server that you own, you have to rent one if you want to offer a specific ruleset. Considering what console players are normally used to (janky as fuck p2p connections) this is still a massive step up, despite there not being a thousand vanilla EA servers available anymore.

Plus, you've gotta feel a bit silly for saying that renting a server on top of an xbox live gold subscription isn't cool. It's your fault that you pay for an xbox live gold subscription when there are alternatives. EA makes enough shitty decisions on their own that they shouldn't have to shoulder your shitty decisions as well and should be praised for even allowing consolites the ability to operate dedicated servers.

They probably have to knowing gamers they will probably organize a class action lawsuit.

Clearly those are the only two POSSIBLE choices you have as a publisher when supporting an online game.

Also: private servers you have to pay EA to run.
