i swear to god i made a post when the mw2 pc dedicated server fiasco was going on, that said basically "watch dedicated servers become the next big thing for consoles, then console gamers will line up to bend over for them", and here we are.
I think that as we see MP modes become increasingly more popular (cue "SP games aren't profitable, need MP to avoid churn" tin foil hat party) I think you'll see dedicated server rentals on console become a big thing, certainly.
Wouldn't surprise me if COD did it with BLOPS2 or the one after that. From a publishing standpoint if offers the consumer more "choice" and it offloads a cost onto the consumer. When games cost so much money to market and make, only to see the active userbase crumble after a few months or when the next big FPS comes out, it certainly makes sense for them.
