Personally, I've always found ridiculous to have non-supernatural characters beating those who are. To me, this is what should happen when someone, no matter how strong he is, faces a demon:
I know Dormammu is several orders of magnitude stronger than Mephisto, but so is Hulk compared to Black Panther. And even the Mephisto thing made kind of sense compared to the Silver Surfer thing. He's a truly cool character, there's no need to turn him into this monster capable of choke slamming Galactus

Marvel treats supernatural, paranormal, godlike and cosmic powers as simply being another tool in one's arsenal. That makes sense to me, for a comic book.

because other than hudlin attempting a character assassination on him, hes a well written character who needs to cuts the ties of a marriage that shouldnt have been. his recent series was going along great until a certain person got involved.

Had a nerdgasm when I saw Dormammu's trailer in MvC3. I dunno, I've always loved his design, especially the Defenders one. Would love to see him as the behind-the-scenes villain for a Dr. Strange movie.
Shame it seems there's still a long way to go before Strange gets his own movie.

Well, besides they're always seen as superhumanly strong (perhaps not on Hulk's level, but definitely stronger than, say, Iron Man) and how they are capable of fucking everything up with a thought, I've always seen silly to see a street level character capable of ripping the heart out of Mephisto.
There's a reason Dr. Strange is usually kept away from big events with something (and usually magical), because he's too damn overpowered. This is the guy whose rogues gallery is made up almost entirely by people who can blow up planets at will. I simply, personally, think it makes no sense to have this kind of villain defeated like that. And I understand, not everyone thinks this way, but to me, seeing Black Panther do that to a guy who can rewrite reality is... off.
Plus, introducing Strange would definitely help make any victory over any overpowered cosmic villain much more feasible.
Don't the suits cost over a billion dollars each or something? I think that's about the price in the comics.

Well first of all Tony's pretty adamant about not giving the tech away in Iron Man 2. The only person he's allowing to have it right now is his most trusted friend, Rhodes.
Second Nat and Clint are specialists in infiltration, hand-to-hand combat and small firearms/long range weapons, none of which really translate well to bulky flying armor suits.
I leave this thread for a couple hours, and come back to Black Panther slander? Can't leave you guys alone at all. I swear.
I would like to point out that Mephisto basically shrugged off Panther ripping out his heart. The scene is more meant to show how fearless Panther is, rather than how powerful he is. Like Tizoc said, the real defeat of Mephisto was done through planning (those pages were part of a multi chapter arc).
Also, I'm one of the biggest Panther fanboys around, and even I think the armbar was stupid.

Well, that's why I said it made more sense than the Silver Surfer thing, but you have to admit that that was done to give Panther some badass points which is part of why some people were complaining about him.
I simply said I find hard to believe magic/cosmic characters, who have a lot more tools to play with, can be beaten like that. Though in all honestly I wanted to post the Dormammu scan cuz I'm a big fan and think people don't talk enough about Dr. Strange, considering he's been mentioned a couple of times to get his own movie!

Because non supernatural beings are bound to the rules of the universe, even a comics universe.
Supernatural creatures are not.
In their prime before the backlash against the occult, supernatural baddies were the nastiest.
They could possess the strongest heroes, invade their dreams or just bind them or blast them with ancient powers and energies.
Even Superman is a bitch to supernatural enemies.
Then came the "demons and magic are bad!" and DC and Marvel jobbed out their formerly major powers, or changed the stupidly.
Then the whole high tech hero and hero with guns became the thing.
Eventually they got over it but you will still rarely see it like it used to be.
It's the Batman fanboys, they always ruin everything.
Noooooo, it is the "ok this is a bit to far fetched even for comic books" crowd.
Has nothing to do with Batman at all.
I get that giving everybody a suit of armor makes Iron Man less special, but I also like the idea of Tony making suits for everybody for worst case scenarios. Hawkeye and Widow were way outside of their element in The Avengers - armor for both of them would have perhaps been more realistic in terms of matching them evenly with the alien invaders.

I never thought about it, but Storm's appearance basically was the herald for "Most Dangerous Man Alive"'s demise. It was like Storm > two crappy event tie ins and a point one back to back > canceled.

Just got in from my second (and final; I'm content now for a while) theatrical viewing. Loved it just as much as the first time, and I can CONFIRM two things for GAF:
1. RE: Galaga man. Tony DOES call him "Batman", not "that man". Awesome.
2. RE: Coulson fanboys in denial over his death. I caught a dialogue exchange I missed the first time. After Coulson dies, Fury speaks to Hill over his walkie. After that convo, he gets another call informing him that "medical is on the way". To which Fury replies "they're already here. They called it". Boom, deadshot.

The "medical team" that called it was working for The Hand. They are going to revive him as the baddy in Iron Man 3.

Wow..... I cannot imagine this movie not having good legs. Its one thing to have close friends I trust tell me its great, but I saw it today. Goddamn that was awesome. A lot of little things they did were just fantastic. Especially with the Hulk, man they nailed his character and actually made me enjoy watching him. Even Hawkeye or whatever was fun to watch, I didn't think there was any WAY they were going to make me enjoy watching a freaking boring archer on screen. Same with Captain America. I just liked them all, movie was fantastic.

It's the worst thing about both characters and was only done so Marvel could get some cheap pr from putting two of comic's most popular black characters together. Shit is dumb.
I was listening especially for it, because it sounded like Batman the first time, and lo and behold, it was Batman.
Probably just a fun jab. I wouldn't look too deep into it.

....that makes no sense they are out classed by loki...in the comics 95% of all heroes are , he's a monster, but the foot soldiers/chitari they arent out of their league so they are of use. Not to mention Hawkeye is as useful as his gear, so his arrowheads can be configured/modified for a situation. Same goes for BW shes trained in a plethora of weapons, all of a sudden explosive rounds and thermal charges like hawkeye deployed are more than useful. I could see a point IF all they did was hand to hand combat but they are trained in weapons , explosives, infiltration, recon and vehicles. Its not like the alien invaders were the celestials, or the shi'ar imperial guard.
I will never get this argument the avengers takes everyone for different needs. I could see if the Destroyer showed up with one thing in mind, crush EVERYTHING ok then its a problem only Thor , Ironman, and Hulk could contend with. But a full scale incursion of soldiers that are flesh and bone???

My money is on RDJ mumbling like he usually does. There is no universe in which him saying "Batman" in that context would ever happen.
