Marvel's The Avengers |OT| (Dir. Joss Whedon) [Spoilers unmarked]

Thankfully, Kevin Feige, Joe Johnston, and Joss Whedon respect the character and gave us Cap the way he's meant to be.

Yes, definitely. I can't stand any of the "EXTREME EDGY" Ultimates characters. I'll give them that Ultimates is a good foundation for the films because the story is less convoluted than the decades of 616 history, but the characters are awful. Captain America is supposed to make you feel proud to be human, he's always there to give you someone to look up to. Ultimate Cap just makes me feel shitty. I would never, ever want to be him.

Feels good man

Hell yes. Let's go $1b.

1) They're two different characters - they're allowed to be different.

2) Ultimate Cap is a good man. What exactly did he really do that was 'bad'? Beat up a wife-beater in a back alley? Make a wise-crack about France while saving the world? Get grumpy with his girlfriend?

He's not a different character, he's a different interpretation of an existing character, in a universe filled with new interpretations of existing characters which are fairly similar to the originals (at least in terms of the major players). And when you stray too far from defining points of that original character, things get awkward and you can't really call it a decent portrayal any more. Ultimates Cap has done lots of things that 616 Cap would never do, like the stuff you mentioned (excluding the France thing, I know a joke when I see one). He also misses the point- Cap has always been a good man before a good American, something Ultimates Cap doesn't always adhere to. Captain America needs to be likeable 24/7, 365 days a year. End of.

I get the character, it's a good idea, but it's hardly Captain America.

A lot of people have trouble with that in these kind of films. You KNOW they're not going to kill off Tony, but Tony doesn't know shit. Obviously he's not going to die, but if you connect with the character and the actor and writing portray him correctly (which they certainly do in this film), then you feel for what the character is going through, not what the movie is telling you is happening.

It's certainly not emotional to see Iron Man go through that portal knowing that they'd never kill off Tony. It is emotional to see Iron Man go through the portal and see Tony suddently realizing "Oh shit, I'm going to die." I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Pepper was going to pick up the phone, not to see if Tony was going to make it back.

You know I just thought of this but doesn't the Iron Man suit double as a space suit as well? Or maybe that's just his newer suits from the comics.

All his movie suits are shown to be pressurized and capable of operating in at least the upper atmosphere (and underwater). It's possible he lost suit pressure due to being shot up in the big fight, but I don't think that's the reason he passed out - loss of suit pressure should prevent him from flying at all.

I'm pretty sure his suit can operate for a while in space; he was just out of power anyway from dragging the nuke, killing loads of aliens, and being a badass (I imagine the whole "lock-on-to-wrists-attach-to-tony-while-in-freefall" trick consumes considerable battery life).

He can breath for a short while in space or in the ocean. But he has this:

Will let him stay in space for prolonged periods of time.

That and I seriously doubt that Tony actually expected to have to go into deep space to deliver a nuke payload so probably he'll add something for space travel just in case in his other suits.

I'm pretty sure they showed Tony underwater in his first scene to specifically demonstrate that the Iron Man suit is pressurized and has its own air supply, so that him flying into space later on didn't seem as weird.

He passed out because his suit ran out of power.

I'm curious to know how much of a drain on the suit was from Tony doing his impression of Jonah. Looked like he was fine but that was a lot of artillery he had to use up to bring down the Leviathan.

Yeah, I think it was this along with using that red laser that drained his suit. J even said as much as he tried to use the laser to cut through the worms armor.

Nice little touch of having that laser being usable more than once in the mark 7, I just hope they don't use it as a go-to weapon for everything. It's crazy powerful, so it needs to be a massive drain on the suit or he'd just use it all day long.

Is there a gif out there of the spin move in IM2? Love that moment.

this, i know Iron Man 3 is being made and they wouldn't kill Tony but damn when Tony was calling Pepper and she didn't pick up and he went through the portal i was :O D: D: :( :( "MAKE IT BACK" lol

Hulk grab is still B^)

Surprisingly hard to find gifs of that scene or maybe I just suck at finding them.
So weird, you'd think that would have been heavily giffed. Thanks for looking!

I'm hoping there's one with fewer skipped frames, the animation in that part of the film is just buttery smooth and these gifs kind of butcher that aspect.

I should re-watch this. It's really hard to see how IM spun around. Not to mention my focus was on War Machine with all his guns blazing. Loved how his minigun would shoot independently from where he was looking.

I am expecting it to make about 100 million in Japan. Japan loves movies in this category, and has a huge american population due to the military bases. Yeah going in full strength for this.

Also SM3 did that over its entire time. Avengers made that amount in about two weeks.

If it makes an extra 100 million, that's a nice bump for sure.

Iron Man 2 only made $12.8M total in Japan. I think Spider-Man is the only popular superhero in Japan, and Spider-Man 3 made $58.3M there.

Ok... I'm calling that it's made 50% of it's money in this opening week, based on the final percentages for movies like TDK (44.7) and Hunger Games (49.7). If so, it'll reach 540m domestic or a little higher than TDK, but at it's current 1:2 ratio of domestic-international box office, land at:

1.6 billion worldwide total

This might end up being conservative.

Mm-hmm... Though I'm curious to see if there'll be a bump once Japan gets the movie in August. I was speaking to my Uncle's friends from Japan - they're hating that they have to wait so long to watch the film.

How has Japan responded to Marvel films in the past?

I actually don't know off the top of my head, though at least two people in the thread posted some figures. I mean, even if we discount the...fanart, there's at least an audience built-in for seeing this movie.

It's a shame that so many readily hand wave Black Widow just because she's "the girl." All this hubbub about the Hulk, but for me, if any character deserves to be the "breakout" of the Avengers, it was her.

Hey man, I'm on the BW train:

I thought she was actually better this time around than in IM2. After reading her little blurb in the Art of the Avengers, she was training with the guys to be able to pull off her fight scenes and really wanted to show off. I applaud her for wanting to do so, I thought she did great really.

i dont think many people care for the non superpowered of the avengers. hawkeye isnt looked upon very well too.

Which is a shame since most people are willing to suspend belief when reading the comics but tend to overlook them when portrayed on the big screen. At my screenings, there where a lot of 'Whoa cool" when Hawkeye was shooting shit and they loved BW's fight with the gangsters.
