And it's just the second weekend!

Avengers will pass Spider-man 3 on Saturday to have the highest foreign gross ever for a comic book film. It should pass the Dark Knight by Wednesday or so to become the highest grossing comic book movie ever worldwide. All within 3 weeks of release (and less than 2 domestically)

EDIT: I thought Spider-man 3 had 570M or so overseas. Turns out it made 554M. Avengers will pass it today.

I wanted to watch Avengers tonight, it was sold out. Went to another theater, an hour earlier mind you, sold out while waiting in line. This is its third weekend here goddamn it.

Anyway, I will be skipping the TDKR box office shenanigans unfortunately, the movie opens one week later here, I have to avoid spoilers at all costs. Surely tards will post unmarked spoilers, bootleg gifs, and such other crap.

SPOILER: The movie is awesome.

Anybody else think this will probably end up as the third highest grossing movie of all time?

Seems almost guaranteed at this point.

I'd say it's a lock, both domestically and worldwide. Remember that it still has Japan coming up.

Japan might not be worth much, other than Spider-man, super hero films do really poorly there. The Iron Man films made less than $10M, the Dark Knight made about $15M. Maybe the Avengers will break out, but even $40-50M would be optimistic. Compare that to HP7.5 which made close to $125M in Japan.

However, the Avengers are now slightly ahead of Pirates 4 overseas after the same time period. Pirates made $69M in its third overseas weekend for a $600M total. Avengers will match that as long as it doesn't drop more than 55% this weekend (drops for holdovers last weekend average 44%). Since Pirates hit 800M I think the Avengers will finish with at least that number.

If the Avengers makes 800M overseas, it will pass HP7.5 for third place worldwide if it passes TDK for third place domestically. Seems like a pretty good bet at this point.

Theatre was fucking PACKED tonight. I had to park at the Cosco across the street. Unreal. Avengers was totally sold out.

Yeah, I think it's gonna over perform again like last weekend. I knew people that went to see it again. Personally, I can't watch a movie twice in a short period of time.

I went twice last weekend, and while I still liked the film the second time, the experience wasn't nearly as good. Didn't help that I went from a midnight premiere crowd to a Sunday at noon crowd. Either way, I think I will avoid seeing the film again until at least next May (on Blu-ray)

I have never seen a movie in theater more than once. Usually I only watch comedies several times.

On topic, I think Nikki Finke is lowballing it again. Just like she did it last week. Her first estimate for Friday was ~65M and she kept raising it up until she was close to 80M. The final tally came in at 80.8M.

I wont be surprised if this did 30M today.
Just like clock work. Nikki's numbers are now up at 27M and 95M weekend. :D

100M is lock like a motha fucking RPG on a helicarrier.

Bet you expected a TDKR quote here.

All valid points, but I think it can be pretty big there for the same reasons it's been everywhere else.

It's kind of hilarious just how severely the Spider-Man films slaughter every other SH film in Japan. SM3 made $58m.

I think what will hurt Japan the most is that 3 months from now the movie still won't be open there. It won't benefit at all from the worldwide hype.
Japan seems to often get blockbuster long after others (having to do with national holidays in July, I believe), but never seemed to harm BO receipts in Japan before. We'll see though.

That tweet was made yesterday at 9pm EST before the evening showings were even started on the west coast.

Current estimates are pointing towards 29-30M as I predicted on Thursday from the Wednesday numbers. I think that Disney will bump up the Friday gross if it is short of $30M but over $29.5M. If Avengers gets $30M on Friday they can brag about hitting $300M in 8 days. TDK took 10.

Either way, $100M should happen. $370M in 10 days. Ridiculous. Avengers will pass HPP7.5's total run by Tuesday. It will over take the Hunger Games for first place this year before its third weekend.

So this weekend will be like last one: Avengers' numbers will just keep climbing with each estimate. I do hope it does $100 million this weekend. Just for another ridiculous record.

Looks like $100m is in the bag now. The Avengers is cannibalizing everything else.

That article was bad for a few reasons. First, if you are going to update your projections throughout the weekend, update your totals. The Avengers is going to be close to $100M this weekend, yet the domestic cume by the end of Sunday will be $355.... interesting math. Secondly, Adding the weekend's projected domestic total to Thursday's overseas number (minus any weekend projection) to get a worldwide total of $888M makes zero sense. Either leave out the worldwide number, or project for overseas grosses as well. The movie will not be anywhere near $888M by the end of Sunday. Maybe $988M.

Usually I just read the first paragraph and scroll to the bottom, cause I can't tell which is the updated info. lol

Just think....., in some nightmarish alternate reality
Battleship
is doing these amazing numbers at the box office.

Those poor bastards.

But who seriously thought that Dark Shadows was going to any real 'damage' the Avengers even if it hadn't turned into this mega hit?

Even with a sub 30 million dollar opening I can still see Dark Shadows playing well with older and female audiences over the next few weeks. And this feels like a film that will do better with International audiences anyway. Pirates 4 did massive business in Japan and this could well do the same.

Dark Shadows will play a lot closer to the Tourist than Pirates 4. That said, the Tourist did alright overseas, and I wouldn't be surprised if Dark Shadows breaks $200M OS as well.

She's not known for being so great at projecting the full weekend this early. To be more exact, she's projecting that Friday was ~28M.

She also hates Disney. There's a rumor of a past between her and Eisner involving kinky shit or something that made her forever want to destroy the company even after he got the boot. Just look at her demonizing of John Carter.

The hell? Eisner could do way better than fucking Nikke Finke.

Awful woman.

Also, wanted to see Avengers on IMAX 3D this weekend. Guess what's playing on the IMAX screens now? Tim Burtons latest shitty movie no one is seeing. Dumbasses.

The next box office thread better have something witty in the title about how Whedon's still casting a dark shadow over all competition or something. :)

Well at least Disney can put John Carter in the rear view mirror now.

Surely you jest? While the massive amount of cash that the Avengers will bring in (all that merchandising mang!) will mop up all of John Carters red ink the fact the film was such a huge bomb will influence decision making at Disney for the next decade.

If you thought Disney was cautious and risk averse before you ain't seen nothing yet.

Avengers continues to wipe TDK from the record books...

It had 16 records prior to Avengers opening... It's down to 9 and when all is said and done it will be to 2 or maybe 3 records... (Non-Opening Monday,Tuesday, and ~maybe fastest to 450M if Avengers slows down, though that seems entirely unlikely).

Avengers already has 19 records (some are dubious as they come in clumps by starting as well as it did and 7 day gross is the same as opening week).

Yep.. He's upped his estimate...

And in a couple of years, another movie will come out and break all the records that the Avengers set. Then a couple of years later the records will be broken again. etc..
