Just ignore all that stuff entirely and use Microsoft Security Essentials.

True. Microsoft are the only ones that have an actual interest in combating malware, and MSE does a great job.

McAfee and co. need malware so people buy their software. I wouldn't be surprised if many types of malware originated from the labs of Norton and so on.

GAF, some help.

I ordered a Sony Vaio Model VPCEB390X CTO a while ago, and I had the option of choosing between two different graphics: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD, or an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 GPU (1GB VRAM) [add $100.00] . Not having an interest in gaming at the time, I chose the former, and now regret it.

Is it possible to install a dedicated graphics card in this laptop? I'm not too worried about taking the laptop apart and putting it back, I'm just wondering if it is possible and if I will be successful.

Btw the CPU is Intel® Core™ i5-460M processor (2.53GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.80GHz.

You're stuck with the Intel... Laptop GPUs soldered onto the mobo.
Hell if that were an option I'd get my new laptop now.

Sorry for taking so long to respond... weight isn't that important in hindsight. Budget is around $1500 or less. As a reminder, I'm primarily interested in screen quality. Thanks again.

Take one of the 15" Sagers (NP6165 or NP9150), and add the 95% color gamut matte LCD option under screens upgrades. It's the best non-IPS panel available in the entire industry.

Of the good laptop brands, which one tends to score highest for reliability?

I did buy an ASUS 4 years back, and I had a brief problem (easily fixed at the shop), and had some issues with the screen (due to having to be rough with it for a year), but otherwise it's run well.

I don't play high-end graphically heavy games much, but I do need a laptop that can run at heat, quad-core at minimum, decent graphics card, and RAM. I tend to play TBS games and other timesink type games.
Clevo, then Alienware, then MSI, then ASUS

Sadly K.Jack, it looks like the 11.6'' NP6110 doesn't give us the choice to enhance the screen. Do you know if the default option is good enough ?

My patience is starting to wear thin with D3 only a few hours away.
Just how much longer until the 7970M is available? It's starting to look like the end of May.

I was thinking of going with this MSI. 2k shipped, and would have it by Wednesday.

Going with G75VW- BBK5 from bestbuy, will add crucial m4 and more ram eventually. Any impression for this bestbuy model or any other lap top that would you recommend for similar price?

Read up on the last few pages, and your posts have been really informative, K.Jack. Thanks for all your contributions. When do you think you'll get a new OP up?

I'm looking to get a new gaming laptop over my current 3-yr old Toshiba, with the intention of playing D3 and GW2, but I don't need to play them at high/max settings. Just looking for a machine that can run them capably at medium settings without noticeable frame drops.

What would the best GPU/processor be for a $600-800 laptop, with the above games in mind? Willing to wait to June to purchase as I don't really have time to play D3 atm, so if there's anything coming out in the pipeline (that would reduce the price of budget laptops), I can wait. Also, is it more important to get a better GPU or a quad core processor, if I had to decide between the two for budget reasons?

It's very, very average.

Nah, spending $2k for a rebranded GTX 570M is criminal. Just take the Best Buy G75 w/ Kepler GTX 660M, if you must buy today.

Btw the official word from Sager, as of just this morning, is that 7970M equipped models start shipping tomorrow.

I think that's a good buy, for the price.

Hey. I'm stalling hard on the new thread, hoping the dual core Ivy Bridge models come soon, so I have something to put in the budget range. There's literally nothing worth buying right now, @ $800 or less, other than the 11.6" Clevo.

Fortunately the dual cores are supposed to be coming in June, and machines equipped with them willl be shipping with next-gen GPUs as well, so if you can't up the budget to $900~$1k and can hold out for a bit longer, I would do so.

Just got off the phone with them. It's a go got the 7970. I regret not placing an order sooner, because all the 7970s are spoken for. The rep did give me a new eta. So I went ahead and placed my order.

Sager NP9170:

i7-3610QM
AMD 7970m
16GB - DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory
750gb (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
Sager - Intel® Ultimate-N 6300

Can you plug these into a bigger display. Like let's say you get a suped-up rig that supports a 1920x1080 screen, do they usually have some kind of HDMI out that you can use to hook up to a bigger LCD or plasma? And does this introduce any signifcant lag?

I'll be using this computer for high-end gaming and high definition (potentially 4K at some point) video editing through programs like Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

What's the closest I can get to this in a laptop?

A little late but I wasn't able to buy the ASUS.

Money fell through and I chose to just get my old shitty Vaio fixed. (Only set me back 170).

Still I would like to thank those who helped me out.

At the very least I now know what I want and need.

Plus i learned a shitton about graphics cards.

So thanks for all the help...

I'll probably be back in a few months...lol.

GAF, could you recommend me a good cooling pad for an Asus G60JX ( an baffling example of poor heat management).
- I don't care about quiet, I just want to stop having to put my hands on an iron every time I want to play.

Someone recommended me this http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-Notebook-R9-NBC-8PCK-G/dp/B003ZMF27G/ref=pd_cp_e_0

But I know little about cooling pads, so I'll like a second opinion.
Thanks

edit:
I'm currently using a Cooler Master Notepal X2 Notebook Cooler and it does nothing.

What exactly is your new ETA? I haven't been able to order mine yet, due to waiting for the insurance company of a friend's job to write me a settlement check (he spilled a pitcher of water on my current machine).

Nearly every modern notebook, outside of the lowest-end budget machines, comes with an HDMI port. I've never heard anyone report significant lag, and I've gamed through my TV many times and never felt any myself.

I'll be using this computer for high-end gaming and high definition (potentially 4K at some point) video editing through programs like Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

What's the closest I can get to this in a laptop?

15.6" Sager NP9150
17.3" Sager NP9170
CPU = all available CPUs auto-overclock to 3Ghz+ on all 4 cores; if you want manual overclocking, you'd have to take the i7-3920XM; there are no 6-core options
Memory = pick best option
GPU = AMD Radeon 7970M - this is literally a desktop 7870 with 15% slower core frequency
Optical = Blu-ray available
HDD = many options available

Total: ranging from $1600 to $2600, depending on CPU choice

There's also the Alienware M17x R4. Same options as the Sager machines, just add a few hundreds to the total. It's one standout feature is that it has HDMI-IN, meaning you can plug a gaming console into the notebook, and use the screen as a monitor/TV.

I've only ever heard good things about the Zalman NC1500. Also check out the highly reviewed NZXT Cryo LX.

The second shipment is due on the 24th. According to the rep, if I ordered today I should be able to land one. If I'm lucky I should have my laptop by the second week of June. The build phase will take 10 days (per the rep) and then shipping. I waited this long so...

I almost have my dream Alienware configured. My question is, do I really need the 1920X1080 display, or will the 1600X900 display do?

If I can get by with the lower res, I'll do it and save some money that can be put somewhere else, like dual hard drives.

For screen 15" or above, you need 1080p.

Lol those long quoted build times. They quoted me 10 business days last time, right around the craze of the 6970M launch day, and mine shipped the day after the Paypal payment cleared. I'll be shocked if yours really takes that long.

I will end up holding off until the 680M is revealed, I'm sure.

Not on 17", you just don't want to do it. It would be really useful for gaming at 900p, but inconvenient for everything else, even just internet browsing with multiple windows. A friend has an Envy 17 with its default HD+ (900p) display, and side by side with mine, the difference in screen real estate is massive.

The worse is that, even now, the 17.3" HD+ screens are very mediocre, basically because no laptop manufacturer has requested a decent one (helps with the up-sell). Viewing angles, contrast ratio, and overall picture quality are just not what you want from the screen in a $1500+ custom machine bought for playing games with pretty graphics.

I've always thought it's REALLY scummy of Dell to not include 1080p in there as the default LCD. Fucking smart ass cash grab, but complete and shameful bullshit.

Also, the main thin with Dell is to never buy their RAM upgrades. Take the default config and DIY at a fourth of what they're asking. Right now a 2x4GB kit is going for less than $40 on Newegg. That's 16GB for $75, while Dell is asking $225 for their gear. Yeah.

Which of these laptops have the better specs for the price?

Asus_K43SJ_2330 ($651.90)

I currently have a Dell N5010 but the damn thing just keeps overheating and shuts down when I play my games. :(

I think 610m is just the rebranded version of the 520m. The 520m performs slight better than the 610m according to notebookcheck.

I'm not sure which one is the better spec/price.

I say neither. The 520M and 610M are indeed the same card, and they have less than of year of gaming left, if you want to continue to play modern, currently being released products.

I'd hold out until June, for the new low-end gaming notebooks to appear. Seriously, Ivy Bridge's HD 4000 is faster than the 520M/610M. You're basically lighting that $600 on fire, as far as I can tell.

Can't you open the Inspiron, and reapply thermal paste to the graphics card?

I can build and dismantle a desktop pc, but when it comes to laptops I'm a complete noob. I think I'll just head on over to the nearest Dell service center and have them do it for me.

Is this the same one you have?

My brother has this same exact model, minus dedicated GPU, and just a few weeks ago we found this video and opened his up because we needed to take out the HDD.

I can understand if you don't want to do it though, especially from a warrant standpoint. I hate laptop designs which force you to take the whole thing apart, just to access the bare essentials. With mine, I can get to the CPU, GPU, RAM, and both SSD/HDD bays, just by taking off the bottom cover.

Questions about gaming laptops:

1) Do any of these high power configurated laptops allow for HDMI out to a TV should I want to utilize a bigger screen when home?

2) What's the best cooling solution to keep a gaming laptop from melting?

3) Are there any gaming laptops with processors fast enough/overclockable enough to run Dolphin?

1. All gaming laptops have HDMI ports.

2. I only recommend a machine which can cool itself adequately. Cooling pads are banned. Buy a cheap wooden lap table, if you want to use it on your lap/bed/etc.

3. All Ivy Bridge quad cores auto-overclock to at least 3Ghz, more than enough for Dolphin.

Thanks! What kind of budget would I be looking for with that? $1,500+? Also, how does one tell if a laptop cools itself well when you buy it?

I was looking at Ultrabooks for the portability, but 90% of the time i'm near an outlet. Is there a gaming laptop that can still last a decent time on battery if just in general use? I dont want anything over 15" and not looking at something extra thick/heavy.

Does all of this exist in a laptop that can decently play games? Not looking to run max everywhere, just something that is capable (i really want it for Diablo), max out around ~$1100

The new Sony Vaio S 15 might be your ally. It's pretty thin, is being called a ultrabook, and wields a 640m LE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0jPDF1wUeQ&feature=relmfu

But Sony has sometimes underclocked their cards in the past, so wait until reviews to see actual performance. 640M LE is already a downclocked card, and on top of that there are also an inferior version around running the hotter FERMI, than the new Kepler.

I' am looking for 13-inch Ultraportables as well, with gaming potential. Looking for good backlit keyboard, dedicated graphics, not bigger than 13-inch and with as good battery and performance as possible.

Gigabyte:

Has dual vents - 640m - Is thin. Is 14-inch. This one looks really good. Have no idea if GB is liable but specs look good. Every machine should have dual vents: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpPbMos9rfg&feature=channel&list=UL

Asus UX32 VD - 620m graphics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVfwhq58zOs < pretty sexy

Sony Vaio Sa - 640m LE.. no word on CPU yet. cant imagine quadcore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGsORiQL7bM&feature=channel&list=UL

I was only going to get it with 8 gigs of RAM, but if I can save $75 and upgrade later, I'll go that route. I just hope 6 gigs of RAM is fine in the meantime.

I was also going to get the Mobile Edge backpack, but I can get it cheaper at Amazon (about $70, $30 cheaper than retail), along with some other stuff I want (Logitech G500 mouse, Xbox 360 wireless controller with the PC dongle, a Belkin surge protector with cord concealing features).

If anyone has a better suggestion for a carry case that can fit an M17x, I'm all ears.

I was interested in the MSI 570M but just read a review that it can't maintain 30fps on max settings 1080p for Crysis 2 so that seems like a dealbreaker for me.

The Sony and Gigabyte look nice. When are these coming out? June with the rest of the "ultrabooks"? I'm anxious to see how the discrete graphics works out.

How is this laptop I'm looking at for $800?

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0388092

i7-3610QM processor
8GB RAM
Nvidia GT 630M

Mainly worried about that graphics card, since I've been reading there's quite a difference between the 660M and the 630M...but then the only laptop I can find with both an Ivy Bridge quad-core processor and the 660M is this 17.3" Asus laptop for $1,250:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...rive/5176239.p?id=1218621250769&skuId=5176239

Is that $450 price difference worth the graphics card upgrade + screen size?

I actually have no idea. I have never seen a Gigabyte laptop on sale in Europe.

I think Sony is next month.

I am looking at the new Sony 13-inch... it has almost no vents? there are vents on the lower sides? small vents, and then one in the back!?

thats not a lot of ventilation for an i7 AND a graphics card like 640m LE.

640M LE could have performance all over the place.

Sager NP9170:

i7-3610QM
AMD 7970m
16GB - DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory
750gb (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
Sager - Intel® Ultimate-N 6300

I've had a laptop drop on me. Does the SSD from these hybrids protect against that? I assume it's worth it and could I run windows 7 from the SSD and put everything else on the real one? So if I drop it, can still run the PC? So many things are going to the cloud, I'm not sure I need that much space on my HD. Seems like a good option.

BTW, is 8GB of ram top of the line? Those sagers offer 12 and 16 GB for not much more but is that excessive now and how long before we get there for PC gaming? 2 years?

Either way, just found out I got my signing bonus. Gonna make a splash soon. :)

Edit: nevermind, dug up some info on those hybrid drives and realize it's not what I was thinking.

Besides emulation, what games are you playing and what settings do you desire? Modern games @ 1080p + high/max settings for 2 to 3 years will cost $1500+.

And there are no current-gen gaming machines with cooling problems, so there's no need to worry.

The 630M is a rebranded 540M. The GTX 660M is 3x faster. The 540M is medium settings @ 720p, the 660M is high @ 1080p.

Yeah, it's worth the money. A last gen card which was low-tier last gen is not where you want to invest your money.

No game is using 4GB right now, let alone 8GB. Maybe with the next-gen consoles we'll hit 4GB.

Jack you were right about the exaggerated waiting process. I did however goof up (wrong payment method) and had to correct it. I'm assuming that will set me back a day or two.. Anyway, it looks like I'll have my new hardware no later than E3 week.

HELPPPPP!!!! So I just got my Asus G75 today... and is this normal?

hey guys, i kinda need a new laptop. i would like to wait for W8 but i don't really have the time. so can anyone recommend me a laptop for less than $500? all i want is for it to be SKINNY. for the past 4+ years i ve been using a heavy laptop and ive had enough of that. Any help is greatly appreciated

Well, my Mac finally broke on me. Apple Store told me I would have to replace the logicboard to get my audio back, and fuck paying $450 for that piece of shit.

Thus, I need a new computer. I can probably get around $700 or $800 to get myself a new PC laptop. I've been out of the market for a while regarding solid laptops. Can anyone provide me a solid Asus (doesn't have to be exclusive to this brand) laptop that I can get around my price range?

Well, I've run into a massive problem. I managed to get the price down to $2,258 for the M17x, and presented it to my parents for approval.

The only two words out of their mouths were "uh, no!"

I'm going to have to compromise the hell out of this one if I want to get it. Any alternatives with the 7970M for uber-cheap? They consider $1,000 to be expensive.

The closest you can get the laptop with 7970m is the Sager 9150 for around 1500. If your parents are hesistant paying 1000 for a laptop, then you need to convince them why you need it. Are you a soon to be college student? If so, you need a good laptop that will help serve you well that will last you 4 years.

I'd recommend Sager 6165. It's lighter by at least a pound or two and it costs $1059 with Matte Screen, 750GB 7200rpm HDD, and Ivy bridge 3610 upgrades. The graphical performance won't be as good as 7970M, but it's great nevertheless for a laptop.

P.s. You still need an OS for those machines because they don't initially come with one. :p

Hey everyone,
I'm thinking of getting a new laptop since mine is dying slowly on my.
What I'm looking for is something under a $1000 with a 13"-14" display. I don't want to play anything new on it, but I want it to be able to run games like Portal(the first).

Right now I'm considering the Lenovo Edge(E430) for $760:
Intel Core i5-2450M Processor (3M Cache, 2.50GHz)
Intel HD Graphics (WWAN or mSATA capable)
6 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)
500GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm

What do you guys think?
