Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

Curious, has anyone with an Asus Z77 mobo and a Kepler used the Lucid Virtu MVP feature? I'm curious if it really helps with tearing and stuttering.

I haven't used it my self, but Virtu does support Kepler, and you get all the benefits of using it with any other cards.
The virtual vsync has been surpassed by Nvidia's frame rate target though imo.

New bench below. Changed 4xMSAA to 8xMSAA. I don't know, I never use 8xMSAA in games anyways so I didn't see the point. For reference heres my specs:

Core i7 940 overclocked to 3.6ghz
6 GB OCZ RAM in triple channel
EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 OC (still at whatever factory settings Gigabyte OCs to)
120 GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
Corsair HX650 PSU

Sigh

My specs:
Core i7 920 OCed to 3.6ghz
6GB OCZ Ram
ASUS P6T
EVGA GTX 680 SC, OCed to 1252gpu 3524mem
120GB OCZ Agility 3
Corsair TX750

Results:

Now I feel a lot better :D

I have a 2007 Mac Pro.

I wish I could get an NVIDIA card for it, but it doesn't boot to 64bit so they don't work :(

I'd love to have some CUDA support.

The Asus card has to launch this week right? Or is the card everyone is waiting for just vaporware? :( Come on, I wanna buy a card already!

Ha. Tweaking never stops...but, IMO Prime95 is not a valid OC verification tool. That's the difference - your stability versus mine. LinPack/IntelBurnTest will find problems Prime95 cannot.

Like I said, TJunction is 95 C on Sandy Bridge, so I'm well within the thermal profile for the processor. There's no problem with this setup other than people that are scared of voltage. It's heat that is the problem. And like I said, I'm OK there. If anything, I'll keep going up. Nothing wrong with 1.5v. I can run at 5.0 GHz plus but it doesn't pass LinPack/IntelBurnTest.

I can give my personal experience that overvolting a CPU will decrease its lifespan, and performance. I don't know if this has changed with Sandy Bridge, but I ran a QX9770 at 1.475 volts for about 2 years. Towards the end of its use, I started BSODing for no reason, even though it was stable for almost 2 years. The only way to stop the blue screens was to downclock or overvolt more.

Also, 5C within TJMax? I feel uncomfortable if I get within 30C. Also, where do you dump all this heat? Your office must be unbearably hot.

Although it's very possible, your PSU or motherboard voltage control may have very well degraded, resulting in your CPU not receiving as much voltage as usual after 2 years.

iirc 1.3625V was the higher safe end for voltage.

Not surprised if it degraded at that voltage at high speeds. Stock should still be 100% fine though.

Yeah, that's totally possible too. I was pretty convinced at the time that it was due to my relatively high voltage running 24/7. I remember doing some research, and reading an article about how overvolting can degrade the inner components or something. Since then, I've been pretty reserved about my voltage, except for when I benchmark -- which I don't run 24/7.

Yeah, I've never followed recommended voltages, since I don't really think they account for extreme overclocking when they come up with them. For instance, the 980x's recommended safe voltages are .8-1.375, but most people run 1.4v+ with few problems.

I just don't want sk3tch blowing up that awesome machine due to stressing it too hard. :P

Could I Install any of these new video cards on my PC Board? Right now it has a 9500 GT video card but I want to improve my PC performance for Final Fantasy 14.

My rule is essentially: am I ready/willing to replace this CPU yet? Then overvolt the hell out of it. Once I near the end of my 2500K's life and I feel I'm ready to upgrade, I'll probably try to get the most out of it and maybe delay my purchase if I get favorable results.

What the hell do you upgrade to from an oc'd 2500k? lol

Of course they will, Nvidia has only released 1 WHQL driver afaik since the release of Kepler and we've just reached 2 Beta drivers. Sure they are working their butts off to improve Kepler overall, Nvidia has a great track record in my memory of doing some great improvements.

The driver for the 690 is only a beta driver, not even WHQL for it. Like 480/580 the scaling improved as did overall performance with more drivers. So I fully expect some really good improvements over the next few months.

Well i'm not really in a hurry to get a new card so i'll give the Asus about 2 more weeks. Lets hope its coming out next week. MSI sure is slacking, wonder why they haven't made a Twin Frozr yet.

I thought I wasn't in a hurry, either, then the Gigabyte showed up on Amazon (I'm a prime member) and I caved like a house of cards on a table made of Jello-O.

If the Asus shows up in the next few days, I'll probably order it instead and return the unopened Gigabyte.

I'd love to have some CUDA support.

Lack of CUDA support on Mac is why I'm moving to PC soon. After having using a CUDA machine at work for editing, I can say that it is such a huge boost over just CPU rendering.

The 670 is looking very tasty for Premiere Pro work :)

Sandy or IvyBridge-E?

I guess you can only go to six or eight cores for it to be a true upgrade....i was contemplating getting a 3770K to upgrade my 2500K but it felt more like a sidestep than anything....so yeah im not upgrading till Haswell

Im sure a 2500K wont bottleneck a GTX670.

Hopefully the same for NA.

Someone at Nvidia is looking out for the Mac users. These drivers are allowing supposedly allowing support of the 5xx series in the Mac Pro.

Check out the Mac Pro forums at the Macrumors site for more details. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a GTX 570 if support for the 670 doesn't come soon.

took out my GTX480 last night

farewell buddy :'( I'll always love you!

if this thing is still leak free when I get back from university in five hours it is Gigabyte GTX 670 OC SLI time :D

I returned my reference KFA2 670, wasn't happy with the stock cooler, wasn't to fussy about the temps but it was too noisy for my liking, just ordered myself a Asus GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II, fingers crossed it will be here tomorrow, I'm hoping that will be a lot quieter.

25dBA @ 1m under full load. Yeah, I think It'll be quiet.

I'm hoping my overclocked 2600K will last me until Intel's mainstream (i.e. reasonably priced) hex/octo-core offerings, and that's not looking to happen until (at least) Skylake in 2015/16.

You'll be fine for a while. I have no intentions of upgrading my OC'ed i7 920 for quite some time and it will be 3yrs old in a few months. Definitely the best and longest lasting cpu/mobo combo I have ever purchased over the years.

Yep. I'm banking on upgrading to Skylake/mont from Ivy. I'm splurging on the 670 now, but who knows what the iGPU/dGPU situation will be by that time.

I've also seen some talks about dx12 coming with Haswell. Is that going to be an incremental step like dx10 or more like dx11? Being stuck on a dx9 card for so long was pretty bad for me.

Nice, the retailer I ordered from has a bunch of 670 DCII TOP's on the way, maybe I'll even get the card this week, not really bothered if I have to wait till next week though.

We need to have a "guys who have _T at the end of their user name" club

My Kepler powered PC arrives tomorrow...talk about amazing timing

Has anyone heard of Zotac before? I never have but they have cards in stock at newegg. I'm just wondering if it'd be worth it in getting one, or if they are one of the bad manu

Never used their brand but I've seen plenty of reviews that have featured zotac cards and they seem as good as any other brand.

A lot of people go for EVGA, Gigabyte or ASUS mostly due to their reputation manufacturing other computer components. I don't think you'll find much difference from one manufacturer to another when it comes to reference cards, even from zotac, msi or galaxy.

I bought one of their 570s for my brother's build at the end of last year - no issues at all.

Good card as far as I know. My buddy has two of their 580's SLI, not a single issue.

Yeah, EVGA rocks, they even sent me a replacement HSF free of charge when I told them that my card was a bit loud for my liking.

Great company, i'll always go with them first just for their warranty support.

Any UK retailers have the TOP version listed? I've been looking all over and haven't found a single one. European sites that ship to the UK are welcome too.

Yep. Its supported with 10.7.3 and 10.7.4. I'm actually putting in a 570 tonight in my 1,1 Mac Pro. I took a heaven benchmark with my 5770 and i cant wait to try it with the 570. Just be sure you pick up an extra 6pin to 6 pin connection or just use the molex connection from the second optical drive slot.

Regarding the ASUS 670 (TOP):
Several german retailers are listing the 16th as an arrival date.
I don't know if that can be trusted, but just wanted to let you know. Perhaps it is the same day outside of europe as well?!

Crazy better than reference card sound levels. One thing I hate about my xfire 5850 rig is the fan noise @ > 40%. I usually just crank up my sound in games (or headphones) anyway though.

I hear you. My 5870 sounded like a vacuum cleaner at anyting above 30% fan. On the flipside my Gigabyte GTX 670 with the windforce fans is quieter than my case fans.
