The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Ryan just complained about MP3 NOT having red jelly on the screen. What the fuck, Ryan?

He was complaining about no on screen indicators for damage, like maybe some vignetting, or little flashes of red, and having to refer to a small icon at the corner. Which is good or bad depending on your taste. Not necessarily red jello.

I think the point was that its absence was more noticeable and felt odd next to the other 'modernisation's' present in the gameplay.

Sad to see the gritty film noir feel of the first 2 games has been ditched in favor of a flashy & edgy presentation.

The gunplay looks awesome....but doesnt really seem like a Max Payne game, just a GTA-esque shooter with bullet time

Going from the quicklook, I thought it looked really cool but if someone told me that it was a linear GTA spinoff, I would have believed them. I dunno, maybe I'm misremember the previous max payne games but his monologues sounded less cheesy than they do in this.

Watching the quicklook, though, I couldn't really tell when Max was being shot. There's an directional indicator, but I couldn't see it most of the time, I just saw his life meter fill up with red in jumps. So not sure if he's arguing for red jelly specifically, but just some other sort of damage indicator.

Haven't finished yet but it seems that they are constantly baffled.

edit: oh wow, this game is a constant assault aesthetics wise. The incredibly weird visuals and music seems to come from two completely different games.

I thought it was super easy to tell when he was getting shot and from what direction.

I didn't watch it in HD, so that may be it, but constantly I'd think 'wow, even on medium this game seems easy, Ryan's just standing there and not taking d--oh, wait, he took lots of damage'.

Yep. There's a lot of stuff that makes me wonder if Ryan played MP1 and 2 recently.

1 and 2 didn't have that. He also talks about how you just have to slow mo and shoot dudes later on because diving's not as useful... That's Max Payne 101. You never dive outside of when you're first going into a small room and you're coming out of a hallway because you'll get torn up. And he was talking about cover and slow moing but you did that in MP1 & 2. It wasn't a button named cover, but you'd stand behind the pillars when stuff got rough, hit bullet time then walk out and shoot whoever you could.

And shotguns in Max Payne have always had super long range.

1 and 2 didn't have that.

I think he's aware of that. His complaint there isn't that it's something missing from previous games, but that he thinks it feels a bit archaic. Archaic carries a negative connotation that I don't necessarily agree with.

Well, that's not a really a cover system. What you're describing is just cover. Cover systems give you added protection when you pop out to shoot, they give you a straight view of your target before you pop out so you don't have to acquire targets again etc. They usually make protagonists more powerful.

I glad there aren't any damage location indicators and only the health bar. I think I'm tired of good looking games turing distorted, red or colorless when you get hurt. If you ever play on a high difficulty you may spent most of your time like that. I think I'll be able to tell where I'm being shoot from and if not I'll figure it out. I think that kind of indication should be handled more by the stereo sound than pointers. The game looks great.

edit: In 1 and 2 I did much less dodge and I used bullet time while running or walking.

Bullet hell games never cease to make me nervous, and with Brad behind the wheel I was expecting to be sweating bullets. Brad, you've really impressed me! I know I'd never be even half as good as you were.

Quick Look: A Valley Without Wind (Brad/Vinny)

This game looks insane.
That was mad. 15 bucks is a little too steep for me, but color me interested after witnessing such amount of crazy...

By the way, I'm cancelling my subscription after only one month. I feel like I never have the time to watch the surprisingly long subscriber videos and most of TNT is unfortunately 360 games. So considering this, which must-watch subscriber videos should I get on with before my subscribtion ends?

All of the Random PC Game videos, for one. There are a few choice Happy Hours too, like Creeper Cam and Babysitting Mama if you haven't seen them.

If you haven't yet seen the Fortune Street TNT, do that. It's probably the funniest thing I've seen on GB.

I've never been a big sonic person, but the game looks okay. At least, it looks way better than a lot of the sonic games this generation. $15 is probably too much, though.

Mothereffing Battleship being more interesting than most of the other AAA high-selling FPS games combined makes me want to never play another videogame ever again.

I saw the 3DS version of Battleship on a store shelve and upon inspecting the back of the box I saw that that game apparently is a turn-based strategy game. Maybe a little bit like Advance Wars. I was not crazy enough to buy it, but that could be kinda alright, too.

Sonic 4 is offensive, Battleship is just worthlessly bland/mediocre. Played a million games like it, don't remember a single one.

They should get Patrick to review Battleship. He seems interested in some of the gameplay mechanics.

edit: oh nm, Patrick is gonna be hunting wild beasts.

So what happened to the resolution option for the new GB/Gamespot player? Videos look terrible when I play them fullscreen.

edit: I guess it's just the "HD" option now.

That Battleship QL was the first time I've ever been annoyed at a QL since the site launched.

IP aside, spending all your time trying to break the game is just annoying to watch. You could do that with BLOPS2, and I bet the "story" will be just as stupid and scripted. I mean, why bother doing the QL at all if doing it is a waste of your time?

Oh wow, and by the end,
they start to like it
. Go figure. :p

Haha, exactly! I'm fine with them wanting to shit on it as long as they accept it's only gonna happen if it's worth shitting on.
