Is there any reason not to dual wield crossbows with the Demon Hunter? I'm level 10 and have a 17 dps and a 16 dps crossbows equipped and with rapid fire I seem to be shredding everything. I do have a couple of 20+ dps 2 handed bows but it doesn't seem like they would be as effective. This is my first Diablo, am I doing it right?

Well, the 20DPS one might be better; I'd try equipping it and see what you get for a Damage listing on the stat screen. Rough guestimate says it should be ever so slightly better overall (like, less than 1 DPS better). You also get to use a Quiver (well, I think?) so there's that.

The thing to keep in mind with dual wielding is that it functions by switching your attacks between the two. You get a pretty good attack speed boost (15%) by dual wielding, yes, but you're still alternating between the two so it's not as big of a damage increase as you'd think.

Also, your skills with no cooldown (say, Rapid Fire, Multishot, etc.) do a lot more damage with slower, harder hitting weapons :x

Sometimes you'll be better off with a single crossbow and a quiver, depending on the stat boosts from the quiver. That's how I'm rolling right now and I get higher DPS like that than with any two crossbow combos I've found yet.

Edit: Also there's some godlike shields you can find that may be worth using over a second crossbow.

Google tells me attack speed affects Rapid Fire, so theoretically yes if you want to keep shredding things with that skill dual wielding is the way to go. (As mentioned earlier, dual wielding gives you a 15% boost to attack speed.)

Edit: Oh, forgot about quivers, that's a good point. I don't even have one on my DH at the moment, none dropped, meanwhile I found three running with my Wiz. Glad the stash is shared...

god damn, Hell difficult is rocking

This REALLY helps when it comes to balancing itemization for non-melee characters. Without such a mechanic, melee types tend to scale much better as equipment improves.

I'd like to see some animation tweaks, however. Maybe an option to hide weapons or to show a deault weapon or something?

Yep, this has less to do with diablo and more to do with what they learned from WoW.
People that played hybrid classes were willing to swap lesser armor for higher stats that they wanted. Until they finally just started making armor with different stats that were needed.

Between my Monk and my friend's Wizard last night we found 17 Quivers over the course of two hours.

The fuck game.

Mousing over the weapon in your inventory will tell you flat-out whether it's an improvement (damage-wise) over the weapon(s) you have equipped. If the DPS change on the weapon is green, it will do more damage than your currently equipped weapon. If it's red, it will do less damage.

So is there ANYTHING I could probably do wrong when leveling my barbarian...? I guess no? What's the most importing attribute? Sill strength? And for the magician INT, DEX for the anime figurine and so on?

holy cock! i am getting raped in act 3 I am level 25! all you people who say this game is easy arent playing a wizard, or have much better gear than my lowly blues

Does anyone know if Blizzard will be fixing lost items due to server errors? I lost a couple rare items, and some achievements around 10 last night when the servers went down.

Just to expand on the Dual Wield bit, let's say you have two identical weapons. This is essentially your best case scenario as far as Dual Wielding is concerned. Your total damage increase here is a little over 15% (~17%).

This damage bonus goes down as the gap between your weapons increases. If your Main Hand is ~25% better than your Off-Hand, you'd have been better off with just the Main Hand weapon, barring anything amazing on the Off-Hand (+Attacks per second, absurdly high amount of +Stats), anyway.

Edit: This is not factoring the higher attack rate for Fury, Spirit, Hatred, etc. generation, just raw listed damage output.

Wow that is interesting. So the damage bonus is based on how close they are together? I assumed the dps would be based on an average of alternating attack damages.

This is my first Diablo game. Never really got into the others. Wow, this game is good, fun, and addicting.

Had a good session going last night with a friend until we got booted. Once these launch issues are sorted, this will be my GOTY.

If my friends get farther than me -- say they're at the end of act 2 and I just killed one of the earlier bosses in act 2 -- can I just join them, kill the final boss of act 2, and progress to act 3? Or is it like Diablo 2, where you have to finish certain quests in order to progress?

What are the requirements for getting to nightmare mode? Do you just have to kill the final boss of act 4 and that's it?

Also, can I go back to other quests without losing all of my progress through the other acts? For example, if I wanted to kill a boss from act 1 when I've already beaten act 2, will it erase my act 2 progress?

So...for the barb, Dual-Wield of 2H?

I've been dual wielding so far (leap, stomp, cleave and hammer). I tried a bit of 2H action but wasn't really impressed.

Any trick on build/skill change that would help on a 2H play?

It basically is due to that since they alternate. It's just easier (well, I think it is, anyway) to check based off how the two weapons compare to each other. Since you're switching between the two when attacking, any time spent swinging with your shitty Off-Hand is time not spent with your vastly better Main Hand.

Essentially, Dual Wielding's damage bonus comes from two factors:

1) The inherent +15% Attack Speed.
2) Extra stats!
2a) +Damage from your Armor applies to both so that skews things a bit if you have massive amounts of +Damage on your Armor/Rings/etc.

If you have a terrible Off-Hand, you'd have been better off just swinging your Main Hand instead. For instance, a 20 DPS Main Hand may attack 15% faster when Dual Wielding but that bonus isn't worth it if your Off-Hand is a 10 DPS Weapon.

It's like D2 with improvements in every area. It feels the same, which is great. Everything I hated about D2 they fixed in D3, including removing the Stamina bar, instancing your own loot (probably the best feature by far), and simplifying how skills are used. There's no way I could go back to D2 after this.

Lost a really nice rare staff for my wizard after last night's emergency maintenance. :'(

I better not have lost my rare daibo. req level 9 and 19.3 DPS.

You know what keeps me from playing multiplayer is the fact that I lose my goddamn quest progress if I join another game. This makes trading an absolute chore, as you have to wait for both parties to finish their quest before you can join a game to trade.

Some notes from my game-athon yesterday (took the day off work).

Rebind your keys!!

ASDF for skills instead of 1234 and Space instead of shift for standing still. Man that makes the game like 1000 times more comfortable to play.

Bind the "Move" command to middle mouse button! It's unbound by default. It allows you to move without attacking anything. An absolute must for when you need to immediately wade through a big group of baddies to pick up a health globe. If you were to left click to move to the globe, you'd most likely accidentally attack something and not get the globe in time.

Turn on Elective mode! It should have been on by default. For those that don't know it allows you to put any skill on any of your 4 hotkeys... even two from the same category.

For example having both Ground Stomp and Leap from the defensive category on my barb. That combo is very very powerful. Jump into the middle of a group with Leap, Ground Stomp to Stun everyone then I use Cleave with the exploding enemies perk and everyone dies very very fast.

I've found the best way to attack for my Barb is to just hold down the left click then tap space bar to swing my sword. With the range and slowness of a two handed sword I can time the start of my swing before the mobs are within range and hit them just as they enter, before they can hit me.

pm me if you find anything. I'm curious, myself.

I don't know if this is right ... but IMHO rings/amulets with something like 2-4 dmg apply to BOTH weapons when DW'ing. They have the same effect red gems in weapons have.

Those rings/amulets are OP anyway. 2-4 dmg is worth what ... 60 dex?

Edit: a 5-10 ring with a 22 dex gem gives me 120 dmg ...

Are you guys getting many rare items? I played 3 hours last night and have yet to get anything decent and have not got 1 rare item.

The first one I saw was off the Skeleton King, and it seems thumping a big boss like that doesn't even 100% assure you a rare drop (early on at least, this may change drastically with more magic find.)

and also to turn on monster health bars and numbers. and also to install darkd3

So if I have more than one friend playing the game and we are all in our own games, how do I make a chat channel that we can all talk in like in WoW? /join <channel name> didn't work. Is there a guild function or some other way to do this?

Awesome tips man. Didn't realize you could do all that. I'm off to tweak my controls!

The game is awesome but the outages still suck this game should have an offline mode.

Game is awesome yes, but they (Blizzard) look totally like a deer in headlights through most of this stuff.

It won't affect me much, but I don't understand why Online isn't considered ladder where offline would allow you to have IP hosted games like D2. I guess that would mean a separate third party economy popping up and Blizzard doesn't want to encourage a market that is riddled with spam and scams.
Level 38, no unique, no set - fuck my luck.
I thought blizzard removed Uniques since those always had stats that were set in stone. Now uniques are inlcuded as rares or legendaries because they have a few variable attributes.

I am getting a lot of magic items but have not seen 1 rare item yet.

Some of the item stats are a slightly convoluted, for instance: I have a piece with
4 armor equipped, and another in my inventory that's 5 armor with a +2 armor property. I assumed that would net me 3 armor over my current but when I equip it my stats only show a 1 pt increase (so the +2 is apparently already included in the 5).

Now I'm confused because I have a bow with a +15 % dmg property but I don't know if that applies to just the weapon or my dmg stat as a whole, and if it's already accounted for in the weapon's DPS figure.

I'm getting such terrible latency right now. I'm off to fight the skeleton king but it's impossible with my latency hitting 400-1000.

Yeah, was talking about legendaries. I'm still calling them uniques, pfff! They still have a fixed name tho.

Jar of Spiders.

Greatsword equipped.

Jar of Spiders.

I recently unlocked the Leaping Spiders and Dire Bats runes and am having a grand ol' time with that combo, peppered with some Soul Harvest and Zombie Dogs. Got a nice variety of +int equipment as well on top of Soul Harvest so my dude is basically just wrecking everything at super-speed, though it's still early days. It'll be interesting to see how he holds up.

I also love how the Witch Doctor strolls around rocking a swinging Mojo Doll if you have one equipped in your off-hand. Looks awesome.

Yes, this was the right class to pick. Can't wait till I get Gargantuan.

Yep, and this is particularly useful if you're a Witch Doctor and need to get in the middle of a group to bust out Soul Harvest.

Anyone else still in act 1? I'm just re running the areas and trying to find events. Don't want to hit act 2 yet without my CE, I should get tomorrow.

And omg at the AH. That's addicting. Already spent 10k on 2 items. My first yellow/gold ring. I have to find any ring drops so far, but am only level 10. And who cares about G4! :P I haven't watch that station in years, and with Adam gone I hope the channel disappears soon.
