I don't know if this is right ... but IMHO rings/amulets with something like 2-4 dmg apply to BOTH weapons when DW'ing. They have the same effect red gems in weapons have.

Those rings/amulets are OP anyway. 2-4 dmg is worth what ... 60 dex?

Edit: a 5-10 ring with a 22 dex gem gives me 120 dmg ...

Yeah, a lot of +Damage on equipment greatly skews things. I probably should have thought of that before I made the blanket statement :x But, yes, all your (non-Weapon) +Damage applies to both Weapons. You can get enough +Damage that more than makes up for the listed damage discrepancy between your two weapons.

I'm not sure how well that scales into, say, Inferno though. I mean, +30-40 damage is neat but on weapons with nearly 1000 base damage, it's mostly cute.

Basically, Weapon Damage when DWing is:
(MH_AvgDmg + OH_AvgDmg + 2*DmgFromArmor) / (MH_AS + OH_AS)

With MH_AS and OH_AS being the Attack Speeds with the 15% bonus to them. The single wield formula is basically the same just without the Off-Hand variables in it.

Some notes from my game-athon yesterday (took the day off work).

Rebind your keys!!

ASDF for skills instead of 1234 and Space instead of shift for standing still. Man that makes the game like 1000 times more comfortable to play.

Bind the "Move" command to middle mouse button! It's unbound by default. It allows you to move without attacking anything. An absolute must for when you need to immediately wade through a big group of baddies to pick up a health globe. If you were to left click to move to the globe, you'd most likely accidentally attack something and not get the globe in time.

Turn on Elective mode! It should have been on by default. For those that don't know it allows you to put any skill on any of your 4 hotkeys... even two from the same category.

For example having both Ground Stomp and Leap from the defensive category on my barb. That combo is very very powerful. Jump into the middle of a group with Leap, Ground Stomp to Stun everyone then I use Cleave with the exploding enemies perk and everyone dies very very fast.

I've found the best way to attack for my Barb is to just hold down the left click then tap space bar to swing my sword. With the range and slowness of a two handed sword I can time the start of my swing before the mobs are within range and hit them just as they enter, before they can hit me.

As been quoted a couple times now, definitely some great tips here. Thanks for this.

Will remember to rebind a few things before I start playing next as well.

and also to turn on monster health bars and numbers. and also to install darkd3

Absolutely. I forgot to mention that, but yes I have that on. It's a must for knowing if you should take that last swing at a monster to kill it, or start running for a health globe.

I like how the health bars don't show up if a baddie is at 100% health. Keeps the screen uncluttered.

Is there any reason not to dual wield crossbows with the Demon Hunter? I'm level 10 and have a 17 dps and a 16 dps crossbows equipped and with rapid fire I seem to be shredding everything. I do have a couple of 20+ dps 2 handed bows but it doesn't seem like they would be as effective. This is my first Diablo, am I doing it right?

Well, when dual wielding, you get a bonus of 15% to attack speed, with each weapon alternating. With 16 and 17 dps crossbows, your average after factoring the bonus would be about 19 dps, so it's actually less then the 2 handed bows.

There are other things to keep in mind though. If you've got any +damage modifiers on any items, they're more usefull on fast weapons then slow ones.

Faster weapons regenerate hatred quicker from your generators, but are less efficicent on your spenders. Also, any skills with cooldowns will generally do more damage with slower stronger weapons, all else being equal.

Faster weapons generally involve less overkill, and are usually make it easier to stay mobile in a fight.

A lot of it comes down to play style and skill selection.

Some of the item stats are a slightly convoluted, for instance: I have a piece with
4 armor equipped, and another in my inventory that's 5 armor with a +2 armor property. I assumed that would net me 3 armor over my current but when I equip it my stats only show a 1 pt increase (so the +2 is apparently already included in the 5).

Now I'm confused because I have a bow with a +15 % dmg property but I don't know if that applies to just the weapon or my dmg stat as a whole, and if it's already accounted for in the weapon's DPS figure.

Stats listed on equipment are already factored into their listed values (e.g, 23 Armor with +10 Armor means it was 13 Armor normally and then has +10 on top).

Back in my day we didn't have this "online DRM" to worry about for single player games, though we did have to blow in our cartridges to make them work...

That's good advice, I'm gonna try rebinding my keys tonight. I was having some difficulty with finding the right number key during an intense moment while holding the shift key to stand still (playing a wizard). Rebinding to ASDF and using the space to stand still should fix that nicely.

Agh, I want to punch people that skip the sequences. The game's a day old! Let the shit play out... Now I don't know what the hell happened... ugh...

It's already accounted for. The number just represents the improvement over a normal (white) item of the same kind.

I was involved in the early reveal threads, but I've been pretty much avoiding everything for the past year (including any talk of the beta). I just want to say that the worries about the art style turned out to be wildly unfounded.

This is lag is unplayable.

What the fuck

You play lag?

Yesterday I was playing with 200 ping and it was mostly fine.

Not so much today. Hitches are so bad I can't see enemies until I'm down to half health and 6 dudes are surrounding me. This is absurd.

Well I saw a joke in all of this... >.<

But yeah I was at a constant 500 last night. Which sucks because attacks feel sloppy and enemies hit you from 10 feet away.

This thread is moving too fast. What method must I use if I have 2 other friends and we all want to text chat in the same chat channel while in our own games?

Noob question. Magic Missile does 110% of weapon damage, so does that mean its better to equip this short sword I found rather than the initial wand? I imagine I'll eventually find more magic skewed weapons to equip, I just though this was kinda strange if that's how it works.

To anyone with FPS stuttering on high end machines, please try this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5051865438

The game may not play nice with anything over 2 CPU cores. I haven't had to do something like this since Mass Effect 2 and I'd love to know if it helps someone before I test tonight.

edit: This could also be a useless tip! But the stuttering is pretty annoying and Blizzard has bigger things to worry about at the moment.

Off topic, but is anyone having trouble with the Live Thread extension? I got a new laptop and I installed the app, but the little refresh arrow isn't showing up.

Really? Is that the same for weapons? (as in, a weapon that has 20 damage and a +2 dmg is actually 18 basedamage) what about stuff like fire damage? Or does the "included in the big number" only apply to equipment?

Monk TelePunch is amazingly janky at 500ms. It's hilarious.

Same for Weapons; +2-4 Fire Damage on a 15 - 19 damage weapon means it was originally 13 - 15 damage.

However, +2-3 Damage on your Armor/Rings/Amulet will not be reflected on the weapon tooltip itself. So if you have the above weapon and equip a +2-3 Damage Ring, the weapon would still say 15 - 19, not 17 - 22.

ASDF for skills, W for inventory is so much nicer then default. I never have to stop and reach all the way across the keyboard and press I just to look at what I'm carrying.

The character screen - C default - also takes you to the inventory. I never press I in D3.

And I'm way too used to holding shift to stand still, and especially hitting the number buttons to bust out spells. That's basically muscle memory at this point. Can't change. :P

Elemental Arrow + Ball Lighting = Me Gusta

That is all.

I'm drowning in a sea of loot. I've got like...500 subtle essences from all the crap I've salvaged

I don't understand why I can't stop playing this game. It's the most repetitive damn thing I've played in years. But I just...I have to get more magic items, I have to break every damn barrel, I have to keep exploring these dungeons, I need to just one more quest, just one more level and then I unlock something cool, one more armor piece...I look at the clock and the hours are just...gone. Why?

Fuck this game :(

Anyone else still in act 1? I'm just re running the areas and trying to find events.
I've been doing the same thing. Even though I'll be doing multiple playthroughs I'm trying to be completist about event achievements in my initial run so I don't have to worry about them on higher difficulties/with other characters. It's led to being somewhat over-levelled but I'm not complaining.

I'm right there with you man. I had to clear every bit of black off the map before I left an area. The server crashing was a godsend or I would have stayed up all night.

In general the items seem less interesting in this compared to D2...

Granted I'm only on Act II, most of the items just seem pretty vanilla as far as bonuses

And now you know why they call it "Diablo".

My Demon Hunter, just about to start Act 4

So...for the barb, Dual-Wield of 2H?

I've been dual wielding so far (leap, stomp, cleave and hammer). I tried a bit of 2H action but wasn't really impressed.

Any trick on build/skill change that would help on a 2H play?

I thought dual wielding frenzy was awesome.

But since I got into Act 2, I've completely switched things around.

Cleave 2-hander.

With Rend (healing rune)

Revenge (for the heal)

Charge

and Bloodrage

I don't have to use pots with all that healing.

QFT.

Can I have two primary mouse skills set? I'm using archer girl and I want her movement reducing chain shot on another key with Bola Shot.

When servers go down, it's a blessing in disguise. I think we all understand this!

I would've stayed up all night last night too playing.

I think D3 does it at such a pace and with awesome explosions and sfx, that the repetitive nature becomes less of an issues. Currently I am going through the storyline and side-quests but I seriously cannot get enough of punching things till they explode.

Great advice for my barb. I was binding those 1-4 keys to my extra mouse buttons, but going with ASDF is much better.

I also changed to Leap/Ground stomp. Seems a great combo at level 13. I use cleave and rend also.

Leap in, ground stomp, apply rend and then cleave till death. Piece of cake :P

All the little graphical details and sounds add to the delight for your ears/eyes. Of course seeing a piece of loot drop is usually the highest factor in the addiction, but the graphics/sounds for exploding enemies definitely mask the repetitive nature for me. It's fun to wade through seas of enemies.

Compare that to WoW for example which has completely sterile kills/death animations.

Enable Elective Mode and you can set any skill to any slot.

Just got to the end of the Starter Edition, is this the end of Act I?
I'm inclined to go out and buy the full version^^

It's the end of the first quest of Act 1 :x

Edit: Out of curiosity, does the Starter Edition end with "YOU CLEARED THE DIABLO III STARTER EDITION" message? I really, really hope it does...
